Try going to Norway some time.  A hotdog from a street vendor is the equivalent of about $20CAD.

Our plan has us arriving Friday morning, and probably most people are arriving Friday.  If you don't find an offer for Thursday night, Toronto is full of hostels, you can probably get a bed really cheap.  I'd look soon.  There's something happening on the 28th or 29th (and I don't know what) that hotels all over the downtown (even the Rex!) are booked solid.
