August 25, 2006 will see the release of the Kanon Prelude DVD. If it's anything like the one released for AIR TV it will more than likely include the creditless opening/ending, select scenes from the first episode, and interviews with the voice actors involved in the show.

Anyways this should be our first true sampling of what to expect from Kyo-Ani's version.

Well I've seen the first episode raw and I must say that I am very happy with it. I should warn people though that the episode is largely an introductory episode. For a person who does not know what's coming it can be somewhat discouraging. It can also be somewhat boring if slice of life, which is basically what it's going to be as we get to know the characters for a while, isn't your thing.

Still if you can hold on past the introductory episodes I believe people will be in for a real treat as the story progresses. I could be wrong of course. I'm not going to deny that.  Still here's hoping for the best.

I've been following this. If you were expecting quality from the studio that did Haruhi you're dead on right. IT's well crafted, superbly written and amusingly plotted. I love it so far and can't wait for each new episode.
<Afina> Imagine a tiny pixie boot stamping on a devil's face.
<Afina> Forever.

<Yuthirin> Afina, giant parasitic rainbow space whale.
<IronDragoon> I mean, why not?

Just marathoned the first 10 episodes. I need to stock up on tissues. ;_;

Episode 12 rawked. Seriously, it trumphs the festival episode from Haruhi for sheer character awesomeness. Of course, I'm not the biggest fan of that series, so grain-of-salt and all that.

This show is just too damned charming. Of course, I spotted one minor screw up (mostly because the rest of the package is so spot on) where Yuuichi's arm is really short. But it was only for, like, three seconds. You know you're dealing with quality when such a minor detail jumps out at you.

Can't wait for episode 13!

Mai and Yuuichi's Waltz = Beautiful. ^^

It's scenes like that which continue to place KyoAni as one of the best animation companies out there today in my not so humble opinion. Are they perfect? Absolutely not. Still compared to a lot of other companies, *cough* Toei *cough*, they are much closer to it that's for certain.

Two final notes...
Mai Chop = Too cute. Just too damned cute! ^^
Mai's voice = Proof that Yukari Tamura has much greater range than most people believe.

Her reaction to the Monkey Dance was better.

Episode 14... beautiful, simply beautiful. We learn about Sayuri's past, something not included in Toei's version, and were on our way to finishing Mai's arc. I'll be sad to see Mai's arc finish, most likely in episode 15 and yes we will definitely find out about Mai's past if the previews are any indication which I should also note was something that was ignored in Toei's version, but all good things must come to an end as they say.

One final note! Yukari Tamura's voice acting freaking OWNS! So magnificent. @_@

Hachimitsu Kuma-san.
Liddo-kun: Bjorn is the rain gutter in which all the dirty thoughts of humanity flow into?
Bjorn: I prefer, instead, to think of myself as the crap that blocks the rain gutters, causing the dirty thoughts of humanity to back up, fill the streets, and flood your basements.

Episode 15... a nearly perfect ending to a very well done arc. Kanon continues to be one of the best series airing right now. KyoAni's rendition of Mai's arc completely blows away Toei's version from beginning to end.

Now with Mai's arc wrapped up Shiori's arc can kick into full gear but what's this? I see signs of Nayuki's arc beginning as well. Just as the seeds that would blossom into Mai's arc were planted in Makoto's arc and the seeds of Shiori's arc were planted in Mai's arc there's no doubt that the seeds of Nayuki's arc will be planted in Shiori's.

Finally got around to watching episode 16. Man, but this show is amazingly well done. It has so many 'moments' when everything just clicks. In this episode I'd count 'playing in the snow' as one of those moments. I honestly think that if you were shown that sample without having seen any of the show you'd be left with an accurate impression of Yuuichi's character. It's not on the level of the dance, but we're just getting into Shiori's story.

What really made this episode for me was the lighting. I accidently downloaded the raw for this episode before so I've already watched it once. I wasn't quite as drawn in as I usually am so I was able to notice little things. The lighting is exemplary. Bright, well lit noons. Soft, orange evenings. Nights that are dark, not not really pitch black. It gives the episode a sense of time. That's particularly important, it would seem, in Shiori's story. The scene at the end of the episode, with Yuuichi standing in the streetlight, listening to the person masked in darkness confess made damned good use of the lighting. KyoAni really pays attention to detail, and that in turn pays off for the viewer.

Also, more hints at Ayu's story. They've been stringing me along good. Since I've never played the game nor watched the older version of the show I really can't wait to find out what happens next with her.

This is going to be damned hard to top in 2007.

And then you see the DVD version and all those colors show up as REALLY clear.

Kyoto Animation's spoiled me. I've been in this hotel room the past week watching a wide variety of anime dubbed into Korean each night, and every single one I've seen (redubs of Japanese series; haven't specifically noticed any homegrown Korean animation yet) looks cheaply drawn next to Kanon playing on my monitor.

I mean, look at this detail. Look at it, I say! One of the things I also noticed upon repeated viewings was, whenever they had a far view that showed the hills in the background, they remembered to put in the power line towers. Now, I'd not seen any of their work before Haruhi, so I dunno if they've always been doing this, but whenever they started it, it's quite excellent.

And, of course, it does look rather better than the original.

Kanon has amazing art, you're right. Shame about the story, but the artistry is -amazing-.
