Jeram

My latest fanfic project has happened in the background: The reading of the RAAC (or TROTRAC for short).
As the months and years go by, I have read the RAAC Ranma archives backwards, and written down favorites and almost-favorites as I went. Here is the DEFINITIVE list:

...

Okay, hold on a second.

...hmm... that's odd...

While we're waiting, let's all watch this week's episode of "Jeram's Ranma½ Fanfic Pet Peeves"!

Here's a few cliches I don't care for:
Let's All Go On A Trip:   For some reason, many fics have this theme.
Soun cried with happiness as he exclaimed.  "Let's all go the North Pole!"
   Ranma pumped his fist.  "Training!"
   Akane smiled.  "Fun!"
   Kasumi beamed.  "Cooking!"
   Nabiki grinned.  "Money!"
Ukyo, Shampoo, Cologne, Mousse, Happosai, Ryouga, Kuno, Kodachi, Hinako, Konatsu, Tsubasa: What about us?
Nabiki smirked.  "Kuno will pay for all of us to go."
Kuno nods.  "Verily.  For I love Akane Tendo and the Pig-tailed girl!"

Instant Expertise Beats All:   So Ryouga or Kuno or some annoying new character learns the mysterious power of a specific martial arts style (Drunken Fighting, Judo, Boxing, etc), and they are suddenly instantly able to take on anyone and beat them handily.  Gee, I wonder if the author likes or takes a class in that style?
Ranma frowns as Ryouga walks in, dressed like Daniel-san from Karate Kid.  "What the heck are ya doing, P-chan?" he asks confusedly.
Ryouga chortles and gets into the classic Karate Kid crane stance, with his hands out and one leg up.  "With my new style, The Miyagi School, I can take on all comers!"
"We'll see about that!" Ranma scowls and charges at Ryouga, ready to flay him with a MOTOKO KABABISHI or a TENSHU KANCHU AMARUGIKEN.  Ranma does a reverse kendo flip, matriculating nastily as he goes, bared foot heading straight unerringly for Ryouga's hard head.
Ryouga crane kicks him with a quick motion, knocking Ranma instantly unconscious.
Mr. Miyagi appears and bows to Ryouga.  "You have done well, Ryouga-san."

"It was a normal day":      Hmm, is it just me or does it seem like every fic these days starts with it being a "normal" day in Nerima, complete with mallets, fights, poisoned cooking, money counting, and multiple water hits?

Nabiki the Mob Boss:      So it appears that Nabiki has gone beyond her bets and selling pictures to Kuno, to becoming a full-blown ringleader of a criminal gang in Furinkan with cronies, money-laundering, etc.  We all know Nabiki's smart - but come on.
Soun's Countable Wails:      Apparently Soun has so many wails, they each have their own number.
Bike on Head:         Every day Ranma gets hit on the head with Shampoo's bike.  Right?
"Mallet-sama", Extra-Dimensional Hammer:   Boy, Akane sure does love her hammer.  But although you'd think it was nothing special (as everyone in Ranma ½ uses mallets), apparently Akane loves hers so much it's "stored in another dimension" or is possibly called "sama"...
Kasumi's Two Word Vocabulary:   Surprisingly, Kasumi does occasionally say more that "Oh my" - but you wouldn't know it from reading most fics.
Shampoo's Wall Breaking:   Shampoo seems to smash through walls regularly in fics, although she only did a bit in the beginning (when hunting Ranma) in canon.
Soun Happily Takes On a New Student:   Although Soun seems content to bemoan any new people coming in to study at the dojo, he seems all too willing to do so in ficdom.
Ranma Picks Up Odd Colloqualisms:   Ranma probably wouldn't use words like "Dope", "Cowabunga", or any slang after 1996 or so.  Just saying.
Akane Training Against Ranma "Dummy":   I don't think I've ever seen this dummy in the series - but I'm sure it was there at least once.  You'd think there was a store selling them by reading some fics.
Low Earth Orbit (LEO):   Another fanon cliche; this phrase/acronym is never mentioned in any way in the series (although people are often hit skyward, it's not quite LEO, where they would surely plummet to their death), and I have seen it CONSTANTLY in fics.
Suddenly Slappy (Kasumi and Nabiki suddenly get mad and/or slap Akane):   When Akane is portrayed in extremely negative ways in fics, being inconsiderate, cruel for no reason, or just plain ridiculously violent, it seems like many fics (at least the ones who want to pair up Ranma with someone other than Akane) have Nabiki or Kasumi "snapping" and giving Akane a good old fashioned slapperoo.
Famous Blue Battle Aura: Akane's aura is recognizable even from space apparently.
Suddenly Eloquent:   Eventually, Ranma can only take so much before he snaps...  into coherence.
"Dang it, Ryouga! Why do ya gotta... every damn time." Ranma shakes his head and sighs.  He pulls out a pipe and begins blowing bubbles.  "Ryouga, old bean, apparently your perspicacity knowns no boundaries, whilst your proclivities towards pugilistic resolutions leave much to be desired.  I envision a future where our mutual tendencies require no tumultuous acquiescence nor unconscious realigned rendering of retroactive retributions.  That's alliteration, you know."
Understatement of the Year/Decade/Century/Millenium Award: I've seen this "award" (one iteration or another) several times - it's a lazy and unfunny joke.
Ranma Explodes: Probably the most common cliche of them all.  Ranma has "had enough" and "explodes" in anger at those who have wronged him.

And hey, let's all sit down to a Traditional Japanese breakfast of eggs, bacon, orange juice, pancakes and toast.  Mmm, authentic!

I'd also like to mention the following quick "PLEASE SPELLCHECK THESE" words (meaning they are mispelled too dang often):
It's Pervert, not Prevert.
It's Nerima, not Nermia, Nerma, or Nermai.
It's Canon, not Cannon.
It's MARTIAL arts, not Marital arts (although Metroanime did once use that joke to great effect).
And finally, those of us who know pinyin, Chinese, or Japanese cannot help but wince at the following:
It's Shan Pu (based on the characters shown in the manga), not:
Xian Pu, Xianpu, Xianpuh, Xian Puh, Sham Pu, Shampu, Shampo, Shamp, Xian Phu, Shan Puh, or Shapoo (you'd be surprised how frequent this one is)
It's Mu Si (again, based on characters shown), not:
Moose, Moouse, Mouse, Moo So, Moo Su, Mo Su, Mo So, or Mu So
It's Koh Lon, not:
Ko Lun, Ku Lon, Kuh Lon, or Co Lon (I can forgive Ko Lon)
It's Ni hao or possibly Nihao (depending on your chinese to english standard), not:
Ne ho (which oddly enough, is Cantonese and the least understandable mistake for non-speakers), Ni ho, Nihau, or Neho.
It's Airen or Ai ren, not Ailen (which is understandable) or Arien (which is just sloppy) or Ainen (clearly a typo).

Let's try this again:

1)  Ranma and Tenchi: Together Forever   by T. H. Tiger

5)  A Feather in the Wind      by Atarukun

The BOTTOM TEN stories in pure length (ignored: Side stories and poems):
1)  Reiji's Anime Joke Time Dai IchiBan by Rejiji Musket
The name of the fic is a tenth of the entire size of the post.  Oh, and it's not funny.
2)  Ranma Commits Suicide      by Daniel Gibson
   Okay, this one is cute.
3)  Ryouga's Curse         by eslin123_99
   Awful.

   Eh, just a oneshot.

   Stupid little spamfic.
7)  What If... : The Fight      by Jaelle
   Cute oneshot.
8)  Just a Test            by trunksette
   Silly spamfic.
9)  Regrets after it's too late      by Neil Reynolds
Attempt at depressing oneshot - badly written.

t takes a mighty pen to write fanfiction.

Dracos

Amusing.

Though choices is less interesting in context of the fact it's reallly just a Ranma bashfest.

Dracos
Well, Goodbye.

Quote from: "Jeram"My latest fanfic project has happened in the background: The reading of the RAAC

The whole thing?  0_0  I apprectaite your sacrifice.  And that crossover list is...scary.

Thanks for rating the fics.  I did find it odd that you mentioned everything of Zen's except Bitter End, which is IMO his best work.

Quote from: "Jeram"Here's a few cliches I don't care for:

And thanks for this as well.  I think you missed Akane's Cooking Comes To Life.

Quote from: "Jeram"Let's All Go On A Trip:   For some reason, many fics have this theme.

This is because for some reason, some people decide to write fics after only having seen the second movie.  Far to many fics are based on minimal or even no knowledge of the actual series.

Quote from: "Jeram"Instant Expertise Beats All:

This is dire.  I've seen Ranma become able to effortlessly defeat Ryouga after learning Boxing – not Kick Boxing – Boxing.  Even in the world of Ranma ½ powerups don't guarantee instant wins. Typically, they don't guarantee wins at all.

Quote from: "Jeram""Mallet-sama", Extra-Dimensional Hammer:   Boy, Akane sure does love her hammer.  But although you'd think it was nothing special (as everyone in Ranma ½ uses mallets), apparently Akane loves hers so much it's "stored in another dimension" or is possibly called "sama"...

To be fair, Akane does use the hammer a lot.  But most of the time she uses other weapons – doors, stone lanterns, furniture, etc.

Quote from: "Jeram"Kasumi's Two Word Vocabulary:   Surprisingly, Kasumi does occasionally say more that "Oh my" - but you wouldn't know it from reading most fics.

I'd say that's a subset of Annoying Taglines.  In those same fics, Ryouga's vocabulary seems to be reduced to "Ranma, prepare to die!" and Shampoo can only say "Aiyah!"

Quote from: "Jeram"Akane Training Against Ranma "Dummy":   I don't think I've ever seen this dummy in the series - but I'm sure it was there at least once.  You'd think there was a store selling them by reading some fics.

Akane does beat up (and later hug) a dummy during Shampoo's intro, but that's the only time I recall.

Quote from: "Jeram"Ranma Explodes: Probably the most common cliche of them all.  Ranma has "had enough" and "explodes" in anger at those who have wronged him.

This is the single most common and single worst way of getting Ranma matched up with a girl from another series.  Typically it involves every regular martial arts character and a few of the rarer ones all showing up at the same time, with 'poor, put-upon Ranma' caught in the crossfire.  Just like never happened in the original series.

Again, thanks for the work you put in.  How many Sanity Points did you lose?
If you see Vampire Hikaru Shidou, it is Fox.  No one else does that.  You need no other evidence." - Dracos

"Huh? Which rant?" - Gary

"Do not taunt Happy Fun Servitor of the Outer Gods with your ineffective Thompson Submachine Gun." - grimjack

The whole thing?  0_0  I apprectaite your sacrifice.  And that crossover list is...scary.
Yup, the whole thing - since it's not like I just read it all at once, it took me about a year and a half to go through the whole thing.  The crossover list is only what I could reasonably retrieve - there must be more.

QuoteThanks for rating the fics.  I did find it odd that you mentioned everything of Zen's except Bitter End, which is IMO his best work.
WHOOPS! You are, of course, right - I'll make the edit to "fantastic".
I also didn't mention a few of my favorite authors - I like quite a bit of Metroanime's fics.  I'll work on that addendum.

QuoteAnd thanks for this as well.  I think you missed Akane's Cooking Comes To Life.
Heh - that's true.

QuoteThis is dire.  I've seen Ranma become able to effortlessly defeat Ryouga after learning Boxing – not Kick Boxing – Boxing.  Even in the world of Ranma ½ powerups don't guarantee instant wins. Typically, they don't guarantee wins at all.
Oh, I read that Boxing one too.  It was fairly ridiculous how easily he could win with it.

QuoteAgain, thanks for the work you put in.  How many Sanity Points did you lose?
I'll estimate "Fiverty" or so.

Thanks for writing!
