A problem that attests any long running game on two fronts is that it is a massive exercise to enter.  With COR it used to be reading the entire chunk as an exercise of showing you would be willing to put in the effort, but that doesn't really encourage reading.  It also doesn't provide a quick reason to start reading.  When the only thing facing you is stacks of forum topics or game logs, it really requsites a pre-existing interest.

Obviously, a good answer to this is chapter summaries: Short 1 pagish summaries that really help bait people into reading it, getting into it and whatnot.

That's an obvious and simple comment.  What's more worthwhile is: What should go in one?  What advice and thoughts can we give that would help folks put stuff like that together?

I find that immersing prospective PCs with game talk and summaries/chat with other PCs works best for this. Let them be a dynamic part of the process so they can get their feet wet at whatever pace they like. It's also a bit less imposing than reading gallons of logs or old posts.

It does work well for when it can be done and should be done, but I didn't mean as a precursor to joining the game, but instead as a precursor to reading it.  Reading my original though, I wasn't clear on this.

I was making the assumption that folks reading games are a more active  pool of likely joiners in the future.

Another way of phrasing it is: Given total unknowns, how can the GM provide ways for them to get familiar with the game before asking the GM about it?

Mmmm. Boardwise? Summaries and posted logs strike me as the best 1-2 combination there is. IRC wise? Other channel chatting, like talking about games in #soulriders that run in non #sr channels.
