Please place questions and announcements here if I can't be contacted otherwise.  Especially announcements about being away.

This is in response to Trunkyboy.

1) Your OOC part didn't need to be said there.  The players aren't going to play with you any differently than they would anyone else, and it's a bit rude of you to ask them to.
2) Everyone makes mistakes.  It's part of the game.  The nature of the mistake determines the result.  If I don't feel your post is clear enough, providing there's time, I'll ask you to clarify and possibly change it.  If the situation warrants.  I'll be very put out if someone changes their post without reason and without asking first.  Editing for spelling is acceptable without checking.
3) If you post something that *is* stupid, the situation will dictate the response.  I will be react differently to inexperience, an honest mistake, or just plain not caring enough and wanting someone else to make the world right for you.
4)  If you don't understand something, or I'm not clear enough, that's what this thread is for. Or find me on AIM or IRC.
5)  If you're unsure about something you want to post, feel free to ask me or one of your party members, here or the various other places.
6)  We're all here to have fun.  We're here to help you, and hope that you and everyone else can get as much enjoyment out of this as possible.

To summarize:  If you're nervous or unsure that's fine.  If you want advice, either in the OOC thread or on IRC, that's great.  I advise discussing things among the players before posting.  I know I do it.  But if you want preferential treatment in the game, you aren't going to get any, and shouldn't ask.

Hey KP, editted the post as I misread and thought the girl was speaking.  Changed the direction of the grunt, though it shouldn't matter much.

If you want me to change it back, just tell me.

Two things.

1)  Keep OOC knowledge out of your posts.  I know it's difficult sometimes, for example, Panda's character being a mage isn't know to anyone except for me and him.  His internal thoughts are internal.

2)  Try and post at leat once a day.  If you aren't going to post for more than two days, let me know.  Repeated failure to post will result in death, especially if you're holding others up.

3)  Try and stay in-character.  If your character doesn't have knowledge about magic, you don't have knowledge about the stuff.

To be 'helpful', I give an example of what I, O'karn Genshair, see when I see Panda's character:

"Scrawny human female.  Odd clothes.  Ugly staff.  Pathetic human."

Notice: I do not note that she's a mage.  She hasn't given any indication of that beyond perhaps guessing off of clothing, which even my ogre would think as stupid.  I don't assume she's good.  It's clothing.  That would be presumptuous.  I do take her fashion sense and staff to be ugly, but that's by my ogre standards.  Notice my own tastes.  I also look down on her for being a human.  Simple as that.  This does not include knowledge of what she is, where she came from, etc.

Even though I, the player, can deduce this stuff.  O'karn cannot.  He does not have access to her thought bubbles or to the various quirks of information that would clearly paint her as a mage.

If your comments were in reference to my post, then my response is that my character made certain assumptions - which may or may not be correct.  The idea is that he does this quite a bit - "this" being trying to figure out people by observing them.

I had hoped that my personal bias or perception as a player would not come through, considering that I am trying to write my character as a completely separate entity to myself.

So my question is: is it fair to have a character make such an assumption (such as, he thinks a character is a mage or is good - and since he has had experience with both types of people, it is somewhat of a fair assumption.  On the other hand, he does not "get" all of them - I actually had a line in there about "some of these" being outside his experience.) or should I take down his observing ability a notch?

It was a bit more than I'd expect from anyone.  Unless the garb of the mages from where your character is from dress like Panda, I don't really see how you could have pegged her as a mage without her internal monologue.

That being said, assuming Panda's character might be a mage isn't bad.  But you refered to her as one, which doesn't seem possible unless she told you or you have a super sense.

It would be best to state your assumptions whenever possible.

It doesn't mean much now, with just the descriptions, but it could later.  If this happened later, say a character is privy to something that you aren't and it involved an ambush or a trap, if you use that, It would be an unfair advantage in the game, and I'd have to take in-game action from it.

Which is why we're having the discussion now.  ^^

Okay, I see your point, and it is a good one.

In the future, I will make sure my assumptions are both IC and clear.

Jeram, my suggestion would be to take it down to an assumption you could make off what you could see.  The mage assumption wasn't too bad.  The "She claims to be good" assumption DEFINITELY was.  If you can't justify, from what information you do have, making the assumption, then don't make it.  It's unrealistic to leap from "She's wearing white clothes" to "She claims to be good".

These sort of assumptions alienate both your fellow players and GM.  The players look and say: Here's someone using OOC knowledge.

The GM on the other hand sees the same, and then punishes it.

Neither are good.

I appreciate what you're saying.  This is my first real GM-based board RPG, so I know there are some mistakes I might make.

Question: Can I assume that all bags contain the same thing? In my most recent post, I did not assume anything other than that the bag did indeed have contents.
