19:05 <•Kotono> "Business and pleasure," Is the man's answer after a moment.
19:07 <Devar> "Forgive our interruption in that case." Devar says.
19:10 <•Kotono> "My business is mostly concluded," Firehair declares, "It's good to see elemental purity here," he comments to the group, then takes his leave. Once he's gone? Anne sniffs before, "I dislike his turn of phrase."
19:11 <•Kotono> A tongue click that's more a wet gurgle by Sanda, before, "He was cute, in a wild man sort of way."
19:11 <Devar> "Rina probably would've hit it off." Devar comments.
19:11 <Skaya> "Or hit him."
19:12 <•Kotono> "Just so," Anne agrees, "To either of you, and seeing which would've been fascinating."
19:15 <•Kotono> At that Spine turns, "Were you successful?" she asks.
19:16 <Skaya> "Quite so," Skaya says, nodding at Devar.
19:17 <Devar> Devar offers the staff out. "We happened upon a merman impaled on a stake in the middle of the seafloor on our way, but didn't find any traces of a culprit for that."
19:18 <Skaya> "We also heard that there's someone with a black trident that dooms you to die if you're hit with it?"
19:19 <•Kotono> A weary sigh, "More trouble," She says, but the staff is taken and put aside. "I've heard of that too, but no first hand sources. Only rumors. Tell me if you find more or see it yourselves."
19:20 <Devar> "We did see a group of mermaids mining some rather lucrative-looking minerals, but there were enough of them that I assume they're safe from trouble." Devar adds. "Maybe we should check out where the rift originally appeared and see how things are there?"
19:21 <Skaya> "It's either that or you can ask us to go after all sorts of crazy murderers, so long as you know their general area."
19:25 <•Kotono> "The rift has had several groups send to it, but if yo uthink you can find out more, then go," Spine encourages, "I need time to coordinate a new mission for you as well."
19:26 <•Kotono> "I wouldn't mind seeing it," Anne confesses, "For what it's worth."
19:27 <Devar> "It'll probably give us a good idea of the overarching situation anyway." Devar says. "Oh - hey, Sanda, in case we get into a fight again, I think those bracers might be more useful for Skaya, if you don't mind?"
19:29 <Skaya> "If you're fine with loaning them out," Skaya voices to that.
19:34 <•Kotono> SAnda considers and passes them over, "Alright," She decides, "You could use the protection too."
19:34 <•Kotono> Anne side eyes Sanda, "You're the one who needs much of my healing, Sanda."
19:34 <•Kotono> With a watery hiss Sanda retorts, "Statistically speaking, you're full of it."
19:35 <Devar> "Will you two get a room already?" Devar asks with some mirth. "Let's go, I'll take you to where the rift formed."
19:35 — Skaya snickers. "Thanks, Sanda," she tells her friend. "Just... attack more from a distance for now?"
19:38 <•Kotono> Anne freezes and Sanda glowers, and says a few extremely unkind words about Devar under her breath. She hmphs and swims ahead, not another word said.
19:38 <•Kotono> With a long sigh, "Ignore the healer's insights to who needs endurance and protection," she murmurs, "Jetina lend me strength."
19:38 <•Kotono> *Anne murmurs
19:42 <•Kotono> OOC: Okay, was one moment. Going to head to the rift then? What's your plan for getting there, just swimming as normal or?
19:42 — Skaya considers a dozen different responses before deciding to ignore everything and swim ahead.
19:42 <Skaya> OOC: Can we get there via swimming for a couple hours?
19:51 <•Kotono> OOC: It's further than that, more like a half day's travel if I have my notes right.
19:51 <Skaya> OOC: If we can rent seahorses that dramatically speed this up, let's do that. If not, let's swim!
19:57 <•Kotono> "You need to get there faster?" Nibelle asks as the party discusses it, "I may have an option to help."
19:57 <Skaya> "Oh?"
19:57 <Devar> "That would be very helpful." Devar agrees.
19:59 <•Kotono> "Gwareline's priestesess have a selection of tame sharks to ride, but you have to have a mermaid with good standing in the church to rent one," she offers, "But they're very fast."
19:59 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+12

20:01 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+12 --> [ 1d20=2 ]{14}
20:01 <•Kotono> "Tame sharks?" Anne echos, "I presume you would be the mermaid?"
20:02 <Skaya> "It would be pretty nice to ride a shark."
20:02 <•Kotono> "I'm in," Sanda says eagerly, "A tame shark's too good an opportunity to pass up. What are the odds you'll ever get another chance?"
20:03 <Devar> "I'm no druid but I know a thing or two about handling animals." Devar echoes. "So it should be fine."
20:08 <•Kotono> The party swims to an open hall, more of a seastone slab supported by classical marble pillars. Within are about a dozen large, long sharks. Closer to dire sharks than sharks in size, each with a mermaid clad in golden jewelry besides them. They sing long and low, the sharks still and sedate. Each wears a golden seashell on their throat, jewelry seemingly pressed and merged into their flesh.
20:08 <•Kotono> The sharks don't even react to fresh meat swimming in, and instead listen to the song. "Nibelle!" A mermaid swims up - long black hair and clad in necklaces, rings and bracelets, as well as golden bands around her fishy lower half, often studded with pearls. She then gasps, "You're with land creatures!" She swims back a little, then peers, "...mostly females," Her voice is hesitant.
20:09 <•Kotono> "Ah! No no! It's not like the stories of pirates!" Nibelle waves her hands back and forth quickly, "They're friends!"
20:09 <•Kotono> Anne's expression turns disgusted, "Do pirates actually do that?"
20:10 <Devar> "It only takes one for people to start talking about it." Devar says.
20:10 <•Kotono> "The stories-" The other mermaid says, slowly approaching back.
20:11 <•Kotono> "Fear not. I have less and no use for pirates of any shade," Anne confirms, "And Devar speaks truly, only a seed is needed to sprout an entire tree of fears."
20:11 <•Kotono> Sanda headtilts a little, expression like she has question marks dancing over her head, until her expression turns queasy.
20:11 <Skaya> "Wouldn't such stories usually feature a prince?" Skaya asks Sanda quietly while the mermaids work through this.
20:12 <•Kotono> "I would hope so," Sanda murmurs back to Skaya, "But I've heard bawdy songs about mermaids when we were in port. I really hope it's nothing."
20:13 <•Kotono> ""They're friends," Nibelle repeats, "And hear to borrow steeds," she goes on, "I vouch for them."
20:14 <•Kotono> *here
20:15 <•Kotono> "Oh, steeds?" A thought, "Five riders with legs. That would be two sharks," The mermaid considers, "Unless you want to pay for more and ride one each? But they're big enough to seat three."
20:16 <Devar> "I think two is fine?" Devar says, looking at the others. "We've traveled bunched up on steeds before."
20:16 <Skaya> "We're not heavy, so two should be fine," Skaya agrees with a nod.
20:18 <•Kotono> "You can charge Spine,"
20:18 <•Kotono> "You can charge Spine," Nibelle continues, "They did work for her, and she owes them pearls."
20:19 <•Kotono> Meanwhile you're lead to two sharks. Each quite long and savage looking, yet come to you like a dog. Its tip gently butts against Devar and then Skaya's hands, and the other follows suit for Anne and then Sanda.
20:20 <Skaya> "I suppose it's fate," Skaya says with a helpless shrug, before patting the shark with a smile.
20:20 <Devar> Devar gently runs his hand over the shark's 'nose' area. "Anything we need to know regarding them for first-timers?" Devar asks.
20:20 <•Kotono> Sanda gently pats the shark, as Skaya's rubs against Skaya's hand. "They're really tame. Impressive."
20:21 <•Kotono> "Ride them carefully and get comfortable, but they're fully trained to answer in multiple languages." Nibelle says as they're brought out, saddled with three each and reigns. "Or just use the reigns. They'll defend themselves if needed, but they have your scents now, and won't attack you unless you harm them first."
20:23 <Devar> Devar nods and will get on one of them in the rider's saddle slot. "Sounds easy enough." He says.
20:23 — Skaya decides to try guiding the shark on the way back. For now, she alights behind Devar.
20:23 <Skaya> *climbs on
20:30 <•Kotono> Sanda gets on behind Skaya, while Anne takes the lead of her own shark. Nibelle hops on as well, more curling up in her saddle than anything else. Odd, but it seems to work. Like that, you take o-woah! The sharks are fast. Really fast. Faster than a charging warhorse, going through the water swiftly. Sanda grabs onto Skaya and lets out a pleased laugh, while Anne calls, "So swift! They must be
20:30 <•Kotono> bred for this."
20:31 <Devar> "I wonder if Phantom Steed would work underwater." Devar muses as he gets used to the pace of the shark.
20:31 <Skaya> "It surely would because you can fly underwater," Skaya responds, making sure to hold on to the shark and to Sanda.
20:32 <Devar> "Something to think about if anything happens." He says as he starts to head back towards the rift!
20:32 <•Kotono> roll 1d100
20:32 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d100 --> [ 1d100=82 ]{82}
20:32 <•Kotono> roll 1d100
20:32 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d100 --> [ 1d100=64 ]{64}
20:33 <•Kotono> Like this the terrain passes fast. Hours compress down far less, barely two. By the time you get close? Nibelle's lightly singing a cheery set of songs as you go along, while Anne focuses on directing her shark. Sanda's curled up against Skaya's back, eyes closed and with a small smile on her face. "Almost there," Nibelle calls.
20:34 <Skaya> That speed is pretty amazing indeed! Perhaps there exist magical sharks that can swim through the air just as fast. Skaya makes a mental note to look into that.
20:36 <Devar> Devar's glad no one gets seasick!
20:36 <•Kotono> Sanda yawns and stirs, "That was a lovely nap," she murmurs to herself, "Oh, we are? Good."
20:38 <•Kotono> "Just ahead," she says, as yo uswim along. In the distance you see the rift - and several buildings of rough hewn green and yellow seastone have been hastily built. Little more than simple rectangles and squares, but functional. No creatures are around however, in spite of those buildings.
20:38 <Devar> "How do you want to approach this?" Devar asks. "Stay on the sharks or get in closer?"
20:38 <Devar> "How do you want to approach this?" Devar asks. "Stay on the sharks or get in closer and leave them here?"
20:38 <Devar> OOC: It helps when I type a full thought
20:40 <•Kotono> "Take them with us as far as they can go. If for no other reason than I have no doubt their death would be expensive," Sanda sniffs, "And levied directly on us."
20:41 <•Kotono> "Sanda's likely correct, at least as far as reaching the rift." Anne concurs.
20:41 <Devar> Devar will head towards the rift on the shark then!
20:45 <•Kotono> The party goes towards the rift. Just before it? "Hello there!" A cry in Common, from below. Back behind you, from the buildings built around the rift.
20:45 <Devar> Well, they weren't attacked, at least! Devar swings the shark around to stop it so they're pointed towards the buildings.
20:46 <Skaya> "Hello!" Skaya calls back, as is only polite.
20:49 <•Kotono> It's an older creature. An...elf? An elf with aqua blue skin, wrinkled and ancient looking. A full head of white hair is long enough to reach his feet, and he wears a simple pair of pants that end at his knees. He stands on the seafloor, leaning on what looks to be a staff of carved, shining pearl. Notably his face has reptilian features and a golden cast to it, as well as some scales. His
20:49 <•Kotono> upper body is criss-crossed with thousands of tiny letters, runes of some kind, an intricate pattern of them.  He waves back before, "Land creatures on mermaid sharks! Goodness, goodness, what a lovely change of pace," he declares.
20:50 <•Kotono> Nibelle stares a moment and then gasps, "That face, that skin color, those scales," she murmurs, a hand to her mouth. "Are you one of the Bounty?"
20:50 <Devar> Devar will guide the shark down to get closer - intentionally trying to do so slowly so it doesn't appear openly threatening or anything. "Greetings to you, sir." He looks over at Nibelle and then back at the elf, hoping one of them will provide an explanation!
20:51 <•Kotono> "That I am," The old elf declares with a grand, knowing little smile. "Not that it's a secret with this face."
20:52 <•Kotono> "The Bounty - an entire village of sea elves were gifted with the children of a gold dragon. At once." A cough, "It's a famous underwater ballad."
20:53 <•Kotono> At Nibelle's explanation, "Ah. Dragons." Anne murmurs quietly, as if that explains it. Then in a louder voice, "A good greeting you, I am Anne of Moore."
20:53 <Devar> Devar opens his mouth immediately with a question, then sits for a moment before he closes it. "Devar of Eldath."
20:53 <Skaya> "Skaya of Shaundakul," she introduces herself. "A pleasure."
20:53 <•Kotono> Sanda matches Devar's open mouth, but likewise comes up with nothing. After a moment, "Sanda," she introduces herself, "Of Water, I suppose."
20:55 <•Kotono> "Call me Golden Graces, or just Graces." The man greets, "You have questions, I have no problems answering. The ballads have gone around for centuries beneath the waves. In return I ask that you answer mine after."
20:57 <Devar> "Then allow me a rather blunt question, Golden Graces, what are you doing here, or rather, what is your intent by being here?" Devar asks.
20:58 <•Kotono> "Study. I was in the area when I heard the stories. I came too late, but the magic of this place still fascinates me," he answers, "Normally, I disguise myself to avoid attention, but here infamy has its own utility."
20:58 <•Kotono> "Nibelle,"
20:59 <•Kotono> "Nibelle," Nibelle adds belatedly, "I'm not strictly of Gwareline, but she is the mother of us mermaids. I never thought I'd meet one of the Bounty like this!"
21:00 <Devar> Devar nods to that. "Do you know what the current situation of the rift is? I expected there to be more people here fighting over it."
21:02 <•Kotono> "That's passed. The treasures and access to it have passed, and the fights finished," Golden Graces answers as he gestures towards the rift with a sweep of his arm. "And those too foolish to take the hint were given a lesson in the power of the ages." A long, deep laugh from the elf after, "Ah, they ran fast."
21:02 <•Kotono> "So you claimed it as your own," Anne surmises, "In effect."
21:03 <•Kotono> "I care little if you go and study it, as long as you do it peacefully," Golden Graces goes on, "I object to my own studies being interrupted by battle. It makes me," A moment, "Grumpy."
21:04 <Devar> "Interesting, so it had some sort of finite resource then." Devar says. He nods. "That was all I wanted to ask."
21:08 <•Kotono> "Then my question is simple: Did you come here to learn or to plunder?" The old elf asks back.
21:10 <Devar> "Both, I think," Devar says. "We aren't just going to attack people indiscriminately to steal anything from them, but we will stop anyone attacking innocent people because of their greed. I was certainly hoping we'd come across something lucrative, but if that moment's passed already then there's more adventures to be had in the future, and it sounds like there are plenty of people down here
21:10 <Devar> terrorizing others which we'd put a stop to anyway."
21:11 <Skaya> "So, regarding what my friend just said," Skaya voices. "Plunder is a word with a negative connotation and implies taking something from another, yes? We're not here to take something from you or fight you over riches."
21:13 <•Kotono> Your words are considered by the elf, before, "Fine, go on,"  he waves you off, "So long as I don't get grumpy."
21:15 <Devar> Devar nods and will swing the shark around to go towards the rift!
21:21 <•Kotono> Thus you descend back into the rift. It's like it was when you left, but quiet otherwise. Going anywhere in particular in it?
21:21 <Devar> OOC: Just go straight down, and Devar is going to manifest detect magic as they go to take a look around.
21:25 <•Kotono> OOC: Give me spellcraft, and sec.
21:26 <Devar> OOC: Take 10 for 30
21:36 <•Kotono> Down you go. There's a strong aura permeating the area. Studying it as you go, Devar can tell it's general abjuration, transmutation and conjuration. Strong magic, too. It's blocking teleportation from outside this area, you think. It's also protecting the area from being transmuted, such as turning the stone to mud.
21:37 <Devar> OOC: Is the darkness still there from the last time?
21:38 <Skaya> "So this is just the largest phenomenon?" Skaya wonders out loud as they descend. "And gems miraculously bursting out the ground for cute mermaids to farm are like the aftershocks of an seaquake?"
21:39 <•Kotono> OOC: Yes.
21:39 <Devar> "When we were here, you could go inside these little pockets." Devar says, gesturing at the darkness inside each layer. "They'd teleport you to some sort of trial dungeon, basically. I'm not convinced that it just stopped working, there's still very powerful magic all around here."
21:40 <•Kotono> "I believe so," Anne mentions, "At least, something powerful's here or was here."
21:40 <Skaya> "Guess that we may not be able to go there and have fun properly, even though we came over quickly," Skaya muses. "Ah well."
21:42 <Devar> "It doesn't work if we touch it, but why not try?" Devar asks. He does keep concentrating to see if the magic feels any different anywhere within the rift itself.
21:42 <Skaya> "What, I need to literally touch the wall? That's how you get teleported away?"
21:44 <Devar> "Yes, you need to interact with that darkness you can't see through." He says.
21:44 <Devar> "As soon as you touched it you got sent off somewhere." He adds.
21:44 <•Kotono> "That seems like a remarkably poor idea," Anne adds, side eyeing Sanda at that. "Who touched it first?"
21:45 <Devar> "Probably me." Devar admits.
21:45 <•Kotono> "It got us treasure, such beautiful treasure," Nibelle says happily.
21:45 — Skaya reaches out towards the darkness....
21:45 <•Kotono> Anne sighs softly and rubs the bridge of her nose, but doesn't further comment.
21:46 <•Kotono> Skaya touches the darkness and...OOC: Refresh me, what elemental tempalte did you take?
21:46 <Skaya> OOC: Half-Air
21:50 <•Kotono> Nothing happens when you touch the darkness.
21:50 <Skaya> "Perhaps it's the wrong darkness? It may not be dark enough?"
21:51 <Devar> "It ironically may not work for people who are part Air, now that I think about it... the place was predominantly Earth-based." Devar says. "But let me see if I can find anywhere that feels stronger or different." He continues to take the shark around, studying the magic!
21:52 <Skaya> "Huh. But aren't you part lightning? That's closest to air, really...." Skaya mutters, shrugging as she trusts in Devar's magical senses.
21:53 <Devar> "...You're not wrong." Devar says. "But maybe it's because I'm part... whatever this place was part of? The creature mentioned Mineral, which I think is Earth and... Positive?" He says as he goes around.
21:58 <•Kotono> Devar searches around...n.ext time! OOC: It's about time for us, so we'll pick up after Thanksgiving. Have a happy turkey day, everyone!

19:01 <•Kotono> "Lots of them," One calls up, "Rumors all over!"
19:02 <•Kotono> "I hear a new one every hour when I listen," The one chatting with you agrees, "If you're worried, go back to town, but watch out for someone with a black trident. I heard that once you're hit by it, you're doomed to die."
19:03 <Skaya> "Oh? Curse or disease?" Skaya asks curiously.
19:04 <•Kotono> "I don't know, but it sounds scary," IS the answer back,a s Anne hms. A gurgle more honestly.
19:05 <Skaya> "Okay then. Have fun digging up gems!" Skaya calls over, and turns to head back to town.
19:05 <•Kotono> "I can think of a few things, but none are desired," Anne mentions, "I hope that one is only feverish panic and not reality."

19:06 <Devar> "I have a feeling we're going to be busier than usual for a while down here." Devar says as they go back.
19:13 <•Kotono> The rest of your return is without incident. Many eyes are on yo uas you swim back in, but no one directly challenges you. Still, you can hear murmurs. Of land creatures strong enough underwater, of someone of the Lady Of Still Waters coming in a time of need. As you get close to Spine's Spire, Nibelle swims up to you all from behind. She's visibly battered and beaten, some sort of seaweed
19:13 <•Kotono> press serving as a bandage over her torso.  "I helped, too," she says, sounding weak. "D-did you find that staff?"
19:14 <•Kotono> Anne turns and tsks, and then grasps her holy symbol, "Yes, and be still a moment," She says, a pulse of healing energy falling ove rall of you.

19:16 <Skaya> "What happened to you?" Skaya asks, eyes widening.
19:16 <Devar> "My word, Nibelle, are you okay?" Devar asks. "Who did this?"
19:16 <•Kotono> Wounds heal and vitality returns. Nibelle lets out a soft cry of relief and then, "Thank you."  She pokes her bandage a few times, but leaves it in place. "So many pearls and coral to be earned." Then to that question, "I helped rescue several travelers from a bloodlusted shark."
19:17 <Skaya> "Ah, then it's good you still have all your limbs," Skaya says with a nod. "Good job!"
19:18 <•Kotono> "Spine captured it for study," Nibelle continues, "But she should be back by now."
19:19 <•Kotono> Sanda nods as if that's perfectly normal, "Of course," she says, "A shark is nothing compared to serious mastery of magic."
19:19 <•Kotono> "Unless the shark knows magic too," Anne's lips almost twitch up enough to be a smile. Almost.
19:19 <Skaya> "You know, speaking of lost limbs," Skaya muses. "How hard is it to fix here?"
19:19 <Devar> "Another crazed creature?" Devar asks with a frown. "That's a bit too much like what that staff does."
19:20 <•Kotono> Sanda rolls her eyes at Anne before, "It does seem to be a pattern."
19:20 <•Kotono> "You got a scroll for that last time, right, Devar?" Nibelle asks, "That was your entire reason to come here in the first place."
19:20 <Skaya> "He did indeed! But I'm not sure if it's a one-off or if they're all over the place here."
19:22 <•Kotono> "Ask Spine. Though didn't you ask that before, Devar?" Nibelle asks.
19:23 <Devar> "I didn't ask her too much about the logistics of getting more, I think she just had one for sale." Devar says. "Oh, there's also the fish that runs the wand shop, they might know more too if it isn't something that Lady Spine can just create herself."
19:26 <Skaya> "Let's buy a couple if we can manage it?" Skaya proposes. "One for Melissine and one for emergencies? Ah, and perhaps we could look into something that could let us teleport or travel to another plane. Like a bracelet or a ring, you know?"
19:27 <Devar> "If anyone's going to have it, it's her." Devar agrees and will head toward's The Spire!
19:41 <•Kotono> OOC:  Do any of yo us peak Aquan?
19:41 <Skaya> OOC: No
19:42 <Devar> OOC: That ring lets you! But I think you're not wearing it right now.
19:43 <•Kotono> You return to Spine's Spire. She's there, currently in a quiet conversation with a land dweller. Big, burly and muscled with wild, bushy red hair, and with skin with scaley red cracks all over. He wears well worn plate armor with a shield strapped to his back, and a heavy hammer over that as well. He speaks in a language neither of you recognize off hand like the currents and eddies of the
19:43 <•Kotono> ocean itself. Spine softly titters and responds in the same.
19:43 <•Kotono> Sanda tilts her head, and after a few moments, replies in the same. The two glance at her and the red haired man says more. You recognize your names amid it, too. Even Rina's, the last in a tone that sounds questioning.
19:44 <Skaya> That's why rumors are dangerous! Skaya thought they had to be about them, but there are clearly others visiting.
19:44 <•Kotono> Sanda hmphs and shakes her head, then points upward.
19:44 <•Kotono> More words from Spine at that, before, "But do any of you besides Sanda speak Aquan?" Spine switches to Common.
19:45 <•Kotono> "I'm afraid not," Anne says, "I know I don't, and I don't believe the others do as well."
19:46 <Devar> "I haven't managed to pick that one up yet." Devar admits. "Some of us learned the opposite on a rather interesting trip, but not Aquan."
19:46 <•Kotono> OOC: Just to be clear, you mean Ignan?
19:47 <Skaya> "Is it very important that we all speak it?" Skaya inquires.
19:48 <Devar> OOC: Yeah
19:51 <•Kotono> The red haired man speaks, this time in crackling pops that make the water around his mouth bubble. Ignan, pure and well spoken. "You speak the words of fire?" he asks, "Better than an impure tongue."
19:53 <Devar> "A few of us speak that, at least." Devar responds in Ignan. "I think most of us speak Draconic too, if it matters. Sorry, it sounds like you've heard of us but I don't think we've met, Sir...?"
19:59 <•Kotono> "Not in particular, but my guest has exacting tastes," Spine says softly.
19:59 <•Kotono> In Ignan to Devar, "Firehair." He answers bluntly, "Firehair Dragonsblood."
20:00 <Devar> That just sounds like a title, not a name!
20:00 <Skaya> "A very fitting name!" Skaya says in Draconic.
20:01 <Devar> Devar nods and gives him a slight bow. "Agreed. It's good to meet you." Devar says in Ignan. "Are you here on business, if you don't mind my asking?" At that, Devar will also take out the Earth's Winter Staff.

19:03 <•Kotono> The other hut looks empty. However, you can tell that the ground here has likewise been disturbed.
19:03 — Skaya digs through it as well!
19:06 <•Kotono> Buried at the bototm is a small, jet black stone. It's shiny-smootha nd maybe the size of a pebble. It stands out as a speck of black amid the water and dirt.
19:07 <Skaya> "Is it magic?" Skaya asks, not touching it for now.
19:08 <•Kotono> Sanda comes over and quickly chants before, "It is," she confirms. "Give me a minute."
19:08 → Kobot joined (~dunefar@20BBFB70.79723B99.DCB03E5F.IP)
19:09 <Devar> "If you need any help, let me know." Devar says.
19:09 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+15
19:09 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+15 --> [ 1d20=11 ]{26}
19:09 <•Kotono> "
19:09 <•Kotono> "It's strong but I can't puzzle out much else," Sanda admits thoughtfully, "Statistically speaking, the odds of it being powerful are high, but also dangerous."
19:10 <Skaya> "Well, wish me luck," Skaya says, picking it up.
19:10 <Devar> "Let me give it a go?" Devar asks.
19:10 <Skaya> "You can pick the next one up!"
19:11 <Devar> "I just mean to identify it." Devar says with a smile. "But if you want to leave it a mystery, that's fine."
19:15 <•Kotono> Skaya picks up the stone before-! OOC: Reflex save, goodluck.
19:16 <Skaya> roll 1d20+12+7 evasion
19:16 <Kobot> Skaya rolled 1d20+12+7 evasion --> [ 1d20=12 ]{31}
19:17 <•Kotono> Kyaaah! Out of instinct Skaya drops the stone, as suddenly all the water around her is sucked into the stone. She manages to leap-swim backwards, enough to get out of range. It lasts a few seconds and then ceases, water rushing back in to refill the momentarily empty space.
19:17 <•Kotono> Anne pulls Skaya back further, "Careful!"
19:17 <•Kotono> "As I said, dangerous," Sanda says, "See, I was right about the odds."
19:17 <Skaya> "Wow! It's pretty great! Let's bring it!"
19:19 <Devar> "Now that you've picked it up, shall I?" Devar asks, going in to properly identify this mysterious stone. OOC: Take 10 on spellcraft for 30, but using the identify spell.
19:21 <•Kotono> OOC: Are you using an item for it?
19:22 <Devar> OOC: Yeah, my artificer's monocle.
19:24 <•Kotono> OOC: CL check, go ahead and look up the CL for it and use that.
19:26 <Devar> OOC: It just says 'as if you had cast identify,' so I will assume my CL for it
19:26 <Devar> roll 1d20+8 CL
19:26 <Kobot> Devar rolled 1d20+8 CL --> [ 1d20=16 ]{24}
19:28 <•Kotono> OOC: Let me look it up myself thenr eal quick. MIC, right?
19:30 <Devar> OOC: Yep
19:30 <•Kotono> OOC: Item's name?
19:30 <Devar> OOC: Artificer's Monocle - it's on page 72
19:31 <•Kotono> OOC: CL's 5, it's right below body slot. So thta's a total of 21 then.
19:32 <•Kotono> Devar studies away and oh! OOC: Loo update.
19:32 <•Kotono> OOC: Loot.
19:35 <Devar> "Well, it leads somewhere, but we can investigate that when it's safer. I think as long as you don't physically touch it, it should be fine." Devar explains to the others. "Something like telekinesis or mage hand should work, too."
19:35 <•Kotono> "Would just nudging it with a stick or a weapon do?" Anne asks, plainly, "Why over complicate it?"
19:36 — Skaya immediately tries it with a stick!
19:36 <•Kotono> Nothing happens except moving the stone.
19:36 — Skaya pushes it into a small, empty bag, and then drops the bag into her haversack.
19:37 <Devar> "It's so weird that we run across that sort of thing a lot, isn't it?" Devar asks. "So many things don't ever factor in just moving something with a stick."
19:38 <Skaya> "If you can factor that in, how would it even stay buried in the ground?"
19:38 <Devar> "Don't let me turn into an archmage to ponder that question, okay?"
19:39 <•Kotono> The stone is safely stored away. Meanwhile, Sanda answers, "Touching something has symbolic and magical signifigance."
19:40 <Skaya> "Unlike touching something with a glove on, of course."
19:44 <•Kotono> "Obviously," Sanda sniffs as you finish this up. With that stone stored away, now what?
19:45 — Skaya fills up the hole to leave a proper hut and then suggests, "Let's keep looking for our bandit?"
19:46 <Devar> Devar nods and will keep on moving!
19:49 <•Kotono> roll 1d100+30
19:49 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d100+30 --> [ 1d100=37 ]{67}
19:49 <•Kotono> roll 1d100+35
19:49 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d100+35 --> [ 1d100=36 ]{71}
19:50 <•Kotono> You swim around for a few hours. No luck at first - until you come on it. The broken body of a merman, impaled to the sea floor with a sharp wood spear. It floats there, kept in place by the spear. It sits in the middle of the wide open ocean, no one visibly around.
19:51 — Skaya swims over to check if the merman is already dead.
19:52 <Devar> Wood? Huh. Devar stays a bit away to let Skaya do her investigation, keeping an eye out for an ambush in case this is a trap of some sort.
19:56 <•Kotono> OOC: Heal check for relevant secondary info, Skaya.
19:56 <•Kotono> OOC: PErception Devar.
19:57 <•Kotono> Anne looks about, "A message or pointless sadism?"
19:57 <Skaya> OOC: 10 for 16
19:57 <•Kotono> "Or both," Sanda's jaw clenches.
19:57 <•Kotono> Dead. Also for not that long if Skaya's look at it is right.
19:57 <Devar> OOC: Take 10 for 21
19:57 <Skaya> "Killed recently," Skaya says curtly. "Let's look around."
20:05 <•Kotono> Devar doesn't see anything unusual. Anne comes over and checks it as well, "Within an hour if my guess is right." OOC: Anne takes 10 for 26.
20:06 — Skaya decides to keep going in the same direction they were headed before. If they can manage to chance upon the killer, that's great. If not, they can circle around after a couple hours more.
20:07 <Devar> Devar follows along!
20:19 <•Kotono> roll 1d100+40
20:19 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d100+40 --> [ 1d100=61 ]{101}
20:20 <•Kotono> Ahead are great expanses of open sea growth and sea weed. It's taller than wheat on the surface and just as thick. Lots of open space here, but the ground itself is fairly well hidden.
20:20 <Skaya> "I wonder how tracking works underwater," Skaya muses. "Do you look at currents and what drifted alongside them?"
20:22 <Devar> "Probably, and I imagine plant life is a lot more important for being disturbed." Devar says.
20:23 <Devar> "This is definitely a good place to jump people." Devar says with a look around.
20:24 <Skaya> Agreeing, Skaya proceeds ahead, ready to be jumped!
20:28 <•Kotono> "Far too good," Anne remarks, "Distance may be our best friend or worst enemy. How far above all that we will matter."
20:28 <Skaya> roll 1d10+7 false life
20:28 <Kobot> Skaya rolled 1d10+7 false life --> [ 1d10=10 ]{17}
20:30 <•Kotono> For her part, Sanda swims smoothly upwards, "Whomever we want to be ambushed is best lowest?"
20:30 <•Kotono> Anne's eyes turn to Devar.
20:30 <•Kotono> After a beat Sanda matches that and, "Why Devar?"
20:30 Channel mode set to -t by •Kotono
20:30 <•Kotono> OOC: Fixed, Cor.
20:31 <Devar> "I'm the one who's basically a big target right now, it's fine!" Devar says as he does so - using his spell that currently is giving off daylight to hopefully see better down below.
20:32 Skaya set the topic: Skaya: 17+75/75 (+4 AC) Devar 91/91 (+7 AC, -4 to melee against) Anne 57/83 Sanda 60/60 Rina 85/85
20:32 <•Kotono> "Exactly," Anne says, "And if he gets gravely injured, I can heal him. Despite this armor, I'm slow underwater and not that great on defense."
20:33 <Devar> "This is the sort of thing I excel at." Devar promises. "If it keeps you all safe, I'm doing my job."
20:38 <•Kotono> OOC: Okay, distances and how y'all are moving relative to the sea floor and the tops of the seaweed?
20:40 <Devar> OOC: Let's say Devar's like 10ft above the seaweed casting light down into it if that works? If Skaya wants him somewhere else that's fine.
20:41 <Skaya> OOC: This is fine. Skaya would be 30ft above and slightly ahead. Sanda and Anne would be together and 50ft above Devar and slightly behind.
20:49 <•Kotono> OOC: That all works. Okay. in that case I need Devar to give me Perception. Skaya can as well, but with a -5 penalty.
20:49 <Skaya> roll 1d20+19-5
20:49 <Kobot> Skaya rolled 1d20+19-5 --> [ 1d20=18 ]{32}
20:50 <Devar> roll 1d20+11 might as well go for 20
20:50 <Kobot> Devar rolled 1d20+11 might as well go for 20 --> [ 1d20=11 ]{22}
20:54 <•Kotono> You go on for a little bit, to the soft sway of the seaweed and the movement of the currents. It's a whole other world here as fish swim by and above you. All manner of aquatic life, a few underwater trees growing beneath here as well. The ones here carry visible fruits, a dull blue color and in the general shape and size of melons. It's as Skaya sees this that she notices something - an odd
20:54 <•Kotono> movement of the seaweed below Devar, subtle but it stands out after watching it for some time.
20:55 <Skaya> "Devar, below you!" Skaya calls out, her wings propelling her down in the water!
20:56 <Devar> Devar turns to look that way, not wanting to get lost in the seaweed itself give the circumstances!
21:04 <•Kotono> Devar t urns - just in time to feel something start to impact him, unseen and yet powerful, as below he can glimpse a sudden flash of light. OOC: More.
21:05 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+11 touch AC Devar? not flatfooted at least
21:05 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+11 touch AC Devar? not flatfooted at least --> [ 1d20=8 ]{19}
21:05 <Devar> OOC: 21!
21:06 <•Kotono> A blast of raw power just misses him, exploding slightly above him and to the side. It's a narrow miss, extremely narrow as-! OOC: Init all.
21:07 <Skaya> roll 1d20+12
21:07 <Kobot> Skaya rolled 1d20+12 --> [ 1d20=11 ]{23}
21:07 <•Kotono> roll 1d20 Sanda is still bad at this
21:07 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20 Sanda is still bad at this --> [ 1d20=10 ]{10}
21:07 <Devar> roll 1d20+3 supreme initiative one day
21:07 <Kobot> Devar rolled 1d20+3 supreme initiative one day --> [ 1d20=20 ]{23}
21:07 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+4 Anne's still okay at this
21:07 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+4 Anne's still okay at this --> [ 1d20=13 ]{17}
21:07 <Devar> OOC: I mean I guess that works too
21:07 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+5 ???
21:07 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+5 ??? --> [ 1d20=3 ]{8}
21:08 <•Kotono> Init is Skaya = Devar (23) > Anne (17) > Sanda (10) > ??? (8)
21:08 <•Kotono> OOC: Open you two. Bear in mind that's whatever's down there currently has concealment at the moment.
21:08 <Devar> OOC: Not for long!
21:08 <Devar> Devar invokes the power of his Goldenfang and manifests glitterdust where he saw the flash from!
21:10 <Devar> OOC: admittedly I have no idea how glitterdust works underwater but I assume it's magic and therefore I don't need to worry about it, DC 22 will save to not be blinded, but whatever is in there is now covered in wet??? glittermud??
21:10 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+6 will save vs blinding
21:10 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+6 will save vs blinding --> [ 1d20=3 ]{9}
21:11 <•Kotono> Glitterdust rains below. The water quickly helps move it along, but there's still a coating on the seaweed below - and some man shaped thing glittering as well, some on him. There's definitely someone down there, and the gurgling scream of pain says a lot, too. There! OOC: Go Skaya.
21:11 — Skaya accelerates, slicing through the water towards Devar's attacker!
21:11 <Skaya> roll 1d20+12-2+7 attack! and also stun!
21:11 <Kobot> Skaya rolled 1d20+12-2+7 attack! and also stun! --> [ 1d20=2 ]{19}
21:12 <Skaya> roll 2d8+5
21:12 <Kobot> Skaya rolled 2d8+5 --> [ 2d8=9 ]{14}
21:12 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+7 fort vs stunning
21:12 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+7 fort vs stunning --> [ 1d20=20 ]{27}
21:12 <Skaya> OOC: Half that, so 7 damage and Fort DC20-- okay, he made the save
21:16 <•Kotono> Wham! Skaya swims down and kicks him right in the head. Definitel ya him. Older, white bearded and with a smooth staff carved of currently glittering, polished dark wood and with a red crystal atop it. Very classical magic staff, down to runes being engraved on it. He's knocked reeling as Anne holds, ready to provide support. She chants as magic surrounds her staff, before slamming it down
21:16 <•Kotono> hard, then going to grab him. OOC: Charge+melee attac with arcane channeling shocking grasp, then a quick cast shocking grasp to double dip.
21:16 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+17 Sanda thwack
21:16 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+17 Sanda thwack --> [ 1d20=10 ]{27}
21:17 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+13 melee touch
21:17 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+13 melee touch --> [ 1d20=12 ]{25}
21:19 <•Kotono> roll 1d12+8+5d6
21:19 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d12+8+5d6 --> [ 1d12=2 5d6=16 ]{26}
21:19 <•Kotono> roll 5d6
21:19 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 5d6 --> [ 5d6=17 ]{17}
21:21 <•Kotono> The merman, already injured, shakes and convulses all over. Electricity pours into him - and into the water around him, giving Skaya and Sanda a shocking surprise. OOC: Ref you two.
21:22 <Skaya> roll 1d20+12+7 evasion
21:22 <Kobot> Skaya rolled 1d20+12+7 evasion --> [ 1d20=10 ]{29}
21:22 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+9 Sanda
21:22 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+9 Sanda --> [ 1d20=13 ]{22}
21:22 <•Kotono> OOC: Skaya's off the hook, Sanda takes half of half on both of them. 16+17=33/2 is 16, and that /2 is 8.
21:23 •Kotono set the topic: Skaya: 17+75/75 (+4 AC) Devar 91/91 (+7 AC, -4 to melee against) Anne 57/83 Sanda 52/60 Rina 85/85
21:23 •Kotono set the topic: Skaya: 17+75/75 (+4 AC) Devar 91/91 (+7 AC, -4 to melee against) Anne 83/83 Sanda 52/60 Rina 85/85
21:24 <•Kotono> The shock is brutal. Sanda's hair toings out from it as the merman cooks, before convulsing all over. He blinding flails with the staff, before with a cry, "F-freeze!" he tries. OOC: He provokes AoOs from both of you.
21:24 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+17 Sanda thwack
21:24 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+17 Sanda thwack --> [ 1d20=20 ]{37}
21:24 <•Kotono> roll 1d20+17 Sanda thwack crit?
21:24 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+17 Sanda thwack crit? --> [ 1d20=11 ]{28}
21:24 <•Kotono> roll 2d12+16
21:24 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 2d12+16 --> [ 2d12=11 ]{27}
21:24 <Skaya> roll 1d20+12-2+7 again! and stun!
21:24 <Kobot> Skaya rolled 1d20+12-2+7 again! and stun! --> [ 1d20=1 ]{18}
21:25 <•Kotono> There's a wet, loud crack with that second impact, Sanda's staff getting him in the head. He drops the staff as blood begins to leak from a cracked open head. No further resistance, only one shocked and bashed in madman. OOC: Free act. That went about perfectly.
21:25 <Skaya> "Very nice, Sanda!" Skaya cheers, tapping her friend to heal her back up.
21:27 <Devar> Devar will fly down to the others. "Are you all okay?" He asks, frowning at the dead body. "Surely this wasn't the culprit of the merman...?"
21:27 <Skaya> "Who else waves a freezing staff?"
21:28 <•Kotono> "It was, however, undoubtedly our original target," Anne flies down, checking Sanda over after her shock.
21:29 Skaya set the topic: Skaya: 17+75/75 (+4 AC) Devar 91/91 (+7 AC, -4 to melee against) Anne 83/83 Sanda 60/60 Rina 85/85
21:29 <•Kotono> "Thanks," Skaya gets a smile from Sanda before, "I'm fine. I don't know if it was the one who killed the merman, though."
21:29 <Devar> Devar will kneel down to see what else, if anything, this individual has on them.
21:30 <•Kotono> "It doesn't fit," Anne muses, "No frost or force injuries on him. He died of impalement." A sigh, "By Kaja, why do so many grow foolish with treasure or power?"
21:30 <Devar> OOC: Detect magic / identify anything of magical in nature just so we don't find ourselves walking with a magic bomb or something.
21:33 <•Kotono> OOC: Sec to update loot.
21:37 <•Kotono> OOC: Updated.
21:38 <Devar> "Nothing but the staff, but this thing is dangerous." Devar says. "Do you want to look around some more?"
21:38 <Skaya> "For what, more bandits?"
21:39 <Devar> "Or anyone else causing trouble." Devar says. "I did expect to find... more people, from the way it was put to me."
21:40 <Skaya> "We can take a roundabout route back and have you fly low, I suppose," Skaya muses, "but we really should be professional about this and head back."
21:40 <•Kotono> "It may be luck, or our victims are elsewhere," Anne reasons, "However, we are on a timer, and it may be best to do this one mission at a time."
21:40 — Devar nods. "That's sensible. Let's get back, then." He says.
21:40 <•Kotono> "Really? I thought you two would be all over this," Sanda says as she begins to swim back, "I'd have guessed good odds on it."
21:41 <Skaya> "How come?"
21:41 <•Kotono> "You're both do gooders?" Sanda tilts her head a little to the side.
21:42 <•Kotono> "I do no good if I suddenly drown because we took too long and you aren't able to cast water breathing again," Anne retorts, "Unlikely, but I dislike the risk and see little gain in taking it. We can regroup and settle this matter before another."
21:42 <Skaya> "Given that your friend here has all the information about the criminals that local law enforcement can't deal with, isn't it the most efficient to go through her?"
21:43 <Devar> "I did admittedly forget about the water breathing part." Devar says. "Sorry!"
21:43 <Skaya> "Eh, we'll be fine. Probably."
21:44 <Devar> "If it gets really bad we can trade the ring and hold our breaths for really long amounts of time." Devar says. "But either way, let's get back so it isn't a problem."
21:44 <•Kotono> roll 1d100
21:44 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d100 --> [ 1d100=23 ]{23}
21:44 <•Kotono> roll 1d100
21:44 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d100 --> [ 1d100=98 ]{98}
21:44 <•Kotono> roll 1d100 subtable?
21:44 <Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d100 subtable? --> [ 1d100=11 ]{11}
21:50 <•Kotono> You swim back. About halfway there, you notice something. A small squad of mermaids with pickaxes, vigorously attacking the sea floor. IT's risen up, and stone has cracked and given way to the glitter of what looks to be some sort of gemstone ore. Maybe eight of them in total, all working away vigorously.
21:51 <Skaya> "Hey there!" Skaya greets the enthusiastic mermen. "What's going on?"
21:52 <•Kotono> They look up and a few wave. They're happy and a bit dirty, impressive as they're underwater. "We found one of the new treasures that came from the earth. It's gems!" A cheery call, "So back off, all of you! Land creatures can't keep up with us down here, anyway."
21:54 <Skaya> "We're fine and upright people!" Skaya calls back cheerfully. "Don't worry, we're not after your things." After a moment's thought, she adds, gesturing, "We saw a merman impaled through the chest with a wooden spear a ways back. Is there a bandit going around doing that like that ice staff wizard?"
21:55 <Devar> Devar decides to hold onto the information that they dealt with him because of Spine's request for now.
21:59 <•Kotono> One swims up - pretty, smiling and with a pickax in hand. "Haven't heard of it, but there's eight of us with weapons."
21:59 <•Kotono> "Not easy prey then," Anne surmises. "Just so."
22:01 <Skaya> "Maybe it was a dispute, then," Skaya muses. "Anything we should watch out for while here? Scary villains, vicious gangs?"
22:03 <•Kotono> An answer to that comes...Wednesday! OOC: It's about time for us, so we'll wrap that and the staff quest next time. That battle really went almost perfectly.

They're worth 920 gold total and used in planar trade. It's hardly the first time they've been seen, they tend to turn up here and there in Lady Spine's experience.
A large pile of glowing wooden cubes - The suggestion is to hold onto these or wait for more advanced testing, because they're something unusual and not easily identifiable. Otherwise there's an offer for 300 gold for them if you just want to be done with them.

I'm not seeing exact money for the Fortress of Lem payout from Spine, so let's go with 5,000 for the party. If I'm tired and missed it/forgot to record it in my notes, speak up.

Sack full of scrolls
Whirlpool Pebble: Any living creature that touches this pebble causes a small whirlpool to form around the stone in a 5ft radius. Any creature within that radius, including the creature who touches it, must succeed on a DC 20 Reflex save or be sucked in. Where the pebble leads to isn't clear.

Earth's Winter Staff

This staff is designed to be used by spellcasters who need direct force to defeat their opponents.

Magic Missile (1 charge)
Iceball (as fireball, but cold damage) (1 charges)
Orb Of Force (2 charges)
Cone Of Cold (2 charges)

18 charges left. However, this staff directly and steadily increases the bloodlust of the wielder. Use in combat increases this bloodlust further.

So it was.  Cert on the server is bad, but only newer clients would probably even care.

8500 for the staff.

Normally you'd be getting these in pearls and coral, but Spine had time to prepare and assumed you'd prefer surface coins. If you want otherwise, say so.
