Ebiris

[15:03] <Ebiris> Silverymoon, gem of the North, bastion of all that is good and noble in this often troubled part of Faerun, centre of wealth and knowledge, and so much more. But for Michael Ciaran, it perhaps most importantly represents a respite from the assassins who hounded him out of Waterdeep. (more)
[15:07] <Ebiris> But for all that keeping a low profile entails, a thief still needs to keep his skills sharp and his pockets filled. Therefore Michael has set about looking for a suitable target in this wealthy city without drawing the ire of either the local thieves guild or the Knights in Silver, and a ripe plum has presented itself.
[15:07] <Ebiris> Magnus Willoughsby is far from noble, but the man operates a wealthy trading coster between Silverymoon and Sundabar, and so his small mansion on the South fringes of Silverymoon represents an ideal target for a thief finding his way in a new city - wealthy, but not adorned with the strong defences favoured by the city's elite...
[15:10] * Michael chuckles to himself as he straps his gear on, leaving his pack hidden in his room. He once again runs the lay out of the building over in his head, and the entryways, running through possible escape plans as he travels down the streets, towards his target.
[15:13] <Ebiris> The grounds are surrounded by a ten foot high wall, with only a single gate to provide entrance. The building itself has two entrances - the main one at the front, and a servants entrance by the side. Beyond that, there's the usual array of glass windows on both floors - the substance is surprisingly common here in Silverymoon. And if one was feeling particularly adventurous, the chimmney and water closet could also be used to gain entry.
[15:17] * Michael slides up to the wall, following it around to the south-west corner and stopping for a moment to let the few sounds of his passing fall silent, then focuses on hearing what he can from over the wall.
[15:18] <Ebiris> The wall is made of flat bricks, making it a challenging prospect to climb without a rope or specialised equipment. Crenellated decorative spikes run all along the top of the wall.
[15:18] <Ebiris> OOC: listen check
[15:19] <Michael> roll d20+10 for listen
[15:19] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 for listen and gets 27." [d20=17]
[15:21] <Ebiris> Michael can hear a single set of footsteps, soft noises of leather upon grass as a single person patrols the gardens. Right now the noises indicate the person is near the East side of the garden and walking North.
[15:23] * Michael pulls out his rope and grappling hook, and with a small jump tries to latch it around one of the spikes as quietly as he can, listening for change in the foot steps before climbing up.
[15:23] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[15:23] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 15." [1d20=15]
[15:23] <Ebiris> The footsteps abruptly stop.
[15:24] * Michael grips one of his short swords, and stays silent and unmoving, continuing to listen.
[15:25] <Ebiris> All is silent for several long and tension filled seconds, before the footsteps resume, still moving away to the North...
[15:25] * Michael quickly climbs up and over the wall, as silently as he can, bringing the rope and hook down with him on the other side.
[15:26] <Ebiris> OOC: climb check
[15:26] <Michael> roll d20+3
[15:26] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+3 and gets 5." [d20=2]
[15:27] <Ebiris> Michael scrambles up the wall, but can't quite get a good grip on the top and avoid the spikes at the same time, causing him to slip and fall back the way he came! Luckily it's only a small drop, so the only thing bruised is his pride...
[15:27] <Ebiris> OOC: listen check again
[15:28] <Michael> roll d20+10
[15:28] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 and gets 30." [d20=20]
[15:29] <Ebiris> The footsteps have stopped again! Michael does not he landed with a pretty audible thud, there...
[15:30] * Michael growls under his breath and waits once more, focusing for the steps.
[15:30] <Ebiris> They start up again after a second, now heading in your general direction.
[15:31] * Michael waits silently, but ready to react..
[15:32] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[15:32] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 2." [1d20=2]
[15:33] <Ebiris> The footsteps stop fairly near your location on the other side of the wall - you can see some light being shed overhead from the same area. "Could've sworn..." you hear a soft muttering, before the footsteps begin to move off again, now to the North-west.
[15:34] * Michael waits for the footsteps to get decently far away, then tries again to climb up..
[15:35] <Ebiris> OOC: climb check again
[15:35] <Michael> roll d20+3
[15:35] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+3  and gets 17." [d20=14]
[15:35] <Ebiris> Michael clambers up easily, although those spikes are going to be tricky to negotiate without hurting himself as he clears the edge...
[15:35] <Ebiris> OOC: dex check
[15:36] <Michael> roll d20+4
[15:36] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+4 and gets 19." [d20=15]
[15:37] <Ebiris> But with some careful maneuvering, Michael is able to get past safely and jump down to the grass below. Just ahead of him he can see a small wooden structure, with the actual house itself seen beyond that to the North. The overcast skies provide precious little light today, although the lamps by the gate shed enough to see by, for the most part.
[15:38] <Ebiris> tonight*
[15:39] * Michael coils his rope and hook up, stowing it away, and darts over to the house quickly, stopping next to the nearest window in a crouch.
[15:39] <Ebiris> OOC: move silently
[15:39] <Michael> roll d20+14
[15:39] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+14 and gets 16." [d20=2]
[15:39] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[15:39] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 14." [1d20=14]
[15:41] <Ebiris> Michael scurries across the lawn to the house. It's hard to see in the window on account of the drawn curtains, sadly. He can see the servant's entrance along to his left, however, near the other side of the building.
[15:42] * Michael waits a few moments for any indication of a reaction before examining the window carefully.
[15:43] <Ebiris> OOC: listen check
[15:43] <Michael> roll d20+10
[15:43] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 and gets 14." [d20=4]
[15:44] <Ebiris> After a moment, Michael can hear footsteps making their way  South from the Northeast - they'll be going past his location shortly, though near the boundary wall on the East side of the garden.
[15:45] * Michael glances around for a suitible hiding spot, a bush or corner in the wall..
[15:46] <Ebiris> This part of the garden is pretty much a bare lawn. The only real concealment would be by going behind the mansion or the wooden shed.
[15:46] * Michael gauges the distance to the shed and then heads over to it, settling in to hide.
[15:47] <Ebiris> OOC: move silently~
[15:47] <Michael> roll d20+14
[15:47] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+14 and gets 16." [d20=2]
[15:47] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[15:47] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 19." [1d20=19]
[15:48] <Ebiris> As Michael scurries behind the shed, he can hear the footsteps approaching him, now at a decent clip.
[15:48] * Michael crouches back into the shadows, readying his swords, just in case.
[15:49] <Ebiris> OOC: hide check~
[15:49] <Michael> roll d20+14
[15:49] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+14 and gets 18." [d20=4]
[15:50] <Ebiris> Michael can see a young man in studded leather carrying both a lantern and a club come around the side of the shed, looking around warily.
[15:50] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[15:50] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 13." [1d20=13]
[15:52] <Ebiris> He peers around for a moment, but even with his light source he can't seem to pinpoint Michael's location in the midnight gloom. Frowning, he puts away his club and wanders off, muttering irritably to himself.
[15:53] * Michael waits for the man to get around the side of the building and then darts back to the window, examining it while pulling his theive's tools out..
[15:54] <Ebiris> The window appears to be bolted shut from the inside. Brute force would be the only way to open it from outside.
[15:55] * Michael considers.. Then darts around to the water closet, and examines it.
[15:56] <Ebiris> OOC: the water closet is on the side of the building that the guard just went around
[15:56] <Michael> OOC: Ah, okay.
[15:57] * Michael shuffles over to the corner of the building, and follows behind the guard, keeping distance until he goes around the next corner.
[15:59] <Ebiris> Around here is only a somewhat narrow gap between the house and the boundary wall. Halfway along is found the water closet, opening overhead where refuse matter may fall down into a hole in the ground that assumedly leads to the sewers. It smells rather bad.
[16:03] * Michael looks it over, shaking his head, knowing he couldn't make it up that.. Michael goes back to the previous window and unsheathes one of his swords, preparing to use it to lever the window open..
[16:04] <Ebiris> OOC: listen check~
[16:04] <Michael> roll d20+10
[16:04] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 and gets 30." [d20=20]
[16:06] <Ebiris> As he begins to work, Michael can hear those same footsteps again, following the exact same route as before...
[16:06] * Michael grinds his teeth, wishing he had a sap, and abandons his work for taking cover behind the shed once more..
[16:06] <Ebiris> OOC: move silently~
[16:07] <Michael> roll d20+14
[16:07] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+14 and gets 27." [d20=13]
[16:07] <Ebiris> Michael scurries behind the shed once more, still hearing the footsteps at a distance as they methodically plod along, not seeming to change their pace or direction.
[16:08] * Michael waits for the guard to turn the corner before going back to work.
[16:09] <Ebiris> It takes a minute or so for the guard to pass and then make his way around the house before Michael returns to the window.
[16:09] <Ebiris> OOC: strength check to lever the window open if that's what you're trying
[16:09] <Michael> roll d20+3
[16:09] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+3 and gets 18." [d20=15]
[16:11] <Ebiris> The window resists at first, but then with a satisfying crunch, Michael is able to force the bolt out of the timbers, freeing the window to be opened!
[16:11] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[16:11] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 11." [1d20=11]
[16:15] * Michael slides the window open and rolls into the room, remaining behind the drapes and sliding it shut, then staying where he's hidden, listening for a reaction..
[16:15] <Ebiris> OOC: listen check
[16:16] <Michael> roll d20+10
[16:16] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 and gets 24." [d20=14]
[16:17] <Ebiris> Michael finds himself in a pitch black room with the drapes closed. Although in the moment they were open he could identify it as a sitting room judging by the furniture. He can hear the footsteps of the guard outside, still continuing his monotonous patrol.
[16:18] * Michael slides out from the drapes and checks over the room, looking for anything of interest..
[16:19] <Ebiris> It is very dark. Michael cannot see much of anything.
[16:20] * Michael feels his way across the walls, looking for the door..
[16:22] <Ebiris> Michael finds a door! It is made of wood and has a knob.
[16:22] * Michael cracks it open, just barely, hoping for light from the hallway..
[16:23] <Ebiris> Some light comes in via the small window above the front door, though it's very scant illumination, barely enough to see the hall by, and certainly not doing anything for the sitting room.
[16:23] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[16:23] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 15." [1d20=15]
[16:24] <Ebiris> Michael can also hear an exclamation from outside by the window he came in. "What the...!"
[16:25] * Michael fully shuts the door, and then moves back near the window, drawing his blades as he goes.
[16:26] <Ebiris> As he reaches the window, Gregory is just in time to see the drapes pushed aside by a club-wielding hand, the same guard from before seen looking inside!
[16:26] <Ebiris> OOC: surprise round go
[16:27] <Ebiris> Michael*
[16:29] * Michael lunges at him, bringing his blades to bare!
[16:30] <Ebiris> OOC: your in range to five foot step and full attack, but he has cover thanks to the window. Go ahead and attack.
[16:30] <Michael> roll d20+8 for swing 1
[16:30] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 for swing 1 and gets 27." [d20=19]
[16:30] <Michael> roll d20+8 for swing 2
[16:30] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 for swing 2 and gets 9." [d20=1]
[16:31] <Ebiris> OOC: critfail check and crit check...
[16:31] <Michael> roll d20+8 for crit fail confirm
[16:31] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 for crit fail confirm and gets 28." [d20=20]
[16:31] <Michael> roll d20+8 for crit check confirm
[16:31] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 for crit check confirm and gets 17." [d20=9]
[16:31] <Ebiris> OOC: crit and miss
[16:32] <Michael> roll 5d6+4
[16:32] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls 5d6+4 and gets 20." [5d6=1, 1, 6, 3, 5]
[16:33] <Ebiris> The guard draws breath to yell the alarm but is suddenly and irrevocably silenced as Michael's sword stabs into his throat! With barely a pained gurgle, he twitches lifelessly and slides off the blade to the grass below, quite dead.
[16:34] * Michael reaches out of the window and drags him into the room, not forgetting to grab his sword.
[16:36] <Ebiris> Michael drags the bleeding corpse through the window, staining the floorboards with crimson vitae as the body is manhandled inside.
[16:36] * Michael quickly searches over the body for anything useful.
[16:37] <Ebiris> Found on the body is: a key! There's also the lantern and the club he was carrying before you killed him. And he's wearing studded leather armour.
[16:38] * Michael takes the club and uses the lantern to search the room for anything useful..
[16:43] <Ebiris> There's several plush chairs and a couch here, along with a large fireplace. Looks rather nice, certainly, and there's several paintings and statuettes adorning the place - of particular note is a two foot tall silver statuette of a woman atop the mantlepiece.
[16:44] <Ebiris> OOC: knowledge religon if you have it. Or int check, since the DC is low.
[16:44] <Michael> roll d20+3
[16:44] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+3 and gets 11." [d20=8]
[16:45] <Ebiris> The statue is of Selune, goddess of the Moon.
[16:46] <Ebiris> She's very popular here in Silverymoon, so probably not surprising. Regardless, it's a big chunk of silver.
[16:47] * Michael grins slightly and slips it into his pack, then heads over to the window and body, snagging the guard's armor, but pausing before slipping out of the window.
[16:49] <Michael> "I dunno who you are, but this time 'round, you were delt the worse hand. Tymora may have graced me with the winning hand from the two of us, but I lost the game still. May the lady of luck guide ya to the after-life ya deserve."
[16:49] <Ebiris> It's a bit of a struggle, but Michael is able to divest the horribly bleeding corpse of its armour.
[16:49] * Michael drops a gold coin on the body's chest and slips out the window, heading towards the wall where he climbed over.
[16:50] <Ebiris> Michael reaches the wall without incident.
[16:51] * Michael sets the armor down and again pulls out his rope and grappling hook, attempting to repeat his earlier wall climbing.
[16:51] <Ebiris> OOC: climb check
[16:52] * Michael attaches the armor to the bottom of the rope before making his climb, intending to drag it up after himself.
[16:52] <Michael> roll d20+3
[16:52] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+3 and gets 11." [d20=8]
[16:52] <Ebiris> OOC: and a dex check to avoid stabbing yourself on the spikes
[16:52] <Michael> roll d20+4
[16:52] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+4 and gets 12." [d20=8]
[16:53] <Ebiris> roll 1d4
[16:53] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d4 and gets 2." [1d4=2]
[16:53] <Ebiris> Michael clears the wall, but not withoug accidentally stabbing his palm on one of the spikes, drawing some blood as he clambers over to freedom.
[16:54] * Michael shakes his hand, drags the armor over, and stows his rope and hook, then wanders off into the night, taking a round-about route back to his abode.

Ebiris

Michael will earn no XP, as his will match the party's when he joins up. But he does earn loot!

- Statuette of Selune - 350gp
- Studded Leather - 25gp

Ebiris

[15:01] <Ebiris> After his somewhat botched robbery of the Willoughsby estate, Michael has a few days to regroup and plan his next move. And of course sell off the proceeds - while the guard's armour wasn't much, he was at least able to offload that silver statuette for a handsome price. And now, once again, Silverymoon is laid out before him in all its grandeur, opportunity and adventure beckoning, if only he's able to grasp it...
[15:06] * Michael goes about his room, packing his gear, and taking his new additions, and heads out into the town, intent on finding a new possible target for his theivery.
[15:11] <Ebiris> The sun is just creeping low to the horizon as Michael sets out into the still somewhat busy streets of Silverymoon, searching for an unlucky mark. Silverymoon of course boasts many fine shops, some extravagant and brimming with magic (and no doubt magical defences) while others simply sell daily necesseities, and are correspondingly less well guarded. Choices stretch before Michael to consider his path...
[15:16] * Michael grins to himself as he picks his mark: an up-and-comming mage's shop.
[15:17] <Ebiris> OOC: make a gather info check
[15:18] <Michael> roll d20-1
[15:18] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20-1 and gets 19." [d20=20]
[15:23] <Ebiris> There are several to choose from, some considerably more imposing than others.
[15:23] <Ebiris> Still, with a bit of legwork and discreet questioning turns up a promising lead - Maugrim's Enchanted Panopoly is an ostentatiously named but somewhat meagrely stocked shop down a darkened alley off Brightbuckler street. The young wizard there stocks a few scrolls and potions, but mostly works on commission. As easy a target as you're likely to find among Silverymoon's magical community.
[15:26] * Michael watches the house and marks out the enterences to the building, and waits until nightfall to begin his attempt..
[15:30] <Ebiris> There's two entrances, as far as Michael can tell - the front door, obviously, and a side door on the upper floor that leads onto an open landing shared by several other buildings and leads onto Northstand Street, which is on higher ground than Brightbuckler Street.
[15:30] <Ebiris> The shop doesn't seem to do a huge trade from all that Michael can see - only three customers seen coming and going during his stakeout before the shutters are finally drawn over the windows and the Open sign flipped to Closed from inside.
[15:33] * Michael waits for a few more hours and then makes his move, leading off to the landing first, but not fully entering it, and takes stock of the area.
[15:35] <Ebiris> The landing is perhaps 30-35 feet wide at its widest, doors leading into several residences including your target's. A single lampost in the centre of the area sheds a soft silver glow of magical light over the area, illuminating the white paving stones and small flower gardens decorating the fringes of the area.
[15:36] * Michael watches the other residences for any sign of movement before darting to the door of the shop and pausing to listen for anything beyond it.
[15:37] <Ebiris> OOC: Using the door up on the landing still, yes?
[15:37] <Michael> OOC: Yeah.
[15:37] <Ebiris> OOC: listen and spot checks
[15:37] <Michael> Roll d20+10 spot
[15:38] <Ebiris> OOC: don't use a capital R
[15:38] <Michael> roll d20+10 spot
[15:38] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 spot and gets 24." [d20=14]
[15:38] <Michael> roll d20+10 listen
[15:38] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 listen and gets 20." [d20=10]
[15:40] <Ebiris> Doesn't seem to be anyone out and about here, and all the windows Michael can see are either dark or obscured by curtains. Listening at the door, Michael can hear no sounds from within.
[15:41] * Michael begins checking over the door, looking for traps and inspecting the lock, and then gets to work opening it.
[15:41] <Ebiris> OOC: search check first of all
[15:42] <Michael> roll d20+13 search
[15:42] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+13 search and gets 33." [d20=20]
[15:43] <Ebiris> No traps are seen by Michael. For that matter, the door doesn't even appear to have a lock on it.
[15:44] * Michael begins to slowly open the door, peering into the room as he opens it.
[15:44] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[15:44] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 7." [1d20=7]
[15:45] <Ebiris> So Michael tries. But he soon finds that despite the lack of a lock, the door stubbornly refuses to budge in the least to his gentle attempts at opening it. Perhaps it's stuck?
[15:46] * Michael worries about the noise required to force the door, and heads back around to the front door, pausing to watch the street before approaching the door.
[15:47] <Ebiris> OOC: spot check
[15:47] <Michael> roll d20+10 spot
[15:47] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 spot and gets 30." [d20=20]
[15:48] <Ebiris> The alley down here is somewhat dark, off the main streets of Silverymoon, with just a bit of light spilling from above. But no one seems to be around...
[15:48] * Michael heads over to the door and inspects it..
[15:48] <Ebiris> OOC: search check
[15:49] <Michael> roll d20+13
[15:49] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+13 and gets 21." [d20=8]
[15:51] <Ebiris> Michael doesn't see any traps on this door, although unlike the one upstairs, it is secured by a solid looking lock.
[15:51] * Michael pulls out his tools and begins working on the lock..
[15:51] <Ebiris> OOC: open lock check
[15:52] <Michael> roll d20+16
[15:52] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+16 and gets 17." [d20=1]
[15:52] <Ebiris> Despite Michael's best efforts, the lock stubbornly refuses to give as he works away on bypassing it...
[15:52] <Ebiris> OOC: listen check
[15:53] <Michael> roll d20+10
[15:53] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 and gets 20." [d20=10]
[15:54] <Ebiris> As he works, Michael can hear the rhythmic clanking noises of an armoured figure walking down the street at the end of the alleyway.
[15:54] * Michael looks up, pockets his tools and looks around for any decent hiding places..
[15:57] <Ebiris> There's several recessed doorways along the dark alley which should provide ample concealment from anyone looking down from the street. As far as hiding from anyone that comes down the alley itself? Less so. The footsteps are getting closer.
[16:00] * Michael darts into one of the doorways, pulling his mask on and throwing his cloak further over himself, breaking up the lines of his body and drawing his sap in hand..
[16:01] <Ebiris> OOC: hide check
[16:01] <Michael> roll d20+14
[16:01] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+14 and gets 19." [d20=5]
[16:01] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[16:01] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 3." [1d20=3]
[16:02] <Ebiris> The footsteps pause for a second just at the mouth of the alley, and Michael can see torchlight flickering over the walls as a light source is shined down the cramped street. It only lasts a second before the steps resume and the light vanishes, moving off and away.
[16:03] * Michael steps out and back to the door, resuming his work..
[16:03] <Ebiris> OOC: open locks
[16:03] <Michael> roll d20+16
[16:03] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+16 and gets 30." [d20=14]
[16:04] <Ebiris> This time he's able to get it, fiddling away with the mechanism for a minute or so before it gives with a satisfying click, sliding the bolt aside to leave the door unlocked!
[16:07] * Michael opens the door slightly and peers beyond, waiting for a magical trap or reaction..
[16:08] <Ebiris> It's very dark inside, so Michael can't see much. A few shadowed shapes indicate counters and shelves, but it's impossible to make out detail in the everpresent gloom of night.
[16:10] * Michael slips in, and closes the door behind him, and waits for his eyes to adjust as best they can.
[16:12] <Ebiris> It's very dark, but Michael can make out a little. The shelves seem to be mostly decorated with bottles and vials, from the ill defined shapes he can perceive, although there does appear to be plenty of other strange objects. Perhaps spell components or alchemy ingredients? It's very hard to make out in this near pitch black surrounding.
[16:16] * Michael takes out his lantern and puts it against the wall, letting the light be cut and reduced into a bright ambient glow, quickly taking stock of the room, but not looking directly at the light, before blocking out the light again.
[16:17] <Ebiris> Now Michael can see a bit better - the left hand counter seems to contain various potion vials, while the right has some recognisable alchemic substances - tanglefoot bags, alchemist's fire and the like. What looks like a rack of scrolls is behind the far counter, near a set of stairs leading up.
[16:17] <Ebiris> OOC: listen check
[16:18] <Michael> roll d20+10 listen
[16:18] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 listen and gets 16." [d20=6]
[16:18] <Ebiris> OOC: carry on
[16:20] * Michael puts his lantern away again, and heads over to the rack of scrolls and inspects them as well as he can, trying to figure out if they're in an order system or not..
[16:20] <Ebiris> roll 2d6+2
[16:20] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 2d6+2 and gets 6." [2d6=1, 3]
[16:22] <Ebiris> OOC: search check
[16:22] <Michael> roll d20+13
[16:22] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+13 and gets 14." [d20=1]
[16:22] <Ebiris> The rack is mostly bare, only about six scrolls there. None of them are labelled that Michael can see, and they've all been rolled up tightly.
[16:23] * Michael takes them all and slides them into his pack, pausing to listen again, and reoirent himself..
[16:23] <Ebiris> OOC: listen check
[16:24] <Michael> roll d20+10
[16:24] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 and gets 29." [d20=19]
[16:25] <Ebiris> It isn't hard to hear at all - someone is coming down the stairs. You can even see some flickering light now starting to emanate down onto the floor in that direction...
[16:28] * Michael darts over to the stairwell and pauses in a crouch, drawing his sap and preparing to relieve this person of their conciousness..
[16:28] <Ebiris> OOC: just to clarify, you're against the wall right next to where the stairwell comes down onto the shop, or directly in front of the stairwell?
[16:29] <Michael> OOC: Against the wall, next to the stairwell.
[16:29] <Ebiris> roll 1d4+1
[16:29] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d4+1 and gets 5." [1d4=4]
[16:30] <Ebiris> Tense and ready in waiting, Michael is prepared to strike just as... five identical figures step down onto the floor, each one the image of a young human in green pajamas. He barely has time to register any shock before the rogue strikes, however!
[16:30] <Ebiris> OOC: Go, surprise round
[16:33] <Michael> roll d20+9
[16:33] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+9 and gets 14." [d20=5]
[16:33] <Ebiris> roll 1d6
[16:33] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d6 and gets 1." [1d6=1]
[16:34] <Ebiris> "Gah!" the man cries out in surprise as he's struck, only for Michael's sap to be redirected at the last second by a shimmering field of force! "Thief!" he yells, far too loudly.
[16:34] <Ebiris> OOC: init
[16:35] <Michael> roll d20+4
[16:35] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+4 and gets 14." [d20=10]
[16:35] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+3
[16:35] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+3 and gets 22." [1d20=19]
[16:38] <Ebiris> "How dare you!" the wizard cries as all five of him begin to gesticulate and incant, preparing a spell!
[16:38] <Ebiris> OOC: Attack of opportunity, since you still threaten him
[16:39] <Michael> roll d20+9
[16:39] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+9 and gets 18." [d20=9]
[16:40] <Ebiris> roll 1d6
[16:40] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d6 and gets 3." [1d6=3]
[16:40] <Ebiris> Michael takes advantage of the wizard dropping his guard to strike, but his sap only causes one of the images to vanish, not hurting the genuine article as the wizard finishes his spell with a strident command of "Be still!"
[16:40] <Ebiris> OOC: will save
[16:41] <Michael> roll d20+2
[16:41] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+2 and gets 5." [d20=3]
[16:42] <Ebiris> As the spell takes effect, Michael feels his muscles freeze up, paralyzing him utterly!
[16:42] <Ebiris> OOC: you're held, but can make a will save each round to try and throw it off. Since it's your turn now, go ahead and try again.
[16:43] <Michael> roll d20+2
[16:43] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+2 and gets 22." [d20=20]
[16:43] <Ebiris> OOC: that did it - you're still held until your next turn, though, since that's a full round action
[16:45] <Ebiris> With Michael seemingly held prisoner, the wizard rushes to poke his head out the door, yelling his lungs out, "Guards! Guards! I've caught a thief!"
[16:45] <Ebiris> OOC: your go, now
[16:46] * Michael springs at the man and swings the sap once more.
[16:46] <Michael> roll d20+9
[16:46] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+9 and gets 26." [d20=17]
[16:46] <Ebiris> roll 1d5
[16:46] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d5 and gets 2." [1d5=2]
[16:48] <Ebiris> Another of the mirror images vanishes, though four are still left! "Struggling only makes it worse - the guard will be here in moments!" the wizard crows, stepping back through the door and into the alley as he casts another spell, causing a flash of rainbow coloured light to obscure Michael's vision!
[16:48] <Ebiris> OOC: will save
[16:49] <Michael> roll d20+2
[16:49] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+2 and gets 16." [d20=14]
[16:49] <Ebiris> Yet Michael shrugs off any ill effect from the spell, his vision returning in an instant as the lightshow diminishes!
[16:49] <Ebiris> OOCL your go
[16:50] <Michael> OOC: is he between me and the door?
[16:50] <Ebiris> OOC: He's outside the door. The door is between you and him, now.
[16:50] <Michael> OOC: I mean, can I run without having to go through him?
[16:51] <Ebiris> OOC: You would have to go through him, yes. He's outside but effectively blocking the doorway.
[16:54] * Michael drops his sap and draws his blades, swinging at the mage.
[16:54] <Michael> roll d20+8 swing 1
[16:54] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 swing 1 and gets 28." [d20=20]
[16:54] <Michael> roll d20+8 swing 2
[16:54] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 swing 2 and gets 18." [d20=10]
[16:54] <Ebiris> OOC: confirm the crit, I guess
[16:55] <Michael> roll d20+8 crit confirm
[16:55] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 crit confirm and gets 12." [d20=4]
[16:55] <Ebiris> roll 1d4
[16:55] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d4 and gets 4." [1d4=4]
[16:55] <Ebiris> roll 1d3
[16:55] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d3 and gets 3." [1d3=3]
[16:56] <Ebiris> Michael unleashes a flurry of blows against the mage, who recoils in fear even as he's stripped of all but one of his mirror images, leaving a pair of twins guarding the doorway! "Curse you, you blackguard!" he cries, stepping further back into the alley and away from Michael's murderous blades as he casts another spell!
[16:57] <Ebiris> OOC: will save
[16:57] <Michael> roll d20=2
[16:57] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20=2 and gets Error: Numeric values only." [d20=20]
[16:57] <Michael> roll d20+2
[16:57] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+2 and gets 11." [d20=9]
[16:58] <Ebiris> OOC: that first roll was a 20, so I'll take that
[16:59] <Michael> OOC: Oh, it still read it?
[16:59] <Ebiris> Once again Michael resists whatever magic is cast upon him, free to act as he pleases!
[16:59] <Ebiris> OOC: your go
[16:59] * Michael snarls at the man and lunges again.
[16:59] <Michael> roll d20+8 swing 1
[16:59] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 swing 1 and gets 19." [d20=11]
[16:59] <Michael> roll d20+8 swing 2
[16:59] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 swing 2 and gets 28." [d20=20]
[16:59] <Ebiris> OOC: confirm the crit?
[16:59] <Michael> roll d20+8 confirm
[16:59] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 confirm and gets 27." [d20=19]
[17:00] <Ebiris> roll 1d2
[17:00] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d2 and gets 1." [1d2=1]
[17:00] <Ebiris> OOC: both hit, roll damage
[17:00] <Michael> roll d6+4 swing 1
[17:00] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d6+4 swing 1 and gets 9." [d6=5]
[17:00] <Michael> roll d6+4 swing 2
[17:00] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d6+4 swing 2 and gets 8." [d6=4]
[17:00] <Ebiris> OOC: second was a crit, remember
[17:02] <Michael> roll d6+4
[17:02] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d6+4 and gets 6." [d6=2]
[17:05] <Ebiris> Lunging in, Michael's blades do their bloody work, cutting deeply through the wizard's flesh with no resistance! With a strangled cry, he sinks to the ground, bleeding profusely from his surely fatal wounds, and his illusory doppelganger doing much the same! All around Michael can hear commotion, however, illumination coming from surrounding windows and running footsteps heard approaching from the street he heard a guard patrolling earlier!
[17:06] * Michael sheathes his blades, turns, scoops up his sap, and darts up the stairs, as quickly and quietly as he can.
[17:07] <Ebiris> Leaving his bloody work behind him, Michael flees up the stairs, emerging into what looks like a sitting room - a fireplace and a few soft chairs hereabouts. One door is seen leading out onto the landing he surveyed earlier, while the other (open) one appears to go into a bedroom.
[17:08] * Michael flashes towards the door to the landing and tests it, hoping to find his earlier trouble with it gone..
[17:08] <Ebiris> The door refuses to budge. Likely it will require some muscle to force it open...
[17:08] <Ebiris> OOC: strength check if you want to try
[17:09] * Michael slams into the door, hoping for luck..
[17:09] <Michael> roll d20+3
[17:09] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+3 and gets 20." [d20=17]
[17:11] <Ebiris> No good! Despite Michael's best efforts, the door remains rigid and firm in the face of his abuse!
[17:11] * Michael turns and darts into the bedroom, quickly taking stock of the room..
[17:13] <Ebiris> It's fairly small and spartan. There's a single bed with accompanying nightstand, and a bookcase. And also a housecat which immediately lunges at Michael with claws outstretched!
[17:13] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+4
[17:13] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+4 and gets 19." [1d20=15]
[17:13] <Ebiris> OOC: flat footed AC?
[17:15] <Michael> OOC: Uncanny Dodge, normal AC.
[17:15] <Michael> OOC: 20, if you don't have it open.
[17:16] <Ebiris> But the cat fails to penetrate Michael's breeches, unable to hurt him at all!
[17:16] <Ebiris> OOC: init
[17:17] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+2
[17:17] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+2 and gets 4." [1d20=2]
[17:17] <Michael> roll d20+4
[17:17] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+4 and gets 16." [d20=12]
[17:17] <Ebiris> OOC: Go
[17:18] * Michael draws and swings his blades at the small cat..
[17:18] <Michael> roll d20+8
[17:18] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 and gets 20." [d20=12]
[17:18] <Michael> roll d20+8
[17:18] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 and gets 9." [d20=1]
[17:18] <Michael> roll d20+8 crit fail confirm
[17:18] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 crit fail confirm and gets 12." [d20=4]
[17:19] <Ebiris> OOC: roll 1d100
[17:19] <Michael> roll d100
[17:19] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d100 and gets 86." [d100=86]
[17:19] <Michael> OOC: thought you did that.
[17:20] <Ebiris> OOC: hit and a critfail, roll damage
[17:20] <Michael> roll d6+4
[17:20] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d6+4 and gets 8." [d6=4]
[17:20] <Ebiris> The cat meows in pain as Michael's sword draws blood, before his follow up causes him to overbalance, giving the feline an opportunity while he recovers!
[17:21] <Ebiris> The cat doesn't stick around, however, instead tearing out of the bedroom and down the stairs!
[17:21] * Michael grinds his teeth.
[17:22] * Michael looks around for a hiding spot and pulls one of his Sleep Scrolls out, in preperation.
[17:24] <Ebiris> You could perhaps hide under the bed. Besides that, maybe behind the door?
[17:24] * Michael rolls under the bed, and gets the scroll ready, peeking out from under it..
[17:26] <Ebiris> OOC: hide check
[17:26] <Michael> roll d20=14
[17:26] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20=14 and gets Error: Numeric values only." [d20=11]
[17:26] <Michael> OOC: Damn it, 25 total.
[17:26] <Ebiris> The seconds tick by, far too long. But soon Michael hears heavy footsteps thundering up the stairs, accompanied by frenetic miaowing, before he sees the same bloodied up cat return, and a set of steel boots and greaves belonging to someone else!
[17:27] <Ebiris> OOC: you can act before they take their spot checks if you want
[17:27] * Michael fires off the scroll from his hiding place..
[17:27] <Michael> roll d20+9
[17:27] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+9 and gets 24." [d20=15]
[17:28] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+1
[17:28] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+1 and gets 8." [1d20=7]
[17:28] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+1
[17:28] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+1 and gets 4." [1d20=3]
[17:29] <Ebiris> With a pair of thuds, one louder than the other, the cat and a middle aged human in a breastplate fall over, snoring soundly.
[17:30] * Michael rolls out from under the bed and surveys the room, listening for other people down stairs.
[17:31] <Ebiris> OOC: listen check
[17:32] <Michael> roll d20+10
[17:32] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+10 and gets 21." [d20=11]
[17:32] <Ebiris> Michael can hear muffled cursing coming from downstairs.
[17:33] * Michael pulls out his sap and swings at the sleeping guard's head..
[17:34] <Ebiris> OOC: a coup de grace is basically a full damage crit, so work out what that comes to and tell me?
[17:34] <Michael> OOC: roger, and sneak damage applies too.
[17:34] <Ebiris> OOC: yes
[17:34] <Michael> roll 2d6+4 for hit
[17:34] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls 2d6+4 for hit and gets 11." [2d6=5, 2]
[17:34] <Michael> roll 4d6 for sneak
[17:34] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls 4d6 for sneak and gets 10." [4d6=5, 3, 1, 1]
[17:35] <Michael> OOC: 22 total.
[17:36] <Ebiris> OOC: you don't roll, you just take the max damage, so really it'd be 40.
[17:36] <Michael> OOC: ah, didn't know that.
[17:36] <Ebiris> The brave knight of Silverymoon doesn't even know what hit him before Michael renders him even more unconscious! That'll leave a mark...
[17:38] * Michael turns the cat and considers.. then simply ties it up in the sheets of the bed, and pulls out another another scroll as he heads down the stairs as silently as he can..
[17:39] <Ebiris> As Michael ties up the bloodied familiar, he can hear further footsteps coming up the stairs! "Dammit, Jurgen, what are you playing at up there?"
[17:39] * Michael rolls under the bed again, clutching his scroll, ready once more..
[17:43] <Ebiris> "Urgh, be careful," the familiar voice of the wizard is also heard. "He did something to Farmentus." In short order, another two sets of feet are seen coming into the bedroom, one voice crying out, "Jurgen! By Torm, what happened!"
[17:43] * Michael once again releases the spell within the scroll.
[17:44] <Michael> roll d20+9
[17:44] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+9 and gets 17." [d20=8]
[17:46] <Ebiris> The scroll dissolves in Michael's hand, the magic fizzling! "Under the bed!" the guard's voice yells furiously!
[17:46] <Ebiris> OOC: init
[17:46] <Michael> roll d20+4
[17:46] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+4 and gets 24." [d20=20]
[17:46] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+5 guard
[17:46] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+5 guard and gets 21." [1d20=16]
[17:46] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+3 Wizard
[17:46] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+3 Wizard and gets 9." [1d20=6]
[17:47] <Ebiris> OOC: your go
[17:48] * Michael rolls out from under the bed and focuses on the guard, and draws his blades..
[17:48] <Michael> OOC: Declaring the guard for my Dodge.
[17:49] <Ebiris> "Have at you, villian!" the guard cries, drawing his blade and stabbing out at Michael!
[17:49] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+5
[17:49] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+5 and gets 8." [1d20=3]
[17:49] <Ebiris> But misses by a mile, his sword failing to even touch Michael!
[17:50] <Ebiris> "It would have been better to surrender, for I am all out of non-lethal spells!" the wizard declares, his hand suddenly flashing with sparks as he reaches for the thief!
[17:50] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+5
[17:50] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+5 and gets 6." [1d20=1]
[17:51] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+5 critfail lol
[17:51] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+5 critfail lol and gets 12." [1d20=7]
[17:51] <Ebiris> OOC: touch AC?
[17:51] <Michael> OOC: No idea.
[17:51] <Ebiris> OOC: work it out!
[17:51] <Ebiris> OOC: 10 + dex mod
[17:51] <Michael> OOC: 14.
[17:53] <Ebiris> roll 1d100
[17:53] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d100 and gets 12." [1d100=12]
[17:53] <Ebiris> OOC: you can make a trip attack against him - make a melee touch attack if you want
[17:54] <Michael> OOC: Sure, but I dunno the rules for that.
[17:55] <Ebiris> OOC: 1d20 plus bab plus strength. If you hit then you make opposed strength/dex checks. If you win he falls over.
[17:55] * Michael swings his foot out at the mage's leg with a nasty grin.
[17:56] <Michael> roll d20+8
[17:56] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 and gets 25." [d20=17]
[17:56] <Ebiris> OOC: hit, roll either 1d20 + strength or 1d20 + dex. Whichever is better.
[17:56] <Michael> roll d20+4
[17:56] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+4 and gets 14." [d20=10]
[17:57] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+3
[17:57] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+3 and gets 15." [1d20=12]
[17:57] <Ebiris> Despite his horribly misaimed lung, the wizard just barely manages to avoid being tripped by hopping over Michael's outstretched leg!
[17:57] <Ebiris> OOC: your go
[17:58] * Michael swings at the mage, forgoing his previous efforts to not kill the man..
[17:58] <Michael> roll d20+8 swing 1
[17:58] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 swing 1 and gets 28." [d20=20]
[17:58] <Michael> roll d20+8 swing 2
[17:58] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 swing 2 and gets 21." [d20=13]
[17:58] <Michael> roll d20+8 crit confirm
[17:58] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 crit confirm and gets 12." [d20=4]
[17:59] <Ebiris> OOC: 2 regular hits
[17:59] <Michael> roll d6+4 swing 1
[17:59] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d6+4 swing 1 and gets 10." [d6=6]
[17:59] <Michael> roll d6+4 swing 2
[17:59] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d6+4 swing 2 and gets 5." [d6=1]
[18:00] <Ebiris> This time the wound is assuredly fatal, Michael first cutting a wide gash through the wizard's chest, before plunging his sword right through his stomach! The wizard gasps, choking up blood as his eyes roll back, white and unseeing as his lifeless form collapses.
[18:00] <Ebiris> "Murderer!" the brave knight rages furiously, striking again at Michael for all that is just in the world!
[18:00] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+5
[18:00] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+5 and gets 14." [1d20=9]
[18:01] <Ebiris> But he finds himself unable to pierce the wily rogue's guard at all!

Ebiris

Loot for exciting wizard robbery:

6 undetermined scrolls

Ebiris

[15:05] * Michael flashes his blades out, viciously swinging at the guard
[15:05] <Michael> roll d20+8 swing 1
[15:05] <Michael> roll d20+8 swing 2
[15:05] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 swing 1 and gets 17." [d20=9]
[15:05] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+8 swing 2 and gets 10." [d20=2]
[15:06] <Ebiris> But the guard is able to parry both blades aside, pressed hard by the vicious assault! Rallying himself, he strikes back with a straight thrust, trying to run this dangerous criminal through!
[15:06] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+5
[15:06] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+5 and gets 8." [1d20=3]
[15:06] <Ebiris> But it's a clean miss, the blade passing wide of Michael!
[15:08] * Michael grins at the guard and suddenly rushes him, diving into a roll to get past him!
[15:08] <Michael> roll d20+14
[15:08] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+14 and gets 24." [d20=10]
[15:10] <Ebiris> Michael gets past the guard without leaving himself open, reaching the exit of the bedroom!
[15:10] <Ebiris> OOC: You still have some movement or an action left if you want
[15:11] * Michael rolls back to his feet and takes off down the stairs, sheathing one of his blades as he goes..
[15:12] <Ebiris> OOC: running or just walking down the stairs?
[15:13] <Michael> OOC: Running.
[15:14] <Ebiris> OOC: balance check, then
[15:15] <Michael> roll d20+4
[15:15] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+4 and gets 11." [d20=7]
[15:16] <Ebiris> Michael is able to rush down the stairs without incident, but the brave knight rushes after, hot on his heels!
[15:16] <Ebiris> roll 1d20-3
[15:16] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20-3 and gets 6." [1d20=9]
[15:17] <Ebiris> But he stumbles a bit on the stairs, the gap between them increasing! Down in the shop front you can see it currently empty, but who knows how long till more guards appear?
[15:18] * Michael continues to bolt, full speed, and takes a right out of the front door..
[15:19] <Ebiris> Michael reaches the door, his left heading towards the well lit street, while his right heads deeper down the twisting alleyway...
[15:20] * Michael continues down into the alleyway, looking for twists and turns to lose the guard, as well as hiding places..
[15:21] <Ebiris> The alley isn't as dark as before - a few lights have been turned on and people are looking out windows - there's even one old man leaning out of an open doorway about forty feet further down, staring in slack jawed amazement at the spectacle.
[15:23] * Michael continues down the alley, continuing to put distance between himself and the guard, waiting for a twist or turn he can use as cover to find a hiding place.
[15:26] <Ebiris> The alley winds to the left after about sixty feet - you can hear the armoured footsteps of the guard rushing behind you, but he's slower than you are.
[15:26] * Michael takes the turn and ducks into the first hiding place he can find, pulling out a tanglefoot bag as he waits..
[15:30] <Ebiris> The alley's a bit darker here, widening out a bit and the sides holding some stacked up refuse. This must be the part of Silverymoon the tourists don't see...
[15:30] <Ebiris> OOC: hide check
[15:30] <Michael> roll d20+14
[15:30] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+14 and gets 19." [d20=5]
[15:33] <Ebiris> After a moment, the guard is seen rushing around into this part of the alley!
[15:33] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[15:33] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 18." [1d20=18]
[15:34] <Ebiris> His eyes almost immediately lock onto Michael, however, no chance for surprise given!
[15:34] <Ebiris> OOC: init
[15:34] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+5
[15:34] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+5 and gets 22." [1d20=17]
[15:34] <Michael> roll d20+4
[15:34] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+4 and gets 15." [d20=11]
[15:36] <Ebiris> The knight levels his weapon at Michael, "Surrender peacefully or suffer the consequences, knave!" he bellows imperiously.
[15:36] <Ebiris> OOC: your go
[15:37] * Michael bows theatrically to the guard, and throws the tanglefoot bag at him as he rises.
[15:37] <Michael> roll d20+9
[15:37] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+9 and gets 23." [d20=14]
[15:38] <Ebiris> roll 1d20+1
[15:38] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20+1 and gets 3." [1d20=2]
[15:39] <Ebiris> "Gah!" the knight cries out as he's coated in the thick goo, suddenly unable to move!
[15:39] * Michael salutes the guard with a single finger and turns on his heel, continuing his escape.
[15:41] <Ebiris> Michael finds no one interfering with him as he runs down the twisting alleys, the infuriated shouting of the guard growing more and more dim as he runs before finally seeing an opening onto the street proper ahead.
[15:42] * Michael pauses momentarily to take off his mask and store it away, along with the other tools of his trade, before calmly strolling onto the street and heading back to his room, to look over the scrolls he managed to make off with..
[15:46] <Ebiris> Michael attracts no undue attention as he makes his way back to his room at the inn, able to peruse his scrolls at leisure. Opening up the first one, he begins to read when...
[15:46] <Ebiris> OOC: reflex save
[15:46] <Michael> roll d20+9
[15:46] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+9 and gets 20." [d20=11]
[15:48] <Ebiris> Yikes! It was only through his cat-like reflexes that Michael ducked at the right moment as the scroll suddenly exploded violently where his face just was! That probably woke up everyone in the inn, but at least you're healthy?
[15:48] * Michael scratches his jaw and waves the air clear...
[15:49] <Michael> "Hmm.. Need to not do that again, I suppose.. Gotta find someone who can fiddle with these.."
[15:50] * Michael sits back and decides to try and make contact with the local Thieve's Guild, but worries about doing so..
[15:51] <Ebiris> There's a banging on the wall as well as a muffled yell of "People are trying to sleep!" But also the sound of footsteps running down the hall before the innkeeper bursts in! "What in Baator is going on in here?!" the portly old man bellows.
[15:52] <Michael> "Sorry, sorry, Master Inkeeper. I was trying to improve upon one of my scrolls, and sadly, made a mistake. It was unexpected, but, truely, I have learned my lesson."
[15:54] <Ebiris> "You bloody well better!" the innkeeper fumes. "Do you know what time of night it is? Respectable people are trying to sleep - this is an inn, not some demented wizard's tower!"
[15:55] <Michael> "Ah, I am aware, Sir. It was to be a simple, and minor change, but I fear lack of sleep has gotten to me. I shall retire for the night, as the rest of your customers are surely trying to do."
[15:57] <Ebiris> "Bloody well better..." the innkeep glowers, retreating back out the room and closing the door, leaving Michael to his privacy.
[15:58] * Michael grunts to himself and decides to follow through, laying down for a few hours of rest before setting out on his search..
[15:58] <Ebiris> OOC: Okay, so what are you planning, now?
[15:59] <Michael> OOC: Try to make contact with the thieve's guild or find some form of underground fighting ring..
[16:00] <Ebiris> OOC: those are two things, so in which order would you do them?
[16:01] <Michael> OOC: Guild first.
[16:02] <Ebiris> OOC: gather info check
[16:02] <Michael> roll d20-1
[16:02] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20-1 and gets 5." [d20=6]
[16:02] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[16:03] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 12." [1d20=12]
[16:03] <Ebiris> Michael makes a few circumspect enquiries the following day, but can't find any solid leads - few people are even willing to acknowledge the possibility that such a guild even exists in Silverymoon.
[16:04] * Michael decides to put further inquiries to the backburner, as he does not wish to draw too much attention, and instead begins looking for a fighting ring..
[16:05] <Ebiris> OOC: gather info check the second
[16:05] <Michael> roll d20-1
[16:05] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20-1 and gets 0." [d20=1]
[16:06] <Ebiris> Fighting ring? Nobody knows anything about that. Someone suggests you sign up with the town guard if you're looking for action.
[16:06] * Michael decides to move to a diffrent part of town and again look for the fighting ring..
[16:06] <Michael> roll d20-1
[16:06] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20-1 and gets 10." [d20=11]
[16:08] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[16:08] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 20." [1d20=20]
[16:10] <Ebiris> Despite a lot of legwork, Michael isn't seeming to have much luck. Or perhaps luck of the wrong sort... As he's leaving one tavern, he notices a passing Knight in Silver happens to be looking at him very intently.
[16:11] * Michael ignores the Knight and begins wandering around the city, keeping an eye out for the Knight..
[16:14] <Ebiris> Well, that's not hard. He makes a beeline for you pretty quickly. "Excuse me, sir, might I have a moment?" he asks. His tone is respectful, but you can see a hand is by his weapon.
[16:23] <Ebiris> Well, that's not hard. He makes a beeline for you pretty quickly. "Excuse me, sir, might I have a moment?" he asks. His tone is respectful, but you can see a hand is by his weapon.
[16:24] <Michael> "Oh? Certianly, Lord Knight. Shall we talk over a meal?"
[16:27] <Ebiris> "Just come with me, sir," the knight replies, his grey-bearded face showing scant amusement.
[16:27] * Michael nods and follows him..
[16:32] <Ebiris> You're swiftly joined by another knight and led to a guard post off the merchant district. Neither of them provides any conversation as you're directed into the building, though the lead knight greets a powerfully built but unarmoured man at a desk in the front, "We've brought a suspect in for questioning regarding the disturbance at Maugrim's Enchanted Panopoly last night, sir."
[16:32] * Michael raises an eyebrow.
[16:32] <Michael> "Suspect?"
[16:36] <Ebiris> "Your description matches the one of someone seen at the scene," the knight who brought you in explains. "Now please hand over your weapons before we take you to a questioning room - if you have done nothing wrong, they will be returned to you after we are done."
[16:37] * Michael stares at the man for a few seconds and then shrugs with a grin.
[16:37] <Michael> "Let's make this quick, shall we? I'm sure we both have plenty of things to do."
[16:37] * Michael hands over his blades..
[16:39] <Ebiris> The blades are then handed over to the man at the desk, and you're led further into the building and into a small room off the corridor. There are no windows here, only torchlight providing illumination. "Please wait in here. Your interviewer will be here shortly."
[16:39] <Michael> "Certianly."
[16:40] <Ebiris> There's a table and a couple of wooden chairs, but otherwise it's pretty spartan. One of the knights remains by the door, watching you distrustfully while the other goes away.
[16:41] * Michael sits down and waits paitently.
[16:43] <Ebiris> You're kept waiting for maybe an hour before someone arrives, this man somewhat thin and balding. A pair of spectacles rests on his button-like nose as he sits himself down opposite you and sets a scroll down on the table along with an inkwell. "I presume constable Withers here explained why we've asked you in for a few questions, hmm?" he asks, beady eyes looking up at Michael.
[16:44] <Michael> "Vaugely. Something about trouble in a shop last night?"
[16:45] <Ebiris> "Mmmhmm," the man nods, dipping a quill into his inkwell. "Well, to start off with, might I have your name, please?"
[16:46] <Michael> "Michae Ciaran, sir? Might I have yours?"
[16:49] <Ebiris> "Inspector Dettins will do," he replies, scribbling on the parchment. "And where do you live, Mir Ciaran?"
[16:50] <Ebiris> *Mr
[16:52] <Michael> "Currently I'm staying in one of your town's inns... The Wayward House, I believe."
[16:54] <Ebiris> "Ah, a visitor," he nods, writing down more. "And how long have you been staying in our fair city, Mr Ciaran?"
[16:55] <Michael> "Oh, just around a week or so, Inspector. And, though off subject, let me compliment your city. It is, indeed, a beautiful city. I'm quite enjoying my stay."
[16:58] <Ebiris> "We are very proud of it, and of course strive to keep it safe for visitors and residents alike, so I'm sure you understand why we must go through these procedures," the weaselly looking man smiles. "So what business brought you here? Just seeing the sights or something more?"
[17:05] <Michael> "A little of both, actually. I'm from Waterdeep, originally, and I left to 'make my way in the world,' so to speak. Adventure, gold, the usual. While out, I figured I'd sort of turn the whole thing into a sight-seeing trip, if you get my meaning. And, with your city's reputation for it's beauty, I couldn't very well pass it up. I've been wanting to visit the Moonbridge, but have yet to make my way there.. Beyond that, I simply want to
[17:08] <Michael>  I've been wanting to visit the Moonbridge, but have yet to make my way there.. Beyond that, I simply want to take a respite from the road until I find a suitible group of people to travel with."
[17:08] <Ebiris> OOC: bluff check
[17:09] <Michael> roll d20+9
[17:09] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+9 and gets 14." [d20=5]
[17:09] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[17:09] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 10." [1d20=10]
[17:09] <Ebiris> "I see," Dettins purses his lips a moment. "Well, now to the heart of the matter. Where were you last night, between dusk and midnight?"
[17:12] <Michael> "Ahh, the meat and potatoes, so to speak. Indeed. I had taken leave of my room, shortly before dusk, to have a meal. I decided to simply buy something from one of the local vendors, a wonderful bird, and returned to my room with it. I then secluded myself inside and began working with one of my scrolls."
[17:13] <Ebiris> OOC: bluff check again
[17:13] <Michael> "I continued my work, until sometime early in the morning, when I made a... mistake.. It resulted in a small, rather loud, explosion.."
[17:13] <Michael> roll d20+9
[17:13] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+9 and gets 25." [d20=16]
[17:13] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[17:13] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 8." [1d20=8]
[17:14] <Ebiris> "Secluded in your room, eh? So there's no one who can verify this?" Dettins asks thoughtfully as he scribbles down a bit more.
[17:15] <Michael> "Mmm.. Unless the inkeep took note of my return, such is doubtful, Inspector. And I believe he was most occupied with his business. Though, I can assure you, you can most easily verify my.. mishap. The Master Inkeeper was rather.. unhappy.. I caused such a ruckus."
[17:18] <Michael> "I regularly seclude myself at nights.. Being from Waterdeep, it is a.. Safety precaution, so to speak."
[17:20] <Ebiris> "Yes, perhaps we will," the inspector murmurs thoughtfully. "Back to these scrolls you mentioned, are you a student of the arcane?"
[17:22] <Michael> "Ah, about that.. It is a passing fancy for me. I have interest in it, but no talent. I merely.. Well, 'play around' is a poor choice of words.. One does not 'play' with magic unless they are insane, but there you have it.. I stick to merely testing what mundane, simple magic, I can find, and go no further."
[17:23] <Michael> "Had Mystra wished me to be magely, she would have blessed me. As she did not, I merely resign myself to 'looking in' upon her wonders. I dare not tred her path foolishly."
[17:24] <Ebiris> "I see, I see," he nods, scribbling down a bit more. "You probably know then, that Silverymoon has a strong magical tradition. Have you purchased any artifacts in your stay here?"
[17:27] <Michael> "While here, I have yet to. I have, however, been searching for an endowed cloak and boots.. But, I have to find what I'm looking for. Sadly, I really and truely lack any ability with magic, so I've been.. tenative.. in my searching. I've noted a few places that seem to do well with business, but alas.. I'm wary of being had, Inspector.."
[17:32] <Ebiris> "Yes, understandable," Dettins smiles thinly. "Well, I believe I have enough for my report." He stands up, "If you'll wait here a bit longer, we have a witness from the disturbance, so need to see if your resemblance is as strong as Constable Withers thought when he saw you on the street."
[17:33] <Michael> "Oh, certianly."
[17:37] <Ebiris> Dettins leaves, Michael left with his unspeaking guard for the moment... until the knight you fought last night strides into the room.
[17:38] <Michael> "Good eve, Sir Knight. Will you be escorting me to the witness?"
[17:39] <Ebiris> roll 1d20
[17:39] * Hatbot --> "Ebiris rolls 1d20 and gets 11." [1d20=11]
[17:43] <Ebiris> The armoured man snorts, glaring contemptously down at Michael. "I'd cut you down where you stand if I could, murderer. But I suppose I can settle for seeing you rot in jail instead."
[17:43] <Michael> "Sir?"
[17:47] <Ebiris> "Feh, don't play dumb. You're wearing the exact same armour you wore last night. And that little mask wasn't much of a disguise," the knight replies scathingly. "You're going to be put away for a long time."
[17:47] <Ebiris> And with that, he turns to leave, another knight soon entering, this one carrying a set of manacles. "Stand up," he instructs.
[17:48] <Michael> "I am to be arrested for wearing armor?"
[17:49] <Ebiris> "You're under arrest for the murder of Maugrim Teodus," the knight who just entered replies, looking at Michael with disgust. "Now stand up."
[17:53] * Michael slips his sap and thieve's tools into hiding, using the table to cover the movements, just before he stands..
[17:53] <Michael> roll d20+14
[17:53] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+14 and gets 26." [d20=12]
[17:53] <Michael> roll d20+14
[17:53] * Hatbot --> "Michael rolls d20+14 and gets 22." [d20=8]
[17:59] <Ebiris> The manacles are promptly placed on - they're high quality ones, securing Michael's hands and feet, preventing more than little steps. "You will be taken to a holding cell pending your trial," the knight intones boredly, leading you out the room. "A legal advisor will visit you in the morning."
[18:01] * Michael nods and offers his hands.
