Because getting feedback and spurring discussion is good.

Since we have some free time, I'd like to ask some questions. I'm mixing these up from the last few times.

World and NPCs.

1. As you gather prestige and become important parts of Balmuria and the Baronies, what do you think about gathering followers? What do you think about the roots and situations you're setting up?

2. Seira is starting a magical school. Demedais is scouting out training would be paladins. Alicia is pondering a temple to Mystra. How much do these aspects interest you, IC and OOC?

3.  Drana. What do you think of this, IC and OOC. Also, aside from that, how would you take this sort of situation as a GM? Honest curosity here, since I've seen the gamut of responses ran from people I've discussed it with.

4. Are there any NPCs you'd rather see eliminated? I usually have a lot on my plate, so if there's someone you guys don't like, I can work on them. Within reason, of course.

5. We're starting to have an idea of how the world is. Balmuria and the Baronies are still the center, with the vast Malmuthian Empire to the south. To the west is the Desert Fiefdoms, and far away is a great land of frost and ice. To the northeast are the elves, and far below the dwarves await. What parts work for you? Are there any parts that beg for more attention?

6. What's the favorite magical item you've seen in game? Why?

7. The trip to the court of Lord Stargazer was something of an experiment. What did you think of it, both in broad and narrow ranges?

8. It's been noted that you see more of the bad outsiders(Demons, summoned devils, ect) than good outsiders, and even then not in beneficial roles. Does this bother you? Distinguish IC and OOC if needed.

9. Are there any new house rules you'd suggest? I'm about to add a ruling I've been using(Check the rules topic), any other ideas while we're at it?

10. I've been starting to work with the time we have and shifting the game format to something more suitable of biweekly gaming. How's that going so far? Noticing any differences?

11. Sometimes I'll run something with Seira or Alicia during the week to offset our timing issues. Does this bother the rest of you at all if you're sitting around while someone else is gaming?

World and NPCs.

1. As you gather prestige and become important parts of Balmuria and the Baronies, what do you think about gathering followers? What do you think about the roots and situations you're setting up?

I like it as long as it's something worked on and not 'roll two dice, get x followers to be cannon fodder'. It's something the party's slowly done throughout; Donald, Pollyanna, Drana(?) and so on, not to mention friends made in the city. I like how the party's become a part of the city and it's something I'm trying to reflect more on. Seira's a landowner who's a local hero, Demedais is a shining exemplar of his faith, Alicia's a stern but just warrioress in the service of the guard.

2. Seira is starting a magical school. Demedais is scouting out training would be paladins. Alicia is pondering a temple to Mystra. How much do these aspects interest you, IC and OOC?

Fairly. All of these are the players interacting with the world and things I'd like to advance. Sometimes these things fall to 'only so many hours in the day' syndrome, but I am interested in them.

3.  Drana. What do you think of this, IC and OOC. Also, aside from that, how would you take this sort of situation as a GM? Honest curosity here, since I've seen the gamut of responses ran from people I've discussed it with.

No IC from me, unless you want to see the evil GM laughing.

I...mmm. I'd pencilled in Drana doing that as a last resort, since she was in the position she was in because she was desperate. I put it on 50/50 odds of her getting gibbed before it mattered. After all, she was the big, shining target while the gold dragon ran amok.  But since it didn't, I figured it anyone would get her, it would be Seira. Her nature and spells gave her the best chance of doing so and also the best chance of not dismissing Drana's offer out of hand.  Plus, with a level of bard an Erinyes would make an awesome bard. Of course, Alicia took it and...

Eh. I think Mystra's stance is clear enough; she's trusting her paladin on this. Drana's not dragon fried fritters now, so that says quite a bit. I'm perfectly willing to see where Alicia takes this, even if it's to her own damnation. Beyond that I do have to keep my own council, but Alicia treads one dangerous, rocky path towards the peak.

4. Are there any NPCs you'd rather see eliminated? I usually have a lot on my plate, so if there's someone you guys don't like, I can work on them. Within reason, of course.

Yeah, I have to be a bit circumspect here. But still, an occasional cleanup of faces is a good thing. If for no other reason than to save GM brain cells. Like for example, I think I(And everyone else, to be fair) forgot Donald was with Deme and Seira's trip this weekend. Bringing him along would've probably made that encounter easier. But anyway!

Al-Lamar. His plot ends and desires never synced up for various reasons. (Ask me about this when Balmuria finishes if he never catches.)

Past that? If there's something I felt never really worked, I'm in a position to wiggle out of them. Polly's former group was partially a case of this. I'm not sure if I should say Khardon here, my head's a complete mess on that mark. He was built around Lyselle, and when she bailed it made things complicated. (Sparing details for now.)

The Desert. I suspect you'll end up there sooner or later anyway and I've dropped hints on occasion. Shush about that NPCs I accidentally spoiled you on, Cor. <_< Malmuth and the elves are playing out at a nice pace. The rest of the Baronies aren't overly developed, but since Balmuria's the focus I don't overly mind this.

6. What's the favorite magical item you've seen in game? Why?

Pass.

7. The trip to the court of Lord Stargazer was something of an experiment. What did you think of it, both in broad and narrow ranges?

I had a lot of fun running it, the start was a bait and switch and it went well from there. It seemed to give the PCs a lot of grist to chew on.

8. It's been noted that you see more of the bad outsiders(Demons, summoned devils, ect) than good outsiders, and even then not in beneficial roles. Does this bother you? Distinguish IC and OOC if needed.

This comes from three sources:

1. Evil outsiders make great opposition and the plot was tailored for devils to be more common than the scenario would suggest. I think they're a bit played out for now, though.

2. Good outsiders have this nasty problem of being overpowered unless you build celestial template mortals or aasimar with class levels to sub in. Having an angel flying around early on with tons of heals wouldn't fit at all.

3. At the end of the day, it's a lot more fun to have the mortals deal with things instead of sending outsiders to mop up. Makes far better D and D. Kinda like how Doom would be a lot more boring if hordes of angels came to the Mars Moon base when the gates went to hell. Easier, but boring. <_<

As for what I think of it? Eh. I'll hold my tongue beyond that, I want to see how you guys react.

9. Are there any new house rules you'd suggest? I'm about to add a ruling I've been using(Check the rules topic), any other ideas while we're at it?

Nothing overly pressing at the moment. Not really a question for myself anyway.

El passo.

11. Sometimes I'll run something with Seira or Alicia during the week to offset our timing issues. Does this bother the rest of you at all if you're sitting around while someone else is gaming?

I dunno. I do worry about this sometimes when one of you is killing time while another's doing something life or death. I don't want any of you feeling neglected or anything. If this isn't anything sane, feel free to tell me.

1) Followers are cool as long as PCs remain cooler, one-on-one. As long as that remains, the more, the merrier!

2) Badgering people until they finally funded my school pretty much answers that one. Seira doesn't really care about temples and paladins much IC, but would help if asked.

3) Seira cares even less for Drana and probably wouldn't help if asked. Other than that, my opinion is probably pretty clear, IC, OOC and anything in between.

4) Let's kill Irenes by catching him in a place he can't teleport from. Or, barring that, find a more insulting name to call him than unibrow freak. Maybe he'll be upset enough to not run away at the first feeble spell sent his way, then. I wish I could get away with killing Khardon, too, but I'd be happy to loot him and let him fade away into obscurity if the chance arises. We must have a version of a distant Alaskan outpost that needs to be manned.

5) The part with the dwarves might've jumped the shark! It's hard to say, when even NPCs comment that this city has everything. Anyway, since no one hates us and we now think it was all a red herring, I want to take my belated trip to the deserts. The elves, Helm clerics or Elle can use Sending or something to call us back, and with a Teleport, there we are, ready to defend!

6) The bow resort/ring resort, whichever works best for Seira, naturally. But the hammer has to be the funniest one, especially with its applications. Even hardened devils pause when they catch sight of it!

7) If our nobles are such retards they are lucky they still draw breath. Other than that, here's to hoping we see them again. Lots of magical knowledge surely awaits us, ready to be shared.

8) Of course it bothers me! For all them being so high and mighty I think we've yet to see them actually deserve any of that. Sure, they've granted us some perks, but it was all on the level of things we got from the other side, and even from _our sworn enemy himself_. But, then again, evil is kinda stupid in its dealings with us, so I guess it evens out. The outsiderly evil, I mean, the mortal variety works well.

9) Not particularly. I'd love to have a Rule of Cool but this IS D&D, so it might not be all that feasible....

10) Too early to tell, unless the format was what decided the attacks on us by our named enemies.

11) It'd be pro to let us know in advance when we'll have to be on call, I'd say. We'll probably be around anyway, to observe and all that, but it'd help.

12) Did you purposely had Irenes go after us since Alicia got to deal with Febras? I don't think we need an equalizer like that, especially if it was artificially added. That I can't tell the intent probably isn't a good sign, but I'm curious enough to ask.

Comments on your post, Dune~

You know my distrust of devils and not feeling like bothering with them, I said as much before. Don't think this gets you out of Seira's BardQuest!

Re: angels, you know, if nothing else, they can just show up in cheerleading outfits and... cheer us on. Having more divine involvement doesn't mean we get heals on request, but that your deity returns your calls once in a while. Or sends you helpful loot to sell and fund follower weapons. Actually, it'd be pretty amusing and useful if they gifted our flunkies with stuff we can't sell since it'd offend the gals upstairs, and weren't useful enough for _us_ to just borrow indefinitely.

Quoting Seira, "Followers are cool as long as PCs remain cooler, one-on-one. As long as that remains, the more, the merrier!"
Quote
2. Seira is starting a magical school. Demedais is scouting out training would be paladins. Alicia is pondering a temple to Mystra. How much do these aspects interest you, IC and OOC?

IC/OOC: Fairly interested, Deme wouldn't mind working with Seira on her school if there was anything he could do to help (someone's gotta be a voice of sanity to drown her out) and may ask Seira for assistance with the paladin training if he can think of anything he can't cover himself there. Needs a bit more time, but yeah, we've been busy with MALMUTHIAN DRAMA WHORES and DEVIL SWARMS. Not that either of these things are bad! ^_^

3.  Drana. What do you think of this, IC and OOC. Also, aside from that, how would you take this sort of situation as a GM? Honest curosity here, since I've seen the gamut of responses ran from people I've discussed it with.

IC? Well, at the last point Deme knew of what was going on, he was... willing to bear with the situation, but wouldn't hesitate to kill her if he felt it necessary/considered her as stepping out of line. He's distancing himself as much as possible from the situation as well - if Alicia really wants to try, his antagonistic presence won't help one bit. OOC? Amusing, rather surprising and... yeah. Okay sure.

How would I handle it? Um. Probably a bit differently, though I can't really say how?

4. Are there any NPCs you'd rather see eliminated? I usually have a lot on my plate, so if there's someone you guys don't like, I can work on them. Within reason, of course.

Lord Almond. <_< Truth be told, I'm fine with everyone that I can currently think of - little cameos from people as they begin to merge into the background is fine, not sure what to tell you, yadda dadda.

For now, the situation's sensible; IC, Deme's not terribly interested in actions not directly related to preparing to take down Daa-vid, since that seems to be Helm's primary objective. Secondary objective is ensuring Balmuria prospers. Third is having fun exploring, which ties into 2 and 1 to a lesser extent.

OOC... uh, no clue. I am as a leaf on a river.

Liked it. Deme's now got even more motivation to slit Daa-vid's throat!

OOC: ...yeah, kinda, although it was suggested that Good outsiders didn't know that the Evil ones were running amok more in the mortal world, so it's understandable a bit. However, since then I'd expect it to tone down (The pit fiend fucking around down there didn't help much, but it still feels like there were more than anticipated). Either that or we begin to see Good assist in the bigger messes, I dunno, whatevs.

IC, it's not one of the topic Deme thinks about. They're like evil rats; to be exterminated when they become a pest.

1. As you gather prestige and become important parts of Balmuria and the Baronies, what do you think about gathering followers? What do you think about the roots and situations you're setting up?

It's nice to feel like a part of the world and not some wandering monster killer. Alicia's a bit behind on this stuff partly due to her late arrival and partly due to her personality, but with the clear importance of Balmuria she's starting to settle in for the long haul. Still, she's not really connected with any of the local NPCs very strongly - she kinda likes Obureth and Elle, but it's not much more than friendliness. Oddly, the two people Alicia is most invested in are also the most evil and hateful members of the cast. She might not like Beth and Antenora, but she can't afford to ignore them.

As far as followers go, having a couple of middling level dudes is way more useful than a horde of mooks, as the Febras fight proved. Admittedly Antenora will probably be lagging way behind us by the time she finally comes around (if ever), but she'd prove a useful sidekick even up to level 20 thanks to her numerous abilities besides simply hitting stuff. Level 1 warriors just aren't good for anything. More quality, less quantity, basically.

2. Seira is starting a magical school. Demedais is scouting out training would be paladins. Alicia is pondering a temple to Mystra. How much do these aspects interest you, IC and OOC?

To be honest, the temple thing is sort of a 'keeping up with the Jonses' deal. Since Seira and Deme have their side projects, I feel like I should have one, too. Really, Alicia doesn't have time to run a temple - she could probably give a sermon or two a week, but she can hardly compete with the sort of service offered by the temples of Helm and Waukeen. It's more likely that she'll just take the role of benefactor and occassional guest cleric by founding the temple and giving the odd sermon here and there, while actual priests run it and provide temple services. Once she learns teleport she'll scoot over to Kelara and Pallanth to recruit a few, I suppose. Or maybe it's a 'if you build it, they will come...' dealie. Either way, not something I'm overly concerned about right now.

3.  Drana. What do you think of this, IC and OOC. Also, aside from that, how would you take this sort of situation as a GM? Honest curosity here, since I've seen the gamut of responses ran from people I've discussed it with.

IC it's a huge risk that makes Alicia worry she's gotten in over her head, but she's not willing to back down - if Drana makes a clear betryal, she'll get put down, but otherwise she's going to be tolerated for as long as it takes for her to either slip up and become good, or slip up and exhaust Alicia's goodwill.

OOC it's an awesome roleplaying hook, and while naturally I don't want Alicia to fall, I think it should be a fun ride either way, and I want to see how it plays out.

GM side, eh, I'm reluctant to go into detail here for risk of making you change stuff just to keep me surprised, but since you did ask... It's important for Drana to take a long term view. She's an immortal being of evil with a near genius level intellect and exceedingly high persuasive skills. Having her just jump up and kill someone then run off would be unsatisfying from a narrative standpoint, and doesn't do justice to her mindset. She has an opportunity here that many devils would quite literally kill for - she has the ear of a paladin, and those souls are by far the sweetest to make fall. Damning Alicia would pretty much guarantee her promotion no matter what happens.

So, I'd play it by having her be unfailingly helpful - make Alicia appreciate her presence and advice, perhaps even come to rely on her. Of course, her advice will frequently steer towards the lawful evil, but that doesn't necessarily make it bad advice. She should do everything in her power to chip away at Alicia's morals while reinforcing her lawfulness, encouraging her wherever possible to adopt a strict and perhaps vicious line in enforcing order, and praising her whenever she carries out actions that agree with such a mindset. As a pertinent example, after the Febras fight, had Alicia refused to allow Drana to fight, she could reasonably point out that her decision cost the lives of any who died there, which makes 'Good' seem high handed and above the lives of mere mortals. Since Alicia did accept the devil's help, it gives ample opening to point out how well they can work together, and how efficient they can be in doing what's important when moral principles are discarded.

Of course, that's not to say she's irredeemable. Just that as hard as Alicia tries to pull her one way, she'll be trying just as hard to pull Alicia in the other direction, and with her direction being downhill, it makes her chances of success seem much higher.

It's a far more satisfying story when Good triumphs against the odds, after all.

4. Are there any NPCs you'd rather see eliminated? I usually have a lot on my plate, so if there's someone you guys don't like, I can work on them. Within reason, of course.

The only NPCs I want eliminated will meet said elimination at the point of Alicia's sword. Febras was merely the start.

I'd like to visit the desert fiefdoms and the land of snow and ice. Bonus nautical adventure to get to the latter. MIxing up the terrain types is fun, and also leads to encountering diverse and fun new fauna. And killing it.

6. What's the favorite magical item you've seen in game? Why?

Frozen Oath. I made it myself, so bonus points for that, and it really was a pretty pro item. It's really unique and not the sort of thing you'd normally just by from a shop, which reinforces its artifact status.

7. The trip to the court of Lord Stargazer was something of an experiment. What did you think of it, both in broad and narrow ranges?

I hope we don't interact with that world again. It's an unneeded layer of complication, and has too much potential to seriously imbalance our own world. Interesting one-off trip, but it doesn't fit the established setting for us to jaunt over to magic rich Earth-2 with any regularity.

8. It's been noted that you see more of the bad outsiders(Demons, summoned devils, ect) than good outsiders, and even then not in beneficial roles. Does this bother you? Distinguish IC and OOC if needed.

IC Alicia doesn't mind. She'd rather see less fiends than more celestials to balance things out. She's happy for mortals to make their own destiny with a little discreet prodding from the Gods rather than being reduced to fodder in vast battles between heavenly hosts and hellish armies.

OOC I don't really mind. It's a standard in storytelling that Evil works a lot harder than Good, and it's up to mortals to pick up the slack.

9. Are there any new house rules you'd suggest? I'm about to add a ruling I've been using(Check the rules topic), any other ideas while we're at it?

Not really.

10. I've been starting to work with the time we have and shifting the game format to something more suitable of biweekly gaming. How's that going so far? Noticing any differences?

Things seem a bit more focused now, as we try to fit in as much as possible in the limited time. Probably for the best, so we can get as much bang for our buck, so to speak.

11. Sometimes I'll run something with Seira or Alicia during the week to offset our timing issues. Does this bother the rest of you at all if you're sitting around while someone else is gaming?

Not really.

Yes, because bad guy wizards should stick around after taking damage and not retreat. <_<

Khardon has the bad luck of being notable to the overreaching plot and having become something of a loose end. The people he's had good chemistry with have a bad way of being both blonde and gone/dead.

I do like the idea of a super specialized artifact that hoses one small subset. It lets me give you something potent without being broken. The chemistry it has in party(Two lawful paladins) does limit it's use, though. As an aside, Seira carrying it around was rather hilarious if off kilter.

The first sentiment is not without merit. As for the second? It's an interesting direction to have open, but I agree with it not becoming a big part or regular at all. 'sides, there are enough embers on the plate now and Stargazer's court did more than it needed to.

Yeah, the Febras fight proved that mooks aren't very useful beyond fodder. I feel bad for that one spearman that lived.

Finally, thanks for the replies. I didn't go into great depth with my own sallies back, but I got a lot to think about.

I suspect that Alicia will end up defined by who she spends most of her time with and attention on, for better or for worse. It says a lot about her as a paladin and as a person, doesn't it?

You know, you're perfectly free to introduce Alicia to some sweet orphans that require her protection and guidance. She can only work with what she's given, after all.

<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

I fully expected that response.
