Ragnar

We were all sitting around in chat spouting riddles at each other, and given that we all seemed to enjoy it, I thought I'd start a thread.
These are taken from "The Green Guess Book" by Ward and Watson; Dodd, Mead, and Co., 1897.

No fair cheating and using the Google, and no fair running out and getting the book. If you put your mind to it, I think they can all be solved with a little bit of thinking. If there's no answer within a day or so, I'll throw in a hint. I'd like to try to keep this going for a while if there's interest.
The syntax on these is a bit different, so I'll give an example:

Men use my first for travel or show,
Favoured above the rest who wish to go;
The Greeks kept theirs, died for it, son and brother;
We yield ours lightly,- we can get another.

Not every mortal can attain my last,
Though toward it each is speeding overfast,
Hoping, the while, a happy whole to gain
Safe to the land that's free from woe and pain.

Here, the verse makes reference to the "first", which would be the first syllable. Likewise, the "second" is the second syllable, and the "whole" is the entire word.
So, the answer to this first one is "passage" - for "pass," it's used to get somewhere, and the passage at Thermopylae was fought for. For "age," everyone is aging, and finally, you might want a safe passage to another land.

So, moving on, the first challenge:

My first is an utterance of wonder or rage,
Quite closely confined, I should say, to the stage;
My second a fragment, a thing of small size;
A tamer of horses, my second, likewise;
It also is money; it's what a man did
To see if a false piece was artfully hid.
My whole is a covering, 't is used on a horse,
And better ones last not as long as the worse.

Good luck!

If you see Vampire Hikaru Shidou, it is Fox.  No one else does that.  You need no other evidence." - Dracos

"Huh? Which rant?" - Gary

Got to verify 'em, Ragnar =p
Well, Goodbye.

Ragnar

Sorry, sorry, sorry!
Busy week.
And YES! A point to Mr. Edward.

I'll upload the new one later today.

Go Edward!

Well, in the meantime... let's see...  Something for the comic fans.  A set, one for a line.

Done freelance and for free, - Sluggy Freelance
Pouring the soul into each panel,
Subtracting the normal rules,
yet they can't truly change their stripes,
whether spirit guides and mechanized beasts,
Or stick figures, epic inside, - Order of the Stick
oft bound in a book of genius,  - Girl Genius
there's cheerful something about them, - Something Positive
So even if one dies or seven dies,
Big ears carries on.

Pleased to be matching lines rather than dump guessing :)  I'll edit in correct guesses.
Well, Goodbye.
