It deals 1 point of damage and absorbs blood if tried to open.  Does it do that with the string?  Does it still do that if, say, we gently cut the bottom out with a knife when its in its non-defensive state?

It'd destroy one magical item, for sure, but, it would let us at whatever said magical item was protecting, which odds are to be more valuable at least informationwise.  It's somewhat hard to even sell right now, given it's a magic item with something in it that we don't know how to open.  Was someone looking for a poisoned bag of hiding precious really?

It's a bit heavy and fairly smooth - more like a solid object rather than something loose. It's firm to the prodding, though it has a slight bit of give if you keep poking it.

Well, of course I'm assuming I can get it out without breaking it.  there's a little give, it's a solid object.  A careful cut should release it.  A penny-ante knife should be up to the job.
