[20:02] <Kotono> --------------------------------------
[20:03] <Kotono> Once the others are gone, Wayland and Branna remain. "The caravan, you two?" Josa asks.
[20:04] <Wayland> Wayland nods. "I think I'll enjoy that, yes. Branna?"
[20:08] <Kotono> "Okay. Guarding's easy as long as nothing tries anything." Branna says. To this Josa nods, "Mr. Slist can be found in the White Pillar Boarding House. He's handling the arraingements, go see him and set this up."
[20:08] * Wayland nods and heads out!
[20:14] <Kotono> Heading out into the day, Branna pauses to stretch and then massage his arm. "Where'd you dig up that old paladin? Damned slavedriver, but he knows how to fight."
[20:14] <Wayland> "He's a friend of Andrea's, I believe. Did you learn well from him?"
[20:17] <Kotono> "Yeah, think so," Branna follows along, "Got the bruises to prove it. He's got the scars to prove he's done it before, too. "
[20:19] <Wayland> "Good, good. How is Noel doing? Do you know if his attitude is making any progress?"
[20:20] <Kotono> "Funny." Branna winces again, slowly lowering his arm, "His one victory in training was when he managed to sneak past both our guards and hit us from behind. Seems to think a fair fight's for suckers."
[20:22] <Wayland> "He's right, in a sense. Fair fights are for duels and showmanship. Real fights are rarely fair. Most often, you or your enemy has some sort of advantage over the other in combat. Learning how to overcome those situations is what makes you a good fighter."
[20:25] <Kotono> "Yeah, had the good end of ambushes before," Branna says, "But I think between a fair fight and running, Noel would probably choose running."
[20:28] <Wayland> "I think that it would also depend on what you're fighting for."
[20:30] <Kotono> "Yeah," Branna says, "Like a cause?"
[20:31] <Wayland> "Or something similar. Perhaps you and an opponent are evenly matched, but if you do not fight him, he will kill your friend at a later time. Would you fight him?"
[20:35] <Kotono> "Yeah," Branna says immediately, "Of course I would! It's not murder if it's defending someone, right?
[20:35] <Kotono> "
[20:38] <Wayland> Wayland grins. "That particular point is debatable, but no, I don't believe so. Protecting someone you care about, or even just an innocent you don't know, is laudable. That you may have to kill the assailant in the process is regrettable, but necessary sometimes. It is important to remember that you are not the law, though. If at all possible, seek to bring those who would do harm to others
[20:38] <Wayland> to justice, not just kill them."
[20:45] <Kotono> "Yeah," Branna says, "That why you didn't just kill Qusela when you had him?"
[20:49] <Wayland> "Yes. He had to be brought to proper justice. Justice is its own reward, though there are often physical rewards for justice as well."
[20:56] <Kotono> "Yeah, heard about the reward money," Branna says, "A  pile of fullmarks?"
[21:03] <Wayland> "Yes, we were very fortunate. I did not know that Sharrans were held in such low regard in Balmuria. It is good to know."
[21:17] <Kotono> "Oh yeah," Branna says as he pauses to stretch, as you walk amid the pressed people, "Some old history about them and the city back when things first expanded, around the turn of the century."
[21:24] <Wayland> "I see. I suppose I should look it up when I have the free time. For now we just need to find the White Pillar." Wayland says, looking around over the throngs of people.
[21:27] <Kotono> Finding the White Pillar isn't hard. It's a well kept four story house with a tiny lawns. Asking about gets you to Mr. Silst, a middle aged ox of a man, graying hair and bulky muscles slowly giving way to fat. He fills out a large wooden chair in his room, a half eaten lunch besides him. "Oh ho ho, so you're the caravan guards I asked for?"
[21:29] <Wayland> "Indeed we are, sir. I am Wayland, and this is my comrade Branna."
[21:39] <Kotono> The man stands up, cracking his knuckles. "Good. You two know how to fight at all?"
[21:40] <Wayland> Wayland grins and nods. "We have experience, yes."
[21:44] <Kotono> "Lemme see it," The big man says, before lunging right at Wayland, "Bare fisticuffs, the way real men fight!" OOC: Roll init.
[21:45] <Wayland> roll 1d20+3
[21:45] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d20+3 and gets 17." [1d20=14]
[21:45] <Kotono> roll 1d20+1 big man
[21:45] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+1 big man and gets 17." [1d20=16]
[21:45] <Kotono> rikk 1d20+9 Branna
[21:45] <Kotono> roll 1d20+9 Branna
[21:45] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+9 Branna and gets 14." [1d20=5]
[21:46] * Kotono changes topic to 'Wayland=Slist>Branna'
[21:46] <Kotono> OOC: Open Wayland.
[21:46] <Wayland> roll 1d20+6 Flurry!
[21:46] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d20+6 Flurry! and gets 22." [1d20=16]
[21:46] <Wayland> roll 1d20+6 Flurry!
[21:46] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d20+6 Flurry! and gets 10." [1d20=4]
[21:47] <Wayland> roll 1d8+1d6+3 assuming one hit
[21:47] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d8+1d6+3 assuming one hit and gets 11." [1d8=5][1d6=3]
[21:48] <Kotono> At the same time, the big man's fist arches down at Wayland!
[21:48] <Kotono> roll 1d20+5
[21:48] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+5 and gets 25." [1d20=20]
[21:48] <Kotono> roll 1d20+5 crit?
[21:48] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+5 crit? and gets 9." [1d20=4]
[21:48] <Kotono> roll 1d6+3 nonlethal owwies
[21:48] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d6+3 nonlethal owwies and gets 8." [1d6=5]
[21:49] <Kotono> WHAM! The two exchange blows! Wayland gets clocked in the side, shot going right for his kidneys! As bitter stomach bile fills his mouth, he strikes the big man right in the gut! His eyes almost pop out of his head as he falls down in a heap, gasping for air! "Oooooooow!"
[21:52] <Kotono> Branna looks on with a slight wince, "Think you got him, boss." OOC: Go ahead and free act.
[21:54] <Wayland> "I'm sorry, Perhaps I should have explained further. I'm Wayland of Chillander, a Monk of the Divine Wind." Wayland says as he offers the man a hand.
[21:58] <Kotono> Coughing as he gets up, "Elf monk?" he wipes his lips, "Blue elf monk? Hell, good enough for me! Fuck, that's pretty intimidating!" He manages to get back to his seat, breathing in and out for a good half minute. "Hell, you got the job if you two want it. Couple of days both ways if nothing goes wrong, one day in Parsifal to load up and rest. 'bout a week round trip. Got good horses and
[21:58] <Kotono> wagons, should make great time."
[21:59] <Wayland> "Sounds fun. LEt's make this happen then." Wayland says.
[22:03] <Kotono> "We'll be leaving first light tomorrow morning. Get rested up, we'll be preparing just by the Commerce Quarter's gates." He offers his hand out, "Payment on services rendered. Assuming it's a week, that means at 25 marks a day...175 marks total."
[22:06] * Wayland nods and taked the man's hand, shaking it firmly. "See you tomorrow morning then!"
[22:39] <Kotono> Morning comes for Wayland. He meets Branna, the two heading for the front gates of the city at the unholy hour of 5 AM. Here various groups of carts and horses are lined up, being attended to. Amid one group of them you see Mr. Slist, overseeing men working. Pale lanternlight provides light as comes over to approach you, "It'll be a few while we finish preparing, so feel free to sit your
[22:39] <Kotono> asses down," he says, "Too damned early, isn't it?"
[22:41] <Wayland> "I'm usually up by now anyway. The mornings are cooler and I can see fine in the dark. Branna may object, though." Wayland says.
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

Corwin

[19:52] <Kotono> Branna answers by way of yawn. As he does, Mr. Slist kicks back against the side of a wagon. "You know, you guys got one hell of a crazy boss. Guess how I heard about you guys?"
[19:53] <Wayland> "Something to do with candy?"
[19:55] <Kotono> "Yeah, my wife saw a candy queen or something," He shakes his head, "Got an earful from your boss when I asked him about it."
[19:58] <Wayland> "Yeah, I was part of that group." Wayland laughs. "It was fun. I hear it generated a lot of business, too."
[20:00] <Kotono> "It's something else," He grins and crosses his arms. As you talk you can see torchlight coming 'round a corner, down MErchant's Way. A band of guardsmen are coming this way, a good twenty of them.
[20:02] <Wayland> Nodding with his head toward the group, Wayland says, "I don't see this often. I wonder what's going on."
[20:06] <Kotono> "Trouble," Mr. Slist frowns as they come closer. Branna eyes them and stays against the side of the wagon! They pass by to all eyes on them, marching ahead to the front gates. There's some conversation with the gate guards, then a soldier comes forth. In a loud voice, "Attention! By order of Commander Hellman Oberuth, all traffic leaving Balmuria is temporarily suspended. Please wait
[20:06] <Kotono> patiently for this matter to be resolved."
[20:07] <Kotono> The profanities that come forth from Slist are wholeheartedly heated, and after a quick torrent of them, "Why the FUCK for?" he mutters, "Did someone run off with a fucking treasury?"
[20:08] * Wayland sighs. "It's always something, isn't it?"
[20:09] <Kotono> "Someone done fucked up," Branna says, "Pretty bad, too. So what do we do, wait?"
[20:12] <Wayland> "Well, I suppose we could go see this commander the guard was talking about, see if there's anythign we can do to speed things along. Just sitting here could take days."
[20:18] <Kotono> "Commander Oberuth? If you got the swing to go see him, you could probably get us out in the first place." Slist says, "If you do, I'll throw in a bonus. Sitting here's burning money and not much else."
[20:19] * Wayland nods. "We'll be back then. Come on, Branna."
[20:22] <Kotono> Branna follows, and once out of earshot, "Boss...you know who Commander Oberuth is? I mean, no 'fense, but people like us ain't got that sorta access."
[20:25] <Wayland> "Which is the better choice, Branna? To try to do something and maybe fail, or to do nothing and fail without question?" Wayland says.
[20:27] <Kotono> "...yeah, makes sense," Following along still, "So boss, how're you gonna do it?"
[20:27] <Wayland> "No idea, Branna." Wayland grins. "We'll just have to wing it. Any idea where the commander's office is?"
[20:28] <Kotono> "Highwatch Fortress, I guess," Branna says, "Know anyone in there, by any chance?"
[20:30] <Wayland> "We have an ally in Captain Wedge from when we brought in the Sharran. Perhaps he will be able to get us an audience."
[20:35] <Kotono> As you climb to Highwatch Fortress, the rays of dawn cascade over the horizon. In Lathander's light does the Mythal glow in the sky above, showering everything with sunny light. At the gates of Highwatch Fortress a pair of soldiers escort the two of you inside to a room to wait. It's well over an hour of cooling your heels, until at last Captain Wedge enters. "Good morning," he greets,
[20:35] <Kotono> "Heard you came up here around dawn. I didn't see another Sharran tied up, so what's the reason for the early morning haste?"
[20:37] <Wayland> "We were planning to guard a caravan out of the city this morning when a group of soldiers came up and informed us that all traffic leaving the city had been suspended. We wanted to know if we could help with anything."
[20:39] <Kotono> "Ah no." With a polite shake of his head, "The matter is in hand. The Crimson Guard is dealing with the manhunt personally."
[20:41] <Wayland> "The Crimson Guard? What did the man do?" Wayland says.
[20:49] <Kotono> "Demonic magic...the less said, the better," Captain Wedge says, "With any fortune, the city gates should be opened again by noon."
[20:52] <Wayland> "That would be a rather fooling thing to do in this city, I'd think." Wayland frowns.
[20:56] <Kotono> "There are fools aplenty in the world," Captain Wedge says, "Just rest, and by noon you should be on your way."
[20:57] <Wayland> "If by chance we see them man, could you describe him? I'd rather not discover he was part of our caravan some hours from now."
[20:59] <Kotono> "Tall, well kept, not muscular but not fat. Very slender. Wears red and gold." The answers come willingly, "If you see a man like that, contact the guard immediately."
[21:02] * Wayland nods and stands, offering his hand. "Thank you, Captain. If we see the man, we'll be sure to let the guard know."
[21:03] <Kotono> With a handshake given, Wayland is lead out. As you walk down from Highwatch Fortress, "Yeah, guess you are sort of important. Getting to talk to a Captain just like that," Snapping his fingers, "Ain't so bad."
[21:06] <Wayland> "No, not so bad at all." Wayland nods. "Hopefully, the Crimson Guard can get this situation sorted out soon."
[21:27] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[21:27] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 98." [1d100=98]
[21:27] <Kotono> roll 1d100 wow, that subtables
[21:27] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 wow, that subtables and gets 73." [1d100=73]
[21:34] <Kotono> The morning begins to pass by, no sign of any trouble. By about ten AM Slist is restless, arms folded and sitting against the wheel of one of the wagons. "Dammit all," he mutters, "Hey, you two."
[21:35] * Wayland nods in greeting.
[21:39] <Kotono> "Either of you any good with cards or dice?" He asks.
[21:41] <Wayland> "I'm not much of a gambler myself, no. Branna might be though."
[21:47] <Kotono> "Little bit," Branna replies. After that, Slist goes on, "I ain't paying you two tos it around and wait. I know a place to get a good game or two, if you want to kill some time."
[21:52] <Wayland> "Better than sitting around here, I suppose. Let's go."
[21:58] <Kotono> "The Floating Clover, it's down in Old City," Slist says, "Ask for Dolomir, you'll know him when you see him too. Big man, all gaudily dressed up."
[22:05] <Wayland> "Alright. Let's go, Branna."
[22:12] <Kotono> The Floating Clover is a building in the Old City, in the southeast of it. A massive four-leaf clover is painted onto the front, the bottom leaf including the door in.
[22:14] * Wayland heads in!
[22:19] <Kotono> Within is a carpeted floor! Everthing smells like metal and potpourri in here, several tables. Games of chance and cards are being played. All about are symbols - four leaf clovers, rabbits feet, crossed fingers.
[22:22] * Wayland blinks. "...not quite what I expected."
[22:23] <Kotono> "Looks like I fell ass-first into something I didn't expect," Branna agrees, "Wow. Hey boss, I saw someone who talked about someplace like this before. Ever heard of Tymora?"
[22:24] <Wayland> "Is that a god?"
[22:32] <Kotono> "Yeah, Goddess of Luck," Branna murmurs, "I got an earful about it."
[22:33] <Wayland> "Oh yeah? From who?"
[22:36] <Kotono> "Ashlana was her name," Branna starts to smile at that, eyes going distant in thought, "That was a damn good weekend, of what I remember of it." Snapping back after a moment, "So guess there's more of those types here?"
[22:40] <Wayland> "Probably. Let's look arouns. We've got two hours or so to kill."
[22:53] <Kotono> Looking about you see various games of chance at play. Card games, dicing, roulette and other such things. Most of the people seem to be into it, gambling varying sums of money. The people about here are mostly well-off looking, well groomed, kept and dressed. Branna looks about as well, "Gonna try any, boss?"
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

Corwin

[20:43] <Wayland> "Hmm..." says Wayland, looking around. "I don't really know. I feel as thought it could just be a waste of money. Why don't you go first, Branna. I'll see how you do. Perhaps I'll join in after."
[20:46] <Kotono> Branna nods and goes to a roulette table! He places down three marks on number 3! The ball is spun...
[20:46] <Kotono> roll 1d38
[20:46] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d38 and gets 13." [1d38=13]
[20:47] <Kotono> After a few moments it ends up on 13. Branna grouses and turns back, "No such luck. You wanna give it a try?"
[20:48] <Wayland> Wayland looks at the table, thinking for a few moments.  Finally, he places three coins down on 00.
[20:49] <Wayland> roll 1d38 yes?
[20:49] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d38 yes? and gets 9." [1d38=9]
[21:06] <Kotono> It spins 'round and 'round, ending up on number 9! "The Baator number," The spinner announces, scooping up Wayland's money. Branna grumps, taking out another three marks and placing it down on 10. "Luck's gotta turn around after that, right?"
[21:06] <Wayland> "I suppose."
[21:07] <Kotono> roll 1d38
[21:07] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d38 and gets 21." [1d38=21]
[21:08] <Kotono> 'round and 'round it spins again! This time it ends up in 21, Branna sighing as the spinner announces, "The true number, the true number." Looking over to Wayland, "Say, ever played any card games? OR dice? Gotta be better than getting fleeced here."
[21:09] <Wayland> "I played cards when I was a boy, yes. Maybe we should try those."
[21:13] <Kotono> The two head over, finding tables of blackjack, poker and other such varied games. As you go, a man comes forth. He has a belly, his entire corpulent frame covered in rich gold cloth. Patterns of lucky symbols adorn it. He has a mouth full of golden teeth, a big smile on his face. "Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen! If I may have a moment of your time, for you look to be discriminating
[21:13] <Kotono> gamblers!"
[21:17] <Wayland> Wayland looks at the overly large man. "Is there something we can help you with?"
[21:18] <Kotono> "I do believe there is!" He claps his hands together, "Dolomir's my name, Tymora's festivities is my game. Do you two trust in Tymora to guide your fortunes?"
[21:19] <Wayland> "I didn't know who Tymora was until about twenty minutes ago. Sure, what the hell."
[21:25] <Kotono> "Ah my friend, you have chosen a superb time to believe!" He reaches out and clasps Wayland's shoulder, "I have recently come into possession of a magical mystical roulette wheel! One blessed by the Lady Tymora herself, one that people such as you could greatly benefit from. Such a spin on it can bolster yourself forever, as if the hand of Lady Luck touched you!"
[21:31] <Wayland> Wayland raises an eyebrow. "Really? With no negative effects?"
[21:33] <Kotono> "Ah, results do vary some," he admits, "Also the proper roulette balls to spin it are rare, so a payment of 500 marks is mandatory before a spin." Clearing his throat after, "But I sense you are well off and discriminating gambler, interested in the biggest chances!"
[21:36] <Wayland> "Five hundred-!" Wayland chokes. "No thank you, good sir."
[21:38] <Kotono> "Damn, that's enough to..." Branna starts counting on his fingers. After, "A lot!"
[21:38] <Kotono> The man's fat face falls, "Good sir, perhaps then an alternate method can be arrainged. Perhaps you would care to gamble to win a spin on the wheel instead?"
[21:40] <Wayland> "I debate whether I wish to spin at all. What are the negative effects of spinning? I wish to know what ground I stand to lose."
[21:42] <Kotono> "The results do vary..." Admitting this after a moment, "While many gain benefit, a few report reduced physical strength, mental capacity, manual dexterity and other such concerns. Of course, believe in Tymora and her luck will show you through!
[21:42] <Kotono> "
[21:45] <Wayland> "So, like all things in here, it is merely a game of long-odd chance with much higher stakes than mere gold. Yes?"
[21:46] <Kotono> "In essence, yes," Dolomir says.
[21:49] <Wayland> "Then my thanks for the opportunity, my good man, but I must pass. I find it to be irresponsible to gamble away my health, let alone my money."
[21:51] <Kotono> "Ah. I see." The man's face falls, but her turns to Branna. "What of you, good man? Would you care to gamble? Isee you also possess wealth and a fine palate."
[21:55] <Kotono> Branna gives him a look, glancing at Wayland, "I got some money on me 'cause of the work we did while you were gone, but not enough to afford a spin." he admits, "What'cha think, boss? Worth trying to get the money?"
[21:56] <Wayland> "If you wish to play the game, Branna, you can. I won't stop you. I don't think it's a wise choice, though.
[21:56] <Wayland> "
[21:57] <Kotono> "Then I won't," Branna says, "Sorry guy." He turns to Wayland, "How about we get goin' then?"
[21:58] <Kotono> Dolomir's face falls yet further, "I see...perhaps other stakes would suit you? Perhaps that marvelous blade you carry? The prizes you could win gambling that are...extrodinary."
[22:00] <Wayland> "I came here mostly for your benefit, Branna. I don't gamble because of personal choices. We needed to kill two hours and most people don't have the ability to simply sit patiently for that long and do nothing. If you're ready to go, let's."
[22:03] <Kotono> "Eeeeh..." Branna considers, "Sorry," he says, turning away. "Let's go." Thereafter, return to the caravan is without incident. You find that the gates are being opened as you return. "Good news, the guards are opening things up," Mr. Slist says.
[22:04] <Wayland> "Good to hear. Shall we be on our way?"
[22:07] <Kotono> "Let's," With that the caravan takes it's way on!
[22:08] <Kotono> The first half day of travel is without incident. Balmuria is left on the horizon, the roads ahead well worn. The ground changes from coastal plains to rockier formations, with hints of hills coming by nightfall.  A night's rest passes without incident, the next day's travel begun...
[22:08] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[22:08] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 29." [1d100=29]
[22:08] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[22:08] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 36." [1d100=36]
[22:09] <Kotono> The terrain becomes steadily rockier and more mountain-like, the caravan making decent time with no rain. As you travel along, Branna stretches back. "Say boss," he says, "Gonna do anything in Parsifal while you're there?"
[22:14] <Wayland> "Well, I don't believe I've ever been to Parsifal so I think I'll have a look around town, see what there is to do. Maybe promote our business a little while we're there." Wayland muses. "What about you?"
[22:17] <Kotono> "Once or twice," Branna says, "It's an overgrown mining camp, 'cept it's actually well policed. The Baronies keep a decent eye on it so it's not usually out of hand. So it has a lot of the things miners enjoy," With an elbow nudge to Wayland, "Those sorta things. I'll settle for some ale and a decent bed, though."
[22:22] <Wayland> Rolling his eyes a bit, Wayland grins. "I suppose it'll be nice then."
[22:23] <Kotono> With that the two continue on, the miles passing...(More)
[22:23] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[22:23] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 45." [1d100=45]
[22:23] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[22:23] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 3." [1d100=3]
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

Corwin

[19:50] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[19:50] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 1." [1d100=1]
[19:52] <Kotono> The rest of the trip to Parsifal passes without incident. The city itself is set into the side ofa slowrising mountain, stone gate leading to several terrances. Heavy stone buildings are the norm everywhere. Past the entry gate is a large opening yard, the caravan unloading in the rays of the late afternoon sun. Mr. Slist comes up, "We won't leave until the dawn of the day after tomorrow,
[19:52] <Kotono> so you have liberty until then."
[19:56] * Wayland nods. "Nice and quiet so far. I'm goiong to check out the city."
[19:56] <Kotono> "Want company?" Branna asks, stretching out.
[19:57] <Wayland> "Sure."
[20:01] <Kotono> OOC: Going to just tkae the sights in or wander or...?
[20:02] <Wayland> OOC: Wandering is what I do. I'll wander and find something, I'm sure.
[20:03] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[20:03] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 73." [1d100=73]
[20:06] <Kotono> You wander for an hour, taking in the lower rows. Here inns, festhalls, taverns and shops dominate. As you walk past a storefront, the door ahead of you opens. Lumbering out is a squat, broad man. He wears full plate armor, a heavy warhammer slung over his back. His face is brown, dry and harsh looking. He stops cold at Wayland, eyes locking onto him.
[20:09] * Wayland returns the look.
[20:09] <Wayland> "Yes?"
[20:09] <Kotono> Wayland feels a tenseness spread into him under that gaze. "I don't like you," he says, matter of fact.
[20:10] <Wayland> "Sounds like you have a problem, then."
[20:11] <Kotono> roll 1d20+3
[20:11] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+3 and gets 10." [1d20=7]
[20:12] <Kotono> His voice rumbles deep in his chest, "Or you do," he says, slamming a fist into his open palm, "You're...."
[20:13] <Wayland> "About to kick your ass if you don't back off." Wayland says, settling into a fighting stance.
[20:14] <Kotono> Branna stays at Wayland's side, "Don't know what your problem is, but my boss ain't gonna take that," he declares, hand on the hilt of his blade.
[20:15] <Kotono> The brown, harsh skinned man glowers at Wayland, "I don't have time for airheads," he snaps, turning away.
[20:17] * Wayland blinks in confusion before frowning, realization settling in. "Rockhead." He says, walking away.
[20:17] <Kotono> "Hell?" Branna mutters, following along with Wayland. Once you're a few steps away, "The hell was that about?"
[20:19] <Wayland> "He's an earth genasi with a bad attitude, that's all." Wayland says.
[20:23] <Kotono> "Hm." Glancing back the way the other genasi went off, "Oh hell, let's go get a drink. Sound good?"
[20:25] <Wayland> "Yeah, let's go."
[20:28] <Wayland> "Just keep in mind that I don't drink alcohol, Branna."
[20:28] <Kotono> Soon enough you have a seat at a bar. Putting a few silve rcoins down, Branna orders a pair of ales. Once he gets his and takes a long pull, "Aaaah. Hey barkeep," A pause as Branna shrugs and starts working on the other mug of ale at the same time, "Anything goin' on in town?"
[20:32] <Kotono> The barkeep is a portly man with a limp, pausing in his work. "Lookin' for the news?" He meets eyes with Branna, who fishes out a few more silver coins and places them down. Once that's done, "News around today is that a few of those damn lizards showed up in a new tunnel and injured miners. No deaths, but it's gonna slow things down a bit while those lizards get dead."
[20:32] <Wayland> "Lizards?"
[20:33] <Kotono> "Shocker Lizards. Fucking vermin, they live in the mountains further south and show up here occasionally. Fucking vermin to the last." The barkeep spits onto the floor, "Occasionally a new mineshaft stumbles on some of the fuckers, and it stops everything cold until they're all exterminated."
[20:34] <Kotono> "Ran into a few of 'em awhile back," Branna nods, "Nasty sons of bitches, It was only two, and damned if we didn't cut 'em up when we say them."
[20:35] <Wayland> "They weren't so bad.
[20:35] <Wayland> "
[20:36] <Kotono> "Two of them aren't so bad," The barkeep says, "They get worse as they band together. GEt four of them together and they'll kill a grown man in one shock. Get six together and it's worse. Get more than that and you'd best get your ass away."
[20:36] <Kotono> "Guess," Branna says as he drinks deeper, "They got a friend good, but nothing fatal."
[20:37] * Wayland nods. "I suppose that we were lucky then.
[20:40] <Kotono> "Yeah." A pause as he works, "That's the big news," he says, pausing a moment. He scowls, "Hold on a moment." As he goes around and out the bar, five people enter. Each one wears scruffy clothes with hints of chainmail. Small blades are on their belts, looking about the tavern.
[20:57] <Kotono> The barkeep goes on over to them, "What the hell do all of you want?" he asks. "Don't be making trouble here!"
[20:58] * Wayland leans back and looks at the men.
[21:11] * Wayland nudges Branna. "If these guys cause trouble..."
[21:11] <Kotono> Two of them push the barkeep back, as three advance. "Got it," Branna murmurs, as they come towards a back table. A pair of men are sitting there, looking like workers. "Hey," The three thugs say, "You're late!"
[21:15] <Kotono> As the tavern goes quieter, "...So?" One of the two men there says, a middle aged man with a grimace, "Damned shocker lizards caused hell again!"
[21:23] <Kotono> "So?" The leader of the three thugs grunts, "Today's the day. Pay up." He draws a dagger, inspecting it. "You know."
[21:26] <Kotono> Branna glances over at Wayland, "Gona do anything?" he whispers.
[21:31] <Wayland> "Yup." Wayland whispers back, standing and walking over to the men. "I think you men should go. Another time to conduct your business would be a better idea. It is obvious that, due to the recent trouble at the mine, they do not have what is owed to you. Spilling their blood will not cause them to get it faster, and will most likely make it take longer to get what you want. Leave it
[21:31] <Wayland> alone."
[21:32] <Wayland> roll 1d20+1 diplo check yes?
[21:32] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d20+1 diplo check yes? and gets 3." [1d20=2]
[21:34] <Kotono> With an open glare at Wayland, "Who the fuck are you, blue boy? Did your mom fuck a lake? Mind your own business."
[21:35] <Kotono> Branna mouths, 'fuck a lake'? with a look of complete disbelief, watching and ready.
[21:35] <Wayland> "A cloud, actually. I'm making this my business. Get out." Wayland smiles thinly.
[21:37] <Kotono> The man has his dagger in hand, "Get 'em," he says, "Make an example out of your ass, boy!" AT that the three men advance, the two holding the barkeep back preparing as well! Branna draws his blade, as other patrons duck under tables or behind the bar! OOC: Init, barfight seems in the cards.
[21:38] <Kotono> roll 1d20+9 Branna
[21:38] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+9 Branna and gets 13." [1d20=4]
[21:39] <Wayland> roll 1d20+3 init
[21:39] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d20+3 init and gets 17." [1d20=14]
[21:39] <Kotono> roll 1d20+2 T1
[21:39] <Kotono> roll 1d20+2 T2
[21:39] <Kotono> roll 1d20+2 T3
[21:39] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+2 T1 and gets 17." [1d20=15]
[21:39] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+2 T2 and gets 4." [1d20=2]
[21:39] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+2 T3 and gets 22." [1d20=20]
[21:39] <Kotono> roll 1d20+2 T4
[21:39] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+2 T4 and gets 9." [1d20=7]
[21:39] <Kotono> roll 1d20+2 T5
[21:39] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+2 T5 and gets 3." [1d20=1]
[21:40] * Kotono changes topic to 'T3(22)>T1=Wayland(17)>Branna(13)>T4(9)>T2(4)>T5(3)'
[21:41] <Kotono> The third one quickly goes the long way around to Wayland's flank, dagger flashing out! He has a sharp grin on his face as he takes a quick strike at Wayland! Meanwhile the two men look up at their saviors, promptly ducking under the table!
[21:41] <Kotono> roll 1d20+5 flatfooted AC?
[21:41] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+5 flatfooted AC? and gets 13." [1d20=8]
[21:43] <Wayland> OOC: 13
[21:44] <Kotono> roll 1d4+2+1d6 ow
[21:44] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d4+2+1d6 ow and gets 5." [1d4=1][1d6=2]
[21:45] <Kotono> It's a quick, sharp stab into the small of Wayland's back! It's not a deep wound, but it's a bleeder! OOC: Go Wayalnd.
[21:46] <Wayland> Wayland spins around, growling, and slams into the man that stabbed him with a fury!
[21:46] <Wayland> roll 1d20+6 flurry!
[21:46] <Wayland> roll 1d20+6 flurry!
[21:46] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d20+6 flurry! and gets 16." [1d20=10]
[21:46] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d20+6 flurry! and gets 9." [1d20=3]
[21:47] <Kotono> Wayland throws a pair of blows out, but the man is able to dodge one and parry another! At the same time the one in front of Wayland makes a stab at Wayland! "Idiot, we got you surrounded!" he grins, "No one gets outta this!"
[21:47] <Kotono> roll 1d20+5 AC?
[21:47] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+5 AC? and gets 18." [1d20=13]
[21:47] <Wayland> OOC: 17 ffffffff
[21:59] <Kotono> roll 1d4+2+1d6 ow
[21:59] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d4+2+1d6 ow and gets 7." [1d4=2][1d6=3]
[21:59] <Kotono> Wayland gets another stab across the arm, "Now get outta here before you regret it!" He commands! OOC: Branna.
[22:02] <Kotono> Branna has his sword out, mists flowing from it! "You stand down," he says, approaching, "Or you're gonna regret it!" He goes for the first one, taking a single well placed slash1
[22:02] <Kotono> roll 1d20+7
[22:02] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+7 and gets 8." [1d20=1]
[22:04] <Kotono> But Branna's blow is blithely dodged, a smirk even as cold mists trail behind the blade! "That it, fancy boy?" The fourth one holds the door, as does the fifth! AS the second one goes 'round to go after Branna!
[22:04] <Kotono> roll 1d20+5
[22:04] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+5 and gets 12." [1d20=7]
[22:04] <Kotono> This blow gets sidestepped, evaded swiftly as the third one presses his advantage on Wayland!
[22:04] <Kotono> roll 1d20+7 (+2 flank)
[22:04] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+7 (+2 flank) and gets 19." [1d20=12]
[22:04] <Kotono> roll 1d4+2+1d6 ow
[22:04] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d4+2+1d6 ow and gets 4." [1d4=1][1d6=1]
[22:05] <Kotono> Wayland gets another wound across his back, a raking, shallow slash! OOC: You're up.
[22:08] <Wayland> Wayland narrows his eyes, a coruscating red field appearing around him, molding itself to his skin! OOC: +4ac force armor for the next 2 hours
[22:10] <Kotono> OOC: Concentration check, manifesting a power triggers an AoO just like spellcasting.
[22:10] <Wayland> roll 1d20+6 concentration
[22:10] * Hatbot --> "Wayland rolls 1d20+6 concentration and gets 18." [1d20=12]
[22:16] <Kotono> Pure energy manifests around Wayland, shielding his body! At the same time his opponent scowls, "Magic!" He hisses, taking a quick stab nonetheless!
[22:16] <Kotono> roll 1d20+7
[22:16] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+7 and gets 9." [1d20=2]
[22:18] <Kotono> But the onrushing force knocks the blow back! The fourth one sends a glance to the fifth, giving each other long looks! At the same time the second drops back, withdrawing back to the door! The third glowers, "Fucking wizards!" He says, also withdrawing back!
[22:25] <Wayland> "Get out of here before we get serious." Wayland says, waving his hand at the door.
[22:27] <Kotono> With that the last one wtihdraws, a sour look but the five go packing!
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

[20:38] <Kotono> ---
[20:39] <Kotono> "Damn boss," Branna goes to shield him as the ruffians retreat, "You alright? They went straight to stabbing you."
[20:40] <Wayland> "Murderous scum." Wayland nods and looks down at the men hiding behind the table. "Are you lot alright?"
[20:41] <Kotono> The older man peeks out from under the table, "I think so," h e checks himself over, crawling out. "Thanks."
[20:42] <Wayland> "What was that about, anyhow?"
[20:46] <Kotono> "Got into a bit of debt," As he crawls out, the tavern slowly returns to normal. People come back out, drinks resumed. He dusts himself off as his companion comes out and does likewise. "Why'd you interfere? I'm grateful, but it wasn't your fight."
[20:48] <Wayland> "Seemed like the right thing to do at the time. For the future, you should probably reconsider who you will be taking out loans from, and may want to consider an actual bank. I doubt you've seen the last of those men though."
[20:49] <Kotono> "You speak wisely," The man agrees, "Thanks," He nods and then starts to go out in a hurry, his companion following. "Making myself scarce is a splendid idea as well."
[20:54] * Wayland watches the men leave and gives Branna a meaningful look. He turns to the bartender and says, "I'm sorry for causing trouble for you."
[20:57] <Kotono> Branna shrugs, "I dunno, boss." The barkeep shakes his head back and forth, "Next round's on the house. Damn blockheads aren't good for mucho f anything but raising hell."
[21:01] <Wayland> Nodding, Wayland has a seat again. "One more, and then I think it'd be best to move on. I don't want them coming back with more men and starting something even bigger here."
[21:04] <Kotono> Drinks are poured as Branna sits back down, "Ain't no good fighting a gang of pissed off thugs. Bad things happen, so let's drink and beat it."
[21:05] * Wayland nods and finishes his water.
[21:07] <Kotono> Once done Branna rises, "Well hell, now what, boss?" Wayland gets a look from him, "Wanna go call it a day and get a room, or go see more of what's out here?"
[21:11] <Wayland> "Well, I've been stabbed at least once today. Perhaps it would be best to call it a day."
[21:15] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[21:15] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 9." [1d100=9]
[21:16] <Kotono> OOC: Okay, night's rest passes without incident. Restore HP as approriate?
[21:22] <Kotono> The next day rises rainy and quiet. You have the day to kill, the caravan not doing anything until leaving tomorrow at dawn. OOC: If you want to do anything for the day, say so. If you just want to lay low in yo8ur room, say so and I'll move you along.
[21:23] <Wayland> Though he may come to regret it later, Wayland stretches and sets off to find Branna for another day of exploring Parsifal.
[21:34] <Kotono> Branna looks refreshed as you set out. As you step out the door and into the rain, "Excuse me," A man's voice calls to you. Approaching you is a man in armor, breastplate, armguards, greaves and shield. On his breastplate is a green field, with three suns shining above it. He has brown hair and a brown beard, one eye squinted mostly shut. A well worn greataxe is strapped to his back.
[21:37] * Wayland blinks. "Hello."
[21:39] <Kotono> "Errant Knight Canel." He inclines his head to Wayland, "I'd like to talk. How about a warm breakfast in a dry restaurant, on me?"
[21:41] <Wayland> "I find that most agreeable, Knight." Wayland nods.
[21:46] <Kotono> You are taken to a nearby restaurant. Here the rains are held away, a table between the two of you. Eggs, sausage, gravy and bread makes your breakfast. Canel eats heartily, pausing after the first few bites. "I heard you're an accomplished warrior and magician," he begins.
[21:49] <Wayland> "Ahh, heard about that scuffle yesterday did you? While I am skilled in a fight, what I do is not magic, and I only have a few uses for it so far. Not nearly enough to be considered 'accomplished.'"
[21:51] <Kotono> "Hmm." A pause for a big bite of eggs, "If it's not magic, then what is it?"
[21:54] <Wayland> "I'm not quite sure. Force of will, perhaps? I've not discovered much to do with it yet, but it's rather strong when it does work. I try not to rely on it too much. I'm more grounded in my monk training, as it stands. I was taught by the Order of the Divine Wind."
[22:02] <Kotono> "Mmm. I've heard of them," He pauses to eat more, putting down his fork after. "You had a friend with you as well?"
[22:03] <Wayland> "Yes, he's traveling with me. His name is Branna."
[22:10] <Kotono> "Well, are the two of you interested in work?" He pauses to rap his knuckles on his breastplate, "I serve Purinn and Purinn's interests. I'm going around and, well, the simplest way is to say I'm scouting out talent."
[22:14] <Wayland> "Unfortunately, I must decline. We are currently on a job guarding a caravan from Balmuria, we work for a troubleshooting company there as well."
[22:15] <Kotono> "Hm." He pauses to consider those words and at last nods, "A troubleshooting company?"
[22:16] * Wayland nods. "Whimsical Sweets and Troubleshooting, perhaps you've heard of us?"
[22:18] <Kotono> "Can't say I have, but you're based in Balmuria?" He asks, "I'll be heading that way soon. Could be good to know," he says, "What sort of troubleshooting exactly?"
[22:20] <Wayland> "Most sorts. We try to stay out of relationship or religious issues, but we're usually game for anything else."
[22:21] <Kotono> "Mmm-hmmm." He considers, "Would you be willing to search for suitable talent for Purinn as a job?"
[22:29] <Wayland> "I'm not sure how much help I'll be, I'm only in town until dawn tomorrow."
[22:33] <Kotono> "I meant once your current job was finished." He says, "I'd like to try hiring Whimisical Sweets, if you look competent."
[22:36] <Wayland> "Well, we're blooded. We've fought werewolves, Sharrans, and elementals."
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

Corwin

[20:44] <Kotono> "Impressive," He raises his glass to Wayland a moment, "Purinn is a relatively new country, one that needs loyal knights and soldiers. Some of Balmuria's best warriors came from afar, so how better for us to learn the lessons there than to do the same?"
[20:49] <Wayland> "So what is it exactly that you're looking for?"
[20:51] <Kotono> "Talent," He says, "Fine warriors, crafty magicians, pious clerics, sneaky thieves." A pause here for a light, passing shrug, "People who can be useful to Purinn and help it grow. See," He pauses to eat more of his meal, "Any nation can have soldiers. But these days, an army can't stop you from meeting the same limitation King Ferdi did."
[20:56] <Wayland> "Are you looking for something short-term or something more permanent?"
[20:58] <Kotono> "More permanent," Canel replies, "People who will put roots down and make Purinn their home."
[21:00] <Wayland> "Well, I'll discuss it with my boss when I get back to Balmuria then. In the mean time, is there anything that we can do for you in the next day?"
[21:05] <Kotono> He hums a minute, busying himself with finishing off breakfast. "Could you tell me more about this force of will?"
[21:07] <Wayland> "I wish I could. I don't quite understand it myself. It's a very recent development, you see."
[21:09] <Kotono> "Hmm. How much do you charge for a day's labor?" Canel asks.
[21:14] <Wayland> "Twenty-five if there's no risk to life or limb."
[21:16] <Kotono> "Deal," He says, "I'll hire you for the day. I want to see this 'force of will' up close." He rises then, "Let's go somewhere better for this?"
[21:21] <Wayland> "I can do that." Wayland nods. "Where would you like to go?
[21:21] <Wayland> "
[21:23] <Kotono> The answer is taking Wayland outside. Into the rain, up several terrences and higher up. You come to a stone building half set into the stony mountains, the insides dry and warm.  It's a simple enough living room, a dying fire in the fireplace. Canel busies himself stoking it back up, and then a few rooms back. He comes back with inkpot, quill and a book. Sitting at a table, "Show me this
[21:23] <Kotono> force of will," he begins.
[21:49] <Wayland> "Very well." Wayland focuses for a mement before the air around him ripples red, a thin film of force conforming to his skin before fading from view.
[21:51] <Kotono> Canel spends all tha time studying, writing voluminosly in his book. "The red air...I've not seen something like that. What's it do?"
[21:52] <Wayland> "Near as I can tell, it's a field of force. It provides some protection against physical blows."
[21:53] <Kotono> "Mmmm," Canel rises and draws a dagger. "Let me test the flat of this against it."
[21:54] * Wayland holds out his arm.
[21:57] <Kotono> A few pokes are given, a low whistle, "It's like hitting plated steel." He stops and goes to write more, "How long have you been able to do this? When did it manifest?"
[21:58] <Wayland> "A few weeks to a month perhaps?"
[22:09] <Kotono> "Mmm, mmm, mmm," He murmrus as he writes, "What was the circumstances of it's first manifestation?"
[22:10] * Wayland shrugs. "I was meditating a few days after I died and it just came to me."
[22:14] <Kotono> A stop in his writing, "You died?"
[22:17] <Wayland> "I forgot to mention that, didn't I? Damn. I was savaged by a werewolf and /gquit
[22:18] <Wayland> "I forgot to mention that, didn't I? Damn. I was savaged by a werewolf and did not survive the encounter." Wayland nods. "Afterward, I was visited by an angel of Ilmater, who granted me a second chance at life."
[22:23] <Kotono> ""Ilmater, hm? Perhaps this is divine power?" He says, "Some sort of divine protection?"
[22:24] * Wayland shakes his head. "No, I was gifted with powers b Ilmater, and it feels different."
[22:29] <Kotono> "Mmm...curious and curiouser," Canel murmurs, "Can you doa n ything else?"
[22:34] <Wayland> "Only one other thing, I can focus and gain a small amout of prescience. I think it may be useful for striking in combat, but I have yet to use it."
[22:35] <Kotono> "Mmmmmmmmmm." A simple murmur again, "It's unusual. I've studied powers in detail and I've not seen something like this. The armor is akin to a mage's armor spell, but it's not quite the same. The prescience is new altogether. I wonder..."
[22:41] * Wayland nods. "It's a mystery to me."
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

Corwin

[20:04] <Kotono> "In the last few decades magic has returned in force," He pauses to scribble a little more, "This is perhaps a new type of spell or incantation. At the very least it matches nothing I've seen before."
[20:07] <Wayland> "There's no incantation involved, I'm sure of that."
[20:08] <Kotono> "Curiouser and curiouser," he concludes, shaking his head back and forth, "How often can you perform these feats, Wayland? Once per day? Several times per day?"
[20:08] <Wayland> "A few times a day, usually."
[20:19] <Kotono> "Interesting." He closes the book, "Could you demonstrate your style to me now?"
[20:23] <Kotono> The rest of the day passes without trouble. The next dawn is cool and waiting, Branna red-eyed and smothering yawns as the caravan gets ready. "So how'd you enjoy the day, boss," he asks, wincing after those words.
[20:24] <Wayland> "It was quiet and mostly uneventful, you? You look like you had a bit much last night."
[20:25] <Kotono> "I lost count after awhile," Branna's answer is followed by him rubbing his forehead and wincing again.
[20:26] <Wayland> "Well, perhaps you shouldn't drink to excess then. Go grab yourself some water from the inkeeper, I'm sure he'll have some."
[20:27] <Kotono> "Are you kidding? It's fun," Branna shakes his head, "I'll survive. 'sides, the road to was quiet. Way back will be  asnap, right?"
[20:29] <Wayland> "We can only hope so, Branna."
[20:31] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[20:31] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 30." [1d100=30]
[20:32] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[20:32] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 28." [1d100=28]
[20:32] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[20:32] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 38." [1d100=38]
[20:32] <Kotono> roll 1d100
[20:32] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d100 and gets 22." [1d100=22]
[20:33] <Kotono> It's a peaceful trip back. Nothing really goes wrong, nothing unusual at all. At last you return to Balmuria, passing into the city. Mr. Slist comes forward and shakes your hand, "Here's to a good trip. That one went well."
[20:34] * Wayland returns the handshake. "Indeed. Glad there was no more trouble than necessary for you, Mr. Slist."
[20:39] <Kotono> After the handshake two caravanmen bring over a small box. "Payment's inside," he says, "I'll keep you in mind next time we need caravan protection."
[20:40] <Wayland> "We'd appreciate that. Maybe our reputation will help keep bandits away." Wayland grins.
[20:42] <Kotono> Branna grins as he hefts up the box. "Thanks," he says, starting to walk. Over his shoulder to Wayland, "So hey, no fighting and money to take away. That went pretty well."
[20:45] <Wayland> "We had a little bit of fighting in that bar, but no harm really done there. We came out of it alright, I think." Wayland says, walking next to Branna.
