Is it ever quite specified just what kind of game pai sho actually is? Is it based on a real one somewhere?

The kind of game is strategy.  But there is (surprisingly enough) no pai sho game.

They didn't even make up a cheap digital one for their flash page or anything.

My impression is it's inspired by Go and Mahjong.  It also appears to have a CCG element, where you actually gamble your tokens, so....

I'm not going to lie. I created a pandaren character in Warcraft with the name "irouh"
