We'll start with Detect Psionics, which does what it says on the box. Follow that up with Read Thoughts (which may or may not be wise, and will likely be immediately aborted. It'll give me a frame of reference for what I'm dealing with though), and then if I have the time and the stability for it, Psychic Chirurgery.

Psychic Chirurgery is as follows

You can remove any compulsions and charms affecting the subject. In fact, you can remove any instantaneous or permanent effect caused by a psychic power with psychic chirurgery. Unlike with aura alteration, these effects end or are negated as soon as this power is manifested, with no need for another saving throw.

You can remove all negative levels affecting the subject, regardless of how it lost those levels, restoring it to the highest level it had previously attained. Also, you can restore levels lost to energy drain or a similar effect if the level drain occurred within a number of hours equal to your manifester level.

You can also remove all psionic effects penalizing the subject's ability scores, heal all ability damage, and remove any ability drain affecting the subject. Psychic chirurgery negates all forms of insanity, confusion, the effect of such powers as microcosm, and so on, but it does not restore levels or Constitution points lost due to death.

There's supernatural power around Muirfinn, but you can't understand it. It's unlike anything you've ever seen before. The sheer evil of it is obvious even to a mere magic detection, the taint of vile energy that suggests that Muirfinn has been touched by vile ability damage.

You read Muirfinn's thoughts. He has none. His mind is perfectly unmoving, still and stagnant.

You aren't sure psychic chiurgery will work, but you're welcome to try if you want.

It simply doesn't work. It's like there's damage but it can't move it.

It's vile ability damage. You might be able to manage normal vile ability damage with it - you've never had reason to try and even if not, doing it on holy ground would take care of that problem anyway - but whatever Asmodeus did is beyond that as much as a solar is beyond a mere child.

'Asmodeus has done...something. To his mind. I'm not sure what. It's not your bog-standard vile damage. It's currently beyond me to remove, and as such we have no idea if Muirfinn is still in there, or if the soul has been wiped clean of personality. I might be able to do more if I had a few years of time to pick at it, but for now I simply lack the ability to remove or pry at this corruption. As it is, his mind is blank. Present, yes, but completely still. He's not even asleep, just...not there.' Tryll says to the group.

'A monument to the Lord of the Ninth's power,' Antenora thinks grimly. 'We will have to force them to cooperate with his recovery, this must be brought up.'

'I agree,' Mirajane says, 'This is meaningless if they've wiped him clean and if they think we'll accept that, they're foolish.'

'It would make the difference between saving his immortal soul or leaving it to be tortured by one of the worst things in the universe, personally,' Jaela mentally chides. 'That said, of course we'll insist on recovery.'

'Then let's do that,' Morniel says, 'Do you need aid in doing so, Jaela?'

'Just support me when the opportunity presents itself.'
