The shadows are semi living creatures, rising up to take the arrows for the dragons and protect them. Semi real things, semi living - and somehow taking the arrows.

The dragons rise up, flying up and before anyone can react, twin blasts of breath engulf everyone above, great waves of darkness spreading. The two shadow dragons rise up and up, moving in smooth tandem as - !!!
