Puzzle for the day

If there was only one unfaithful wife the husband would be the only man in town who did not know it.  Therefore, when the King revealed there was infidelity in the town, that husband would know his wife was the unfaithful one and behead her the next morning.

But no one did, so there must be at least two unfaithful wives.  If there were only two, both husbands would realize this on the second day, because they knew of one unfaithful wife, yet she was not executed on that first day.  Both husbands would execute their wives on the second day.

In the same way, if a husband knew of two unfaithful wives, but they weren't executed on the second day, he would know that his wife was also unfaithful and three wives would die on the third day.

This pattern would continue.  Each man whose wife was faithful knows there are 40 unfaithful women.  The men whose wives are unfaithful only know of 39 unfaithful women and would expect them to be executed on the 39th day.  When no women were executed, each cuckolded husband knows his wife is unfaithful, and on the 40th day, 40 men execute their wives.
