I contend that it's not silent because it modifies the sound of the a and is thus a split diphthong...

Its not completely silent. If you get rid of it it'll change how the word is pronounced.

The actual answer was no silent consonant (the correct answer was Dame), however whether that E can be counted as silent is somewhat dodgy.
Try pronouncing DAME, then DAM. At least in the UK those two are quite different.
Now try pronouncing KNIGHT and NIGHT, also KNAVE and NAVE and SCION and SION.  Again at least in the UK each word within the pairs are pronounced the same as the other word in the pair. Given that I can't conclude that E is silent. It may not be an explicit E sound at the end of the word but it DOES affect the pronounciation.
