Cutey Honey OAV 1

This is, as far as I know, the only one out.  It's a sort of remake of the classic Cutey Honey Flash series.  Directed by Anno, it's all done in a pseudo-retro style that's rather nice to see and goes great with the whole feeling of it.  It's fun, meant to be fun, and meant to be fun to watch.  And in that, it pretty much succeeds, avoiding seriousness at any point for continual low range humor and light ecchi comedy.  And that's both the good and bad of it.

It remains pretty light-hearted and humorous throughout, but pretty much never provides any real credence to the serious aspects by doing so.  It really significantly borderlines soft-core animated porn at points having Cutey Honey's clothes get removed pretty much for the majority of the episode.  The enemies, while all amusing, are for the large part just too absurd.  If this is your kind of thing, it's cool.  For me, I watched it twice, and was pleased twice, but more from the soft-corn porn (Which is admittingly nice eye-candy) then any sense of the story.

Story? Whatcha talking about Willis? Cutey Honey, while the first of its magical girl genre, was meant to be nothing but silliness with the story being more of a side thing. Taking this into account, Gainax did a great job of capturing the essence of the show and remaking it for our generation, even creating a trippy 60s-70ish soundtrack to add flavor to the show.

Something else that someone may want to take note for the more veteran anime fan is the fact that Anno himself is directing this series, taking the best from the two sides that Gainax has polarized into. (IE: The mindfuck team = Eva, She the Ultimate Weapon, etc; and the pervy team= Mahoromatic, Gunbuster, whathaveyou.)

Knowing all that, you can pretty easily tell what's what.

She, The Ultimate Weapon was not a Gainax series. Gonzo produced it.

You know, I never came back here.

I did eventually watch the rest of Re: Cutey Honey and while I think thte style changes towards the end were a bit much (I liked the more retro style they used at the beginning), I found the overall show quite watchable and enjoyable.  This is ignoring that it was virtually softcore porn with hundreds of naked women on camera at points.

The OAV is just short enough that it doesn't get tiresome, just long enough that it does reasonably address the villians and plot points that it put out.  This is something I'd genuinely recommend for anyone who likes sort of comedic/feelgood anime with lots of fanservice.
