In the first word, the number is the letter's postion in the alphabet.  So 6 is the 6th letter - F.

In the second word, subtract 1 from each number, the take the letter in that position in the alphabet.  So 2-1=1; A is the 1st letter of the alphabet.

In the third word, subtract 2, and so on.  Instead of negative numbers, wrap around based on position in the alphabet.  So in the 3rd word 2 - 2 positions = 26, which is Z.

That be not exactly a "simple substitution" (which is <number> = <letter>)

Bah.  Should've guessed when I could grab 'for' through direct substitution, 'sale' with some fiddling cryptogram style, and 'princess' by substitution - 5 letters.
