Miami Guns
Review of eps 1-4

Ah, the advantages of having a video chain (Media Play, in this case) going out of business: you can get cheap anime. In this case I picked up the DVD of a series that I saw the first 2 eps of at a convention.

Miami Guns is a humor oriented series centering around two characters: Yao Sakamoto, the ultra-hyper, violent, rich new police girl on the force who joined so she could enjoy car chases, shooting people, and engaging in acts of wanton destruction., and her serious, quiet (competent) partner, Lu Amano.

First off this is an absurd comedy, not meant to be taken seriously in any way shape or form. (The second episode is a recap of the background to the entire series to date ^_^) Each episode is self-contained, so there's no on-going theme. It's a parody of the buddy cop genre that pokes fun at a million things. Sort of a less manic, less humorous version of Excel saga. Then again, I've always considered Excel to be one of the best of its type of works.

First the good: It's manic enough to have a hundred jokes, which means the watcher will have a varying degree of humor work for them. Yao carries this thing with her psychotic, moronic, outlook on life where the world centers around her, and none may try to do otherwise.

The bad. There's so many jokes, some are sure to fall flat. And more importantly, the other bad thing is Lu, who is... well, boring, especially when compared to her partner. She's supposed to be sarcastic, but all too often she's simply boring. Luckily Yao can carry things.

What we have here is an overall humorous piece that, while not all of the humor is great, you should still get a chuckle or three out of it. I recommend it with a 6 out of 10. Not great, but definitely enjoyable, though I confess it might not be for everyone.
