004. "I have trained in the ways of the forest!"

[19:53] <Kotono> It is a forest path that winds on occasion, twisting back and forth.  You follow it for a good half hour, back and forth! As you do, Adrian falls in step of Afina. In a low voice, "Your kin are observing us," he murmurs, "Under the guise of invisibility."
[19:55] <Afina> Afina rolls her eyes. After her experience with that erinyes at the end of Lifasa, she's long since stopped relying on invisibility, and seen her skills improve for it. Casting see invisibility herself, she takes a look around, wondering what sort of fey would call this outer realm home.
[19:58] <Kotono> They are about - all above. They sit perched on branches or fluttering between trees. They are all watching, hair the color of burnished silver, beaten gold or sparkling platinum. Occasionally one points and giggles at a membmer of the party, or nudges another and starts whispering.
[19:59] <Jaela> Blissfully unaware of this all, Jaela merely follows her original course.
[20:02] <Afina> Speaking up loudly, Afina says for her companions as much as their watchers, "Most Courts rely on pixies to guard the edges of their territory, to gauge the intentions of interlopers. If displeased they'll see off weak ones with illusions and tricks, or lure strong seeming ones in towards more potent guardians of the forest. I've heard some test the virtue of people coming through their territory
[20:02] <Afina> as well, but that never happened in the Gloaming Forest."
[20:03] <Kotono> "So pixies are just the doormen?" Adrian cocks his head towards Afina, "How do they test the virtue of someone, anyway?"
[20:04] * Willim looks at Afina. "Wut now? Is pixies here?"
[20:04] <Ithea> "Is our next trial something involving them then, you think?" Ithea asks.
[20:04] <Jaela> "But this is Elysium," Jaela says to that, furrowing her brows. "If you're somehow here and not virtuous, it turns you into that."
[20:05] <Afina> "Tests of honesty - 'Did you drop this big sack of gold we just conveniently found?'" Afina hitches her voice high and shrugs, "Illusions of hurt animals... in some places where hunters roam freely there might even be real stricken animals to use. Things like that."
[20:05] <Jaela> "If it's the latter, we're in luck. I'm pretty decent at healing animals."
[20:06] <Kotono> Above Afina can see the fairies giggle, a few of them waggling fingers down at her. As one they start to fly ahead, leaving the party behind.
[20:07] <Jaela> "So where are the hurt animals?" Jaela asks expectantly a minute later, as none seem to appear before them.
[20:07] <Afina> "It seems I spoiled their fun," Afina notes, unconcerned. They haven't introduced themselves so she owes them no courtesy.
[20:07] <Ithea> "Maybe they heard you and went to prepare a new trial?"
[20:10] <Kotono> "They seem harmless enough," Adrian says, "Even when Mother provoked them, pixies weren't terribly dangerous by themselves. Now what they might bring back?"
[20:10] <Afina> "Or to tell someone else to take a turn," the fairy muses, continuing to fly at a constant pace, trailed by her floating disk. She does give Adrian an askance look at his dismissal of how dangerous her kind can be.
[20:12] <Kotono> He returns that look with a bland understanding, a short nod in retort. On a little further the party finds a clearing - it's a rough square, the grass trimmed and forest held at bay. In the center the hilt of a sword juts out from the ground, a great two handed sword impaled into the soil. The pixies are gathered above, a great swarm of them.
[20:14] <Jaela> "So is this a legendary sword in the stone setup," Jaela asks the resident fairy expert, "or a case of that 'don't steal our things' test?"
[20:16] <Afina> "The sword is too big for a pixie, but it could belong to someone else," Afina muses, flying a bit higher in the clearing but not enough to join the swarm. "Nixies and other aquatic fey prefer using swords in their tests anyway. Especially ones who really do guard powerful artifact weapons."
[20:16] * Willim blinks, idly tucking a thick strand of hair behind his right horn. "Does fairies need help getting sword from rock?"
[20:19] * Jaela mulls this over, before approaching the sword, grasping it by the hilt and attempting to draw it out of the soil.
[20:19] <Kotono> As Jaela touches the blade, one of the pixies clears her throat! In a booming, genderless voice she declares, "Strength is not a means of attack - no, it is a means of defense. To defend what is dear and good is a core principal of righteous might. I charge of you to defend this blade against the oncoming hordes! Further, do not reave a single life! To profane this glade with murder would be a

[20:20] <Jaela> "I could do that," Jaela agrees, happy that she was proven right. The way to get the fey to respond was to touch the blade after all!
[20:21] <Ithea> "Oncoming hordes? Hordes of what?" Ithea wonders outloud.
[20:21] <Afina> "Spring Court," Afina mutters to herself. Assuming they owe fealty to a sylvan court and not some random angel, anyway... Floating downwards she wriggles her fingers, glad she knows enough about subduing foes rather than killing them to overcome this test.
[20:21] <Kotono> "Defend the blade?" Adrian draws his blade of light, "If you so desire."
[20:22] <Kotono> As you stand there and talk, the forest around you is penetrated by ursine roars! From the forest they approach, two of them! Each one is as big as an overgrown ogre, a golden furred, soft faced bear! They approach from opposite sides, as if to wedge the party in between them! OOC: Init here.

[22:26] <Jaela> "You okay?" Jaela asks Adrian, taking a hand off the sword to tap his shoulder and convey another Heal. She returns her attention to the greatsword, trying a few practice swings with it. "Shiny."
[22:27] <Ithea> "He'll be fine," Ithea says pleasantly as she drops him once he's freed enough to stand up on his own.
[22:27] * Willim nods, watching Jaela swing the sword.
[22:28] <Kotono> "Thanks," Adrian manages, giving Ithea a withering look, "Pay attention! If that was a real battle I'd be dead!"
[22:28] <Kotono> It's a good, well balanced blade. It seems to be one that curves towards defense, naturally guiding her swings to parry.
[22:28] <Jaela> "Yeah, it kinda wasn't funny to mock him as he was getting horribly mock-killed by a tree," Jaela agrees, checking the blade for any enchantments.
[22:28] <Ithea> "Oh, pish, posh! You knew it wasn't a real battle," Ithea waves off his concern. "I'd have dropped it someplace safer if it was."

[22:29] * Hatbot --> "Jaela rolls 1d20+21 spellcraft after DM and gets 28." [1d20=7]
[22:29] <Ithea> "And hey, if he gets to make catty remarks, I think I can check how he likes some bark. Fair's fair."
[22:29] <Willim> "Hey," Willim says, turning to Adrian and shaking a clawed finger at him, "you be nice to cat lady. Was all in good fun. You is fine."
[22:30] <Ithea> "See? He gets me!" Ithea exclaims as she pats Willim in the back. "Good boy!"
[22:30] * Willim nods agreeably.
[22:30] <Afina> "I'm sure it won't happen again," Afina comments distractedly, starting to slowly fly onwards in the same direction as before, her disc following.
[22:31] <Kotono> "Someone's not getting any of the salmon I have," Adrian mutters, rubbing his chin now, following Afina.
[22:31] <Jaela> "Huh. Not a weapon you can lose in a fight. Neat," Jaela muses, making it disappear with a flick of her wrist.
[22:32] * Ithea just grins at Adrian, feeling like she's won that conversation.
[22:32] <Ithea> Turning to Jaela, Ithea asks, "Anything that's meant to help us find our angelic friend, or just some unrelated pixie fun?"
[22:32] <Willim> "Is okay." Willim says. "Can catch own meat, now that animals about."
[22:33] <Jaela> "What, the sword? Pretty sure it's got nothing to do with Galariel whatsover."
[22:33] * Ithea nods. "Just checking."
[22:33] <Kotono> "Is it magical?" Adrian pipes up, "Or just a pretty looking blade?"
[22:33] * Ithea moves on after Afina after Jaela's confirmation, seeing no more reason to stick around.
[22:34] <Jaela> "It's a sword that can never be disarmed. Nice, innit?" Jaela asks Adrian, catching up.
[22:34] <Kotono> "All without having to bother with a locked gauntlet," Adrian says, "Useful, if not spectacular."
[22:36] <Jaela> "It's really what you'd call a specialty weapon," she readily agrees, nodding. "If you're all about defense, it's pretty decent! But if you're on the defense, you probably don't want to specialize in greatswords to begin with. But it all makes sense when you consider that the pixies who had it are too small to use it effectively."
[22:37] <Kotono> You travel the rest of the day. As dusk falls you come out of the forest path. Ahead of you is a small lake, fed by a few forest streams. A ridge above drops a river into it, a gorgeous waterfall crashing into the lake. Fish leap around it, rainbows dancing amid the waterfall's plunge. The water has a faintly golden cast to it, seeming to well up from the bottom.
[22:37] <Afina> "The whole point of the test was that strength was for defence," Afina turns her head back over her shoulder. "Giving us the Sudden Death Murdersword afterwards would defeat the point."
[22:38] <Jaela> "Oh, sure," Jaela agrees. "I think a longsword fits better, though. You could use it with a shield and everything."
[22:39] <Jaela> "So, uh, tell me it's not swimming time again."
[22:39] <Afina> Upon reaching this scenic spot, Afina stops. "We should camp here. I'm going to go for a swim before eating," she declares, going over to the edge of the water and sitting on her disc before she starts taking her clothes off.
[22:39] * Willim had already begun wading into the water, reaching for fish.
[22:40] * Jaela pouts. "And I asked not to say it, too."
[22:40] <Kotono> "If you're going to be modest, you do know I can see the invisible," Adrian pipes up, going to sit and put his sword down and take off his armor.
[22:40] <Kotono> The fist do not resist at all. They simply leap, extrodinarily easy to catch.
[22:41] * Willim collects several fishes, bundling six or seven up in his large hands and heading back to shore.
[22:42] <Afina> Afina doesn't react to Adrian, nor does she bother turning herself invisible even when she takes off her top. "Look or don't, I don't care," she retorts ambivalently. She knows she's no nymph anyway, so she doubts the sight would be too titillating. Once naked she dives into the water anyway and is soon obscured for the most part.
[22:43] <Kotono> Adrian shrugs his shoulders and lies back, "One day down. At least it was a profitable one."
[22:44] <Jaela> "Maybe we'll get dream stew again tonight," Jaela muses. It is a struggle, but she eventually decides to remove her armor for the night. "Want me to save some for you?"
[22:44] <Ithea> "His mother would probably not let him eat any if you did," Ithea comments as she removes her own armor for the night.
[22:45] * Willim carefully starts a fire and begins cooking the fish! "We has fish tonight."
[22:45] <Jaela> "If I can sleep without my armor on, Adrian could sleep without his mother for a change?"
[22:45] * Ithea claps lightly at Willim's words and smiles. "And I'll bet it'll be more delicious than salmon!"
[22:50] * Willim shrugs. He tosses the fish into an iron pot and lets them simmer. "Fish is meat. Meat is good."
