Boku Wa Imoto Ni Koi wo Saru (Or why sharing the same womb with your twin sister doesn't mean you should be trying to get into hers)

My, I don't think I've seen anything this incestuous since Oedipus Rex. However Sophocles didn't write this one. For one thing, at 45 minutes this is a lot shorter, and this is angsty, not a tragedy.  This is sort of a romance genre one, the only thing setting this apart (in a disturbing way) is that it involves a twin brother and sister falling for one another.

Now at the age of 15, Iori, the brother, is falling for his younger (by five minutes) sister, Iku and is understandably stressed about it (perhaps he shouldn't be sleeping in the same room with her in their bunk beds). For the next forty minutes were treated to something that's really wrong, but not really treated like it is. This would be fine if it was a hentai anime, since any genre with she-males and tentacle beast amore isn't meant to be taken seriously anyway. In any case this 45 minute block of time quickly deals with the conflict over their incestuous feelings for one another, with angsting over the resolution of their decision, and a couple of bed scenes that don't show anything, which is probably for the best.

In all honesty, there isn't much to this, and the subject matter (taken seriously in this case) makes me twitchy. It's so short, there isn't much that can be done with it. The cast is fairly two dimensional, and I can't say I cared much for the ending. It felt like the creators were just trying to throw a twist on a standard romance genre anime. Music wasn't bad, animation okay.

Basing this score on what the anime was trying to accomplish, 4 out of 10. Subject matter would make this a 1 out of 10 for most, though.

Gee, and I was going to try to find more upbeat anime. Maybe I should do a review of Armor Hunter Mellowlink, even if there's still two episodes to go

Don't watch "Papa to Kiss in the Dark," ever. ;)  Stay away from Koi Kaze too, eh?

Okay, I'll admit it: the hardcore romantic in me enjoyed this show.  Not that I'm into incest particularly, so much as I'm a sucker for the forbidden-love-but-we'll-do-it-anyway-consequences-be-damned kind of stories (just don't tell on me, okay?).

Here's the thing: incest shows up in a LOT of yaoi and other female-audience-oriented adult themed pieces, for the exact reason I stated above: we like that love conquers all, and we love it when guys love girls (or guys) so passionately that they're willing to risk everything to be with them, etc.

Since I'm entirely too cynical (a cynical romantic, I know) to imagine that level of passion anywhere in my life, a show like this-- or the contents of a yaoi manga, or whatever --exists to sort of offer an outlet for that kind of thing.

That's my theory, anyway, and I'm aware that it makes a broad sweeping generalization about women that isn't true for everyone, etc.
