[16:06] <@Carthrat> <->
[16:14] <@Carthrat> Sigmundr enters the compound that holds the 'Temple of Tempus'- more like a barracks, really, 'soldiers' doing streches, exercises and training in a large courtyard, shouted at by a hulking trainer, who carries a large stick. Around the courtyard is a C-shaped building, the cathedral proper just across it from you.
[16:18] * @Sigmundr circles the the courtyard, taking interest in the training, and pausing for a few moments to over-look the training and nodding at the trainer, before moving on, but keeping his gaze lingering on the training, attempting to give the 'recruits' some incentive.
[16:18] * @Sigmundr continues his way to the Cathedral proper, as he does this.
[16:20] <@Carthrat> The recruits are just as likely common men and women who saught basic martial skills, but either way, they do take note of Sigmundr's stare. On entering the cathedral, he's once again struck by the contrast between it and the rest of the temple complex; though it has emblems and statues of knights and the like, it still seems more like a traditional church; a row of pews and an altar.
[16:20] <@Carthrat> At the altar, two men are speaking; one you recognize as the Captain of this temple, a Kyle Turnbolt.
[16:22] * @Sigmundr approaches the altar, keeping his distance from the two and dropping to a knee before it, setting his Warhammer on the ground in front of him, the head resting on the ground, and both hands folded over the haft, and lowers his head, murmuring a prayer to Tempus before standing to be acknowledged by the two.
[16:23] * Retrieving #evildunes modes...
[16:24] <@Carthrat> "...oh, Sigmundr," says Turnbolt, glancing at you. "See, Sergeant? This is the sort of man we need more of," he continues. "Tempus be with you, Sigmundr."
[16:24] <@Sigmundr> "May Tempus guide your strikes true, Sir. If you have time, Captian, I would speak to you."
[16:25] <@Carthrat> "I can give a moment to you," he replies. "Sergeant, you may go." The sergeant, a red-cloaked man carrying a broad-bladed battle-axe, nods, glancing you over with piercing eyes before he bows and leaves.
[16:26] * @Sigmundr snaps a fist over his heart, and the seal of Tempus on his armor, before speaking.
[16:27] <@Sigmundr> "Sir, I recently encountered a.. job.. That I believe might be of interest to the Temple."
[16:27] <@Carthrat> "Continue," he replies. Even as a captain, this one doesn't wear armour.. indeed, only a light shirt. He doesn't even carry a weapon.
[16:29] <@Sigmundr> "An individual in the Mages Guild, one Calenstat, was looking to hire out work to retrieve a spellbook that was stolen from him by his apprentice.. Normally I would not consider such work to be a suitable fight, but I've been interested in going against a mage of late.."
[16:30] <@Carthrat> "Testing your wits as well as your hammer?" remarks the Captain, starting to walk down the aisle of pews. "A mage is a challenging foe, but a clever cleric is ably suited."
[16:31] <@Sigmundr> "While meeting with Calenstat, I was introduced to another who wanted the same work.. We spoke, and agreed to work togeather, along with some friends of hers. Once we had gathered, we set out for the apprentice.. Who had holed up in a lighthouse some days travel from here. A penchant he had for traps, though we made our way well into the lighthouse despite that.."
[16:32] <@Sigmundr> "This is where the Church might take interest... While there, we ended up, due to the efforts of my companions, speaking to the apprentice.. His explination might be cause for some worry, Sir."
[16:32] <@Carthrat> Turnbolt pauses. "The mind of a mage is sharp and witty," he remarks. "I would hesitate to believe what he says.. but go on."
[16:34] <@Sigmundr> "According to his story, Calenstat has come into posession of a powerful Domination spell. Which he has used often, apparently. According to his apprentice, Calenstat has used this spell to sway people of power in this town to his side. Of note, according to the apprentice, people in the guard and even some in the Temple of Mysteria.."
[16:35] <@Carthrat> "It's difficult to dominate a cleric," replies Turnbolt, offhandedly. "Remarkable that he could dominate one of Mystra and not be caught in the act."
[16:35] <@Sigmundr> "If he can use this spell on their clerics, Sir, it is possible he has used it to gain an agent in our ranks as well. The Temples of Tempus have great strength of arms.. Such would be an asset in any stretch for power."
[16:37] <@Carthrat> "A worrying accusation, in all cases," goes on Turnbolt. "I will deign to check upon our ranks.. discretely. Even one sergeant misled so could command a number of soldiers.. soldiers which we can ill afford to lose in these troubled times."
[16:37] <@Sigmundr> "I would not be overly worried about our higher members, Sir, but even the lowest of our ranks could be the nudge that tips the scales.."
[16:39] <@Carthrat> "It's good that you've told me this," nods Turnbolt, stopping in front of the door to the cathedral. "However, you should take care to keep your inquiries along these lines secret. There's no telling how many he's dominated.. nor who it could be. Best it would be to do in the mage so that his control is broken.. if it exists."
[16:42] <@Sigmundr> "Indeed, Sir. I hesistate to include you in that number, but with such a thing as this, I can not dismiss the possibility. I would ask that you bring in a Cleric from outside of this Temple to make the checks. I realize this is overstepping my bounds by a large margin, Sir, but as you stated... There's no telling who could be under his power."
[16:43] <@Carthrat> Turnbolt coughs. "It'll take some time to get another cleric sent out, and if members of our church are dominated, it will be difficult to conceal... hmph. I will look into the matter personally."
[16:45] <@Sigmundr> ".. Aye, Sir. Again, I mean no disrespect, but infiltration of our ranks is not something any of our number can take lightly. Many battles have been lost to the betrayal of the few to the great. I pray Tempus will guide you true through this, Sir."
[16:45] * @Sigmundr snaps his fist over his heart with an audable clack in salute again.
[16:46] <@Carthrat> "Aye. Nobody will be exempt from my divinations," he replies, thumping his own hand over his chest.
[16:48] <@Sigmundr> ".. Sir, that brings something to my attention.. I have come into contact with this Mage personally already. I would ask that you test me first, to assuage any doubt as to my role in this. As you said, Sir, none shall be exempt."
[16:49] <@Carthrat> "A wise precaution, though, would you bring it before me if you were truly with him?" remarks Turnbolt, raising one hand. "If you wish, I will do so, but I hardly see it necessary."
[16:50] <@Sigmundr> "Indeed, Sir, but if the higher Clergy require a report, it would be best if all involved had been checked, to close the door on any doubt."
[16:51] <@Carthrat> "Then, let us do that right now," replies the cleric, his hand glowing with magical energy!
[16:52] * @Sigmundr nods and stands fast, locking his eyes forwards and setting his weight to attention, awaiting the spell and testing.
[16:53] <@Carthrat> Magic washes over you, followed by the cleric's steely gaze. At last... "..I see you still have that book," he remarks, jauntily. "But your mind appears to be your own."
[16:54] <@Sigmundr> "Thank you, Sir. And indeed, I still carry the Writs of Tempus with me. They have protected enough times to never leave my side, Sir."
[16:54] <@Carthrat> "You can dispense with the formality," remarks Turnbolt, clapping you on the shoulder. "We don't stand for it too much around here."
[16:55] * @Sigmundr relaxes his stance and shoulders and grins slightly.
[16:55] <@Sigmundr> "Very well, Captian.. So, how has the fresh crop of recruits been fairing?"
[16:56] <@Sigmundr> Captain*
[16:56] <@Carthrat> "Better, since they started eating properly," replies Turnbolt, walking outside. "They're mostly low nobles and the like. Fighting is quite stylish, and a few decided they'd prefer to use real weapons, rather than rapiers."
[16:57] * @Sigmundr snorts.
[16:58] <@Sigmundr> "That means there are some who are still using those pathetic things. I still say we should take a hammer to all of those sorry excuses for blades. Give them all a real weapon, and have them work extra for pay to buy themselves a real one."
[16:59] <@Carthrat> "I wouldn't disregard them completely," adds Turnbolt. "But, certainly, there are better choices for serious fighting."
[17:00] <@Sigmundr> "Mmm.. They're not totally useless, no. They are fast, true, but.. Eh.. I dislike them."
[17:01] <@Carthrat> "Suited to those with quick wrists, but not stronger biceps," goes on Turnbolt. "Sneaks favour them... no wonder nobles do."
[17:01] * @Sigmundr chuckles.
[17:02] <@Sigmundr> "How true, Captain. How true. Are there any duties you would have me fill? I know not when my companions would wish to go against Calenstat, and after the travel back from the lighthouse.. I find myself having had too much time on my hands lately.
[17:02] <@Sigmundr> ""
[17:03] <@Carthrat> "I think it's best that you keep a low profile, until this one is dealt with," replies Turnbolt. "I dare not risk someone who is assured of innocence in this matter."
[17:04] <@Sigmundr> "Pfah. More boredom then. The most distasteful thing of battle.. The hurry only to find yourself waiting for the time to act."
[17:05] <@Carthrat> "Better than a sword through the ribs," replies Turnbolt. "Still, it's as you say." He claps you on the back again. "I will begin investigations immediately. In the meantime, get some rest."
[17:07] <@Sigmundr> "Aye, Sir.. After this incident solves its self, I would speak to you of my position in the Temple ranks. No many worth his weight strays from the prospect of advancement."
[17:07] <@Sigmundr> many/man*
[17:14] <@Carthrat> "Indeed," replies Turnbolt. "Should this investigation prove fruitful, I will no doubt have something to give yo."
[17:15] <@Sigmundr> "Thank you, Sir. I will be off, then.. Perhaps I will drop my armor and practice a bit.. Either way, may Tempus favor you, Captain."
[17:15] * @Sigmundr snaps a final salute, and waits for final dismissal before turning to leave..
[17:16] <@Carthrat> "On your way," he replies, turning to head back into the cathedral.
[17:16] * @Sigmundr turns and heads for the Cleric barracks.
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

[23:52] <@Carthrat> <->
[23:54] <@Carthrat> Nightime in the Temple of Tempus, a certain cleric makes ready for bed. His room, on the second story of the barracks compound is spartan, containing a small shrine, a bed, and a desk. A chest to store your belongings in is also present... the door itself possesses a good, solid lock, and the window is open, letting in the warm night air.
[23:55] <@Carthrat> It's closed with wooden shutters; if it's shut, no light gets in.
[23:56] * Carthrat sets mode: +o Sigmundr
[23:56] * @Sigmundr enters and shucks his armor, placing it in an ordered set at the foot of his bed, and slipping into a light shirt as he locks the door.
[23:57] <@Carthrat> The lock clicks oddly, and doesn't completely close- it's certainly not going to stop your door from opening.
[23:57] * @Sigmundr turns back towards the bed, setting his warhammer beside it, handle to the sky and sets the shutters to let a bit of air in.
[23:58] * @Sigmundr looks at the door, and decides to prop his armor against it, under the idea that if its opened, it should hopefully make enough noise to wake him.
[23:59] <@Carthrat> The parts of your armour will certainly make quite the clatter if someone opens the door. Especially the helmet.
Session Time: Sun May 28 00:00:01 2006
[00:00] * @Sigmundr sets the gauntlets and boots of his armor on the window sill, as a precaution as well, and then, setting his Tome on the desk, enters his bed for the night.
[00:03] <@Carthrat> So your drift off into the land of slumber... as you sleep, you see in your dreams a face. Fine elven features, but darker than usual for the pale fair folk.. no drow, but his lips twist in a cruel smile, and a scar runs down through one eye. The clangs of battle echo in your mind, the thrust and clinks of noble rapiers, then mighty hooves and the rush of lances.. then, in the world that's all to real, the clattering of armour, the noise of wakefulness.
[00:03] <@Carthrat> the clattering of armour, the noise of wakefulness.
[00:04] * @Sigmundr snaps his hand over for the haft of his warhammer as he springs to his feet, dropping into a defensive stance.
[00:04] <@Sigmundr> "Hold! Name thyself, or feel my wrath!"
[00:05] <@Carthrat> Looking as surprised as you'd think, a cowled, black-cloaked figure stands in your door... in your door? In your wall? His entire body seems to be half-melded with the surrounding room, the only hints to his real presence his face- a white-faced, narrow-eyed young man, and two glittering daggers. (More)
[00:06] <@Carthrat> A sickly feeling wells up in your stomach, and for a minute all you can see is a thousand blinking eyes, madly darting everywhere and staring at you, around you, through you- before you snap back to reality. The figure growls, a black sound, and rushes forward to attack!

[00:08] <@Carthrat> OOC: Awfulness today. It's your turn!
[00:09] <@Carthrat> OOC: The man is very hard to see, but you think you can make out his body.
[00:10] * @Sigmundr bellows at the top of his lungs, calling out to the power of Tempus.
[00:10] <@Sigmundr> "Tempus! Bring me light so that my strikes may be true!"
[00:10] <@Carthrat> OOC: You're casting.. light? :D
[00:10] <@Sigmundr> OOC: Yep.
[00:10] <@Sigmundr> OOC: Target is my Warhammer.
[00:11] <@Carthrat> Your warhammer emits a bright light, your opponent recoiling, seemingly blinded by it! You can see him in full figure now, his body clad entirely in back, and he seems to feel real pain from this light. Nonetheless, he steps forward, rapidly closing the distance between you and lashing out with his deadly daggers against your unarmoured body!

[00:12] <@Carthrat> It rips through your chest, the blades humming slightly and shedding a slight blackness, even in your noble light!
[00:15] * @Sigmundr roars as he slams his warhammer into the ground, calling on the power of his God with a roar of, "TEMPUS, LET THE ENEMIES OF YOUR CHILDREN HEAR YOUR ANGER!" OOC: Casting Sound Burst.

[00:19] <@Carthrat> A mighty blast, a thunderclap, the sound of a tempest ripping through your room emnated from your hammer! Paper and bits of dust and the blankets fly around the room, and your erstwhile opponent reels, some blood leeking out his ears from your mighty blow!
[00:19] <@Carthrat> OOC: Your turn.. again. >_>
[00:21] * @Sigmundr snarls as he calls to Tempus again, growling out, "Stand fast and face thy punishment, fool!" OOC: Casting Hold Person.
[00:21] <@Carthrat> OOC: Good grief.

[00:21] <@Carthrat> OOC: Paaased.
[00:22] <@Carthrat> The rogue resists your magic, somehow, shaking off the effects of that terrible burst of sound! The calls of other clerics and soldiers can be heard throughout the temple, and your assaliant glances behind him worriedly.. but decides to attack you once again, his nimble daggers heading straight towards your heart!

[00:22] <@Carthrat> Another visceral wound, but your thief blanches and runs away when he sees you recover, not wanting to waste another second here! OOC: Attack of opportunity on him as he runs back through your door.
[00:24] <@Sigmundr> Roll d20+8
[00:24] <@Carthrat> OOC: smallcase go
[00:24] <@Sigmundr> roll d20+8

[00:24] <@Sigmundr> roll d8+3
[00:24] * +Hatbot --> "Sigmundr rolls d8+3 and gets 6."12 [d8=3]
[00:25] <@Carthrat> Your blow slugs the thief on the side of the head! He staggers as he runs towards the door, vanishing around the corner! OOC: Persuing, even with your wounds?
[00:25] <@Sigmundr> OOC: After grabbing the tome, yes.
[00:25] <@Carthrat> OOC: That's a couple of actions, you won't be able to attack him if you grab it, though you can still run after him.
[00:26] <@Sigmundr> OOC: Ehh.. Yeah, I'll just run after him.
[00:27] <@Carthrat> OOC: Describe it. Remember, you can swing that hammer two-handed for extra damage (1.5 * your strength bonus instead of 1 * str.)
[00:28] * @Sigmundr charges through the door, gripping the haft of his hammer in both hands, and to his left side, ready for an upwards strike, chasing after the assassin, intent on bringing him low.
[00:29] <@Carthrat> The furtive figure is running fast! Now outside, you can see the dead bodies of a couple of Tempus guards, throats slit and spilling fresh blood across the corridor...
[00:29] <@Carthrat> OOC: Make your mighty attack.
[00:31] <@Sigmundr> roll d20+8
[00:31] * +Hatbot --> "Sigmundr rolls d20+8 and gets 15."12 [d20=7]

[00:32] * +Hatbot --> "Sigmundr rolls d8+4 and gets 8."12 [d8=4]
[00:33] <@Carthrat> The shadowy figure goes flying sprawling across the ground as your hammer blow cracks his skull! He twitches a moment, before lying still...
[00:36] * @Sigmundr approaches the prone body werily and kicks the blades away from him before grabbing his arms and twisting them behind his back, pinning him to the ground with Sigmundr's full weight into the small of his back.
[00:36] <@Sigmundr> "Guards! To the Cleric Barracks! I have a prisoner, bring bindings!"
[00:37] * @Sigmundr bellows at the top of his lungs.
[00:38] <@Carthrat> Your wounds start to ache as the fire of battle slowly leaves you, your ruined nightshirt now soaked with blood. In less than 20 seconds, guards rush in (though they lack bindings), and stare at you, angry faces gleaming. "There are several corpses leading towards this room," one says, darkly. "This one will be executed for this.."
[00:38] * @Sigmundr then turns back to the man, focusing on him and calling to Tempus for the weakest healing spell he has..
[00:38] <@Carthrat> OOC: CURE MINOR WOUNDS
[00:38] <@Sigmundr> OOC: Converting Resistance to Cure Minor Wounds.
[00:39] <@Carthrat> The man's wounds seal up- a little. They're not bleeding anymore, but you inflicted a couple of terrific blows on him, no doubt about that.
[00:39] <@Carthrat> One of the guards glance at you. "Take care of yourself before you take care of this scum, sir," one says, growling it out. "He'll not live past tomorrow night, I've no doubt."
[00:40] <@Sigmundr> "Execution will indeed be his fate, but first we must question him. Assassins do not act on their own orders, usually. Someone has hired him, and I intend to find out who wishes my death."
[00:41] <@Carthrat> "Indeed," replies the guard. "We don't have cells in the temple, though. Shall we take him to the city guard?"
[00:42] <@Sigmundr> "Aye, take him there. However, you are to have three other of those loyal to Tempus stand watch over him as well as the city guards. We may be using their cells, but his crime was against *our* Temple. Make that clear to them."
[00:42] <@Sigmundr> "I will have relief sent to you, as well. I must speak to the Captain, first, however."
[00:43] <@Sigmundr> ".... Make sure his bound in such a way that he can not move. Carry him if you must."
[00:43] <@Carthrat> "It will be done," replies the guard, starting to drag the man way. "Hell'l pay for this, mark my words... of course, the captain will be here any-" The man himself rounds the corner, accompanied by a quartet of armoured soldiers. "Sigmundr! So he was after you," he says.
[00:43] <@Sigmundr> he is bound*

[00:44] <@Sigmundr> "Aye, Captain. A moment, I am bleeding."
[00:44] * @Sigmundr grins wryly at the Captain as he begins his spell on himself.
[00:45] <@Carthrat> The captain nods, looking over you.. sternly, worriedly? It's hard to tell. "Of course."
[00:45] <@Sigmundr> OOC: Converting Silence to Cure Moderate Wounds.
[00:45] <@Carthrat> OOC: Sure thing, roll it up

[00:47] <@Carthrat> "I fear I'll be getting no sleep tonight," the captain remarks, as the two guards walk past him, lugging along the captive assassin.
[00:47] * @Sigmundr sighs in relief as the power flows through him and turns to the Captain.
[00:48] <@Sigmundr> "Aye, sir. An assassin in the Temple and our guards murdered? Vengence shall not wait for the weary, I think. Though, I can not doubt that it is connected to the matter of the Mage, Sir."
[00:50] <@Carthrat> "Possibly... though, it's not impossible that the target had some grudge against you," replies the Captain. "After all, it's known that you've travelled far, and you've fought your share of battles. An old enemy, perhaps?"
[00:52] <@Sigmundr> "It is possible, Sir. But the timing of it is suspect. The night of my return and revealing the plan? Seems more likely an effort to silence me before I bring the plot to light."
[00:52] <@Carthrat> "Truth," he replies, nodding. "Think carefully- who would know of your involvement?"
[00:53] <@Sigmundr> Beyond my companions, the only one who has been told, is you, Sir."
[00:55] <@Carthrat> The captain frowns. "The secret is out now in any case. Explanations will be wrought from that man... dammit. We'll need to tighten security." He puts a fist through the wall. "Damn! I wanted to find out who we could trust, but.. not like this."
[00:59] <@Sigmundr> "Sir... With all respect due, I believe circumstances has brought a time where you must step away from this. I can not, in good concience, allow you to continue the investigation, under your own power. Evidence and circumstance names you suspect, Sir, and to allow a logical, and open, suspect to conduct an investigation into such is pure folly."
[01:00] <@Sigmundr> "I ask that you step down, for now, and call for the Higher Clergy to send an investigation team, and allow the City Guards to accompany our own on patrols of the grounds, along with locking down all personel until the team arrives."
[01:00] <@Carthrat> The captain frowns, pausing a moment... before his eyes glaze over, and he lashes out at you with a mighty two-handed blow, his fists forming a virtual tidal wave of force as they blow into you!
[01:00] <@Carthrat> roll 1d20+12
[01:00] * +Hatbot --> "Carthrat rolls 1d20+12 and gets 20."12 [1d20=8]

[01:00] * +Hatbot --> "Carthrat rolls 1d10+4 and gets 6."12 [1d10=2]
[01:02] <@Carthrat> The guards behind him start, caught totally off-guard by the captains action! The captain himself forms a strange stance, boulder-like fists curled in front of his body, ready to strike against with lethal accuracy!

[01:10] <@Carthrat> OOC: yay improvised grappling
[01:11] <@Sigmundr> OOC: heh.
[01:11] <@Carthrat> A guard grabs the captains hand and yanks it behind his body, the man twisting out the way of other reaching arms!
[01:11] <@Carthrat> OOC: Your turn.
[01:12] * @Sigmundr growls and swings his hammer, two handed once more, in an attempt to deal enough damage for the guards to overpower him.

[01:14] <@Sigmundr> OOC: 25.
[01:15] <@Carthrat> Your powerful blow smashes the captain right in the face! A lesser man would be dead instantly- but this one sufferes only a multiude of hideous, disfiguring wounds as you break his nose and jaw! He goes limp in the guards hands, the soldier staring in a sort of shock, at what you and he just did.
[01:16] * @Sigmundr steps forward, ignoring the guards for the moment and hastily casts a spell of healing. OOC: converting Read Magic.
[01:17] <@Carthrat> The face still looks really ugly, but bits of it are no longer falling off. You think. The guards seem semi-fearful, glancing at you worriedly. "Sir?" one says, totally unsure of what to do next.
[01:18] <@Sigmundr> "Guards, detain him in with the City Watch as well. Seperate cells. Four of our guards on him, and four of the City Watch, as well. One of you bring the Temple Sergants here, *now.*"
[01:19] <@Sigmundr> "The same count of Guards for the assassin. Have our men who go to stand watch send the City Guard Captain here, as well."
[01:19] <@Carthrat> "Alright," one says, three dragging away the body of the captain, while one runs off in search of a seargent. Strangely, you're left on your own, now...
[01:20] * @Sigmundr sighs and slumps a bit, running a hand through his greying hair before calling upon Tempus for strength and healing once more..
[01:20] <@Sigmundr> OOC: Converting Bane.
[01:20] <@Sigmundr> roll 1d8+4
[01:20] * +Hatbot --> "Sigmundr rolls 1d8+4 and gets 7."12 [1d8=3]
[01:21] <@Carthrat> It's a few minutes before one of the temple sergeants shows up, his armour put on hastily and his longsword strapped to his waist. "You'd better have a damn good story to tell, Sigmundr," he says, though his heart isn't in it.
[01:22] * @Sigmundr slumps against the wall before speaking.
[01:23] <@Sigmundr> "Indeed.. It will wait for the other Sergants to arrive, though. It is not a story I will enjoy telling, and wish to tell it as few times as possible.
[01:23] <@Sigmundr> "
[01:25] <@Carthrat> "Aye, that sounds like it'd be best," he replies, grimly. "They're in the cathedral now. Sounds like we'd best be heading down there." Without another word, he turns around and starts walking to the said building..
[01:25] <@Sigmundr> "Hold. I would retrieve my armor first. I have been in too many battles in one night to willingly risk going without it again."
[01:26] <@Carthrat> "A wise idea," replies the sergeant, nodding. "Yell if you need my sword, though."
[01:27] * @Sigmundr pushes off the wall and enters his room, and straps his armor back on, attaching his warhammer and Tome in their places, then heads back out to the Sergant again.
[01:27] <@Carthrat> He's still there, standing straight-backed and alert.
[01:28] <@Sigmundr> "Sergant, forgive this, but.. What is your name, Sir? I have yet to have time to meet the rest of Clerics here, and am unfamilar with you."
[01:28] * @Sigmundr heads off towards the Cathedral, waiting for the Sergant to follow along next to him.
[01:29] <@Carthrat> "Harken," replies the Sergeant, gruffly. "Don't have a need for any other name, so.. just Harken." In a short time you're once again gathered in the cathedral, two other armoued figures, dressed in the livery of Tempus. They nod to you as you approach.
[01:29] <@Carthrat> "Alright, let's hear it." Harken doesn't waste time with a preamble, the three sergeants gathered around you.
[01:30] * @Sigmundr nods.
[01:32] <@Sigmundr> "As you know, I am Sigmundr Ingvinr. Days ago, I approached a Mage by the name of Calenstat about an offer of work he had posted.. Upon my meeting him, there was another party who was interested in the same. He revealed to us that his apprentice had.. 'Gone rouge' so to speak, and had left to a lighthouse a few days travel from the city, carrying his master's spellbook. Calenstat hired us to retrieve it."
[01:35] <@Sigmundr> "Upon leaving the meeting, I agreed with the other interested party, who goes by the name of Maz, to work togeather in this. I met her companions and we set off after the apprentice. Upon our confrontation with him, he revealed the reason he left his master.. According to him, Calenstat had aquired a Domination spell of significant power and was using it to gain agents inside the local government.. And Temples."
[01:37] <@Sigmundr> "I confronted the Captain with this information, and requested he start an investigation, which he agreed to.. However, earlier tonight an assassin attempted to kill me, here on Temple grounds, in my sleep. After subduing him, the Captain approached and we agreed to have him sent to the City Watch for holding, with a number of our own men standing guard over him, along with the City Watch."
[01:38] <@Sigmundr> "After they had departed, the Captain questioned me as to whom else I had told the supposed plot to.. As I told him, he was the only one I had revealed it to, outside of the group I had traveled with. With the timing of the assassin being so suspect, and him being the only one inside the Temple who knew about it..."
[01:39] <@Sigmundr> "I asked him to step down from the investigation and lock down the temple grounds and augment our patrols with people from the City Watch, as well as detaining all Temple personel inside Temple Grounds. After asking this he.. Attacked me. Outright, with no words of warning."
[01:41] <@Sigmundr> "In the.. Fight.. I called for the Guards to detain him.. Which they attempted to after some understandable hesistation.. I managed a.. Lucky and devistating strike on him, and stabilized him with a spell of healing, and had the Guards transport him to the City Watch cells as well.. After which, Sergant Harken approached me."
[01:42] * @Sigmundr finishes speaking, and awaits the questions of the Sergants..
[01:44] <@Carthrat> "I spoke to one of those guards," remarks Harken. "He certainly backs up your story about the attack... and the dead bodies, along with the assassin, remove much suspicion from you."
[01:44] <@Carthrat> (More.)
[01:45] <@Sigmundr> "Ah, a last thing.. I had asked the Captain to contact the Higher Clergy and send a team to investigate the plot, as well. That was the reason for detaining all personel.. It would not do to have the agent, or agents, flee before they arrived.."
[01:45] <@Carthrat> "But it's a very serious claim. The captain has incredible strength of will... not to mention that domination spells, as I know of them, can be resisted even after the initial casting. I know of Calenstat- he's a potent mage.. but could he really dominate the captain?"
[01:46] * @Sigmundr shrugs.
[01:47] <@Sigmundr> "I know not if he could, but his actions are more than suspect, you must agree.. There is also the chance of the Domination spell not being needed.. Natrually, I hesistate to claim these charges. They are very serious, as you said.. But the days' actions seem to warrent them."
[01:49] <@Carthrat> "I do agree." Harken snorts. "The captain is a very controlled figure. Attacking you for insubordination isn't something he would do... hmph. I'm going to order the entire temple locked down," he announces. "Nobody will be coming in or out until this is sorted out... yourself excepted."
[01:50] * @Sigmundr snaps his fist to his heart in salute.
[01:51] <@Carthrat> "It's clear nobody can be trusted here," continues Harken, bitterly. "You are the only one without viable suspicion. I must therefore charge you with getting to the bottom of this matter."
[01:52] <@Carthrat> "Additionally, remember that those possessed by the dominate spell can be.. peered through by their controllers. Therefore, I beg of you to hesitate before speaking of this to anyone you cannot trust."
[01:55] <@Sigmundr> "Aye, Sir.. I shall.. Inform you of my plans once I have them drawn up and enacted.."
[01:56] <@Carthrat> "As you wish," he replies. "I would offer you soldiers, but..."
[01:57] * @Sigmundr nods..
[01:58] <@Sigmundr> "For now, we need to send for the City Watch Captain."
[01:59] <@Carthrat> "I'll see it done," replies Harken, nodding. "Care to you."
[01:59] <@Sigmundr> "Thank you, Sergant.. For now, I will be returning to my room for the night.. I will begin in the morning.."
[02:01] <@Carthrat> So you return to your room... a heavy burden now rests upon you.
[02:03] <@Carthrat> Sleep comes slowly, but the dawn is inexorable, the sun rising barely moments after you close your eyes...
[02:03] <@Carthrat> What do you do?
[02:04] * @Sigmundr rolls out of bed and dresses in his armor, before heading out to the Cathedral, looking for the Sergants on his way.
[02:05] <@Carthrat> The sergeants have every man from the temple lined up in the courtyard, and appear to be relentlessly drilling them. Harken salutes you as you pass.
[02:05] * @Sigmundr returns the salute and motions for him to come aside from the men for a moment.
[02:06] <@Carthrat> Harken does so, marching straight towards you. Professional, very soldierlike. "Morning."
[02:07] <@Sigmundr> "Morning, Sir. I'd like to start my investigation, if possible.. Could you gather the other Sergants in the Cathedral with a small number of guards? Say.. twelve?"
[02:09] <@Carthrat> "At once," replies Harken, nodding, whirling around to bark out commands to the formation. Within moments, guards and the other sergeants are marching towards the temple...
[02:11] * @Sigmundr sighs and head off into the temple, gathering the items he needs for the Augury spell, planning to pay the Temple back for them, then mumbles a spell to himself, asking a question outloud.
[02:11] <@Sigmundr> "Is Protection from Evil the best way to test the people in the Temple?"
[02:12] <@Carthrat> "Weal." Who said that?
[02:13] * @Sigmundr smiles slightly and mutters a prayer of thanks to Tempus, before turning away from the altar and preparing for his casting.
[02:18] * Retrieving #evildunes modes...
[02:18] <@Carthrat> The guards and sergeants stand in files, down the middle of the cathedral.
[02:20] <@Carthrat> OOC: Remember, protection from evil works on... one person.
[02:22] <@Sigmundr> OOC: Indeed, which is why I prepared four castings of it. ;)
[02:22] <@Carthrat> OOC: Exciting!
[02:22] * Ana-away is now known as Ana-breakfast
[02:23] <@Sigmundr> "Alright.. I am not aware of any other way to do this.. I will cast a spell of Protection from Evil on each of you, the Sergants. This will, hopefully, reveal if any one of you are under the confines of the spell.. After the castings are complete, those that can be trusted will assist me in the investigation.. Those that can not, will be detained."
[02:24] <@Sigmundr> "I now ask that you, the Sergants, remove all items, armor, and weapons, into the holding of the Guards."
[02:27] <@Carthrat> The sergeants glance at each other, slowly taking off their armour and disarming themselves... eventually, the three are just there, clad in nothing but shirts and trousers.
[02:37] * @Sigmundr nods and closes his eyes, mumbling a spell under his breath. OOC: Detect Magic.
[02:38] <@Carthrat> There is not much in the way of magic within the cathedral... only the swords of the sergeants have a faint glow.
[02:38] <@Carthrat> And the altar itself, of course.
[02:38] <@Carthrat> There's a sudden pounding at the door.
[02:39] * @Sigmundr nods and casts his spell of Protection from Evil on Harken first.
[02:39] <@Carthrat> Harken doesn't react before, or after you touch him, your spell neatly in effect.
[02:40] * @Sigmundr nods, and moves to the next in line, repeating the spell.
[02:40] <@Carthrat> Nor does this sergeant react, not flinching in the slightest- a true soldier indeed.
[02:40] * @Sigmundr nods and moves to the third and final Sergant, casting his spell.
[02:40] <@Carthrat> The pounding at the door continues a moment, then stops.
[02:41] <@Carthrat> The final sergeant breaths in as you cast your spell on him, with some apprehension... and then exhales when you're done.
[02:41] * @Sigmundr nods and turns to the Guards.
[02:41] <@Sigmundr> "Guards, return their belongings and go back to your duties.
[02:41] <@Sigmundr> "
[02:43] <@Carthrat> The guards do so, placing the equipment on the ground and marching out the door. Another soldier runs in, handing a note to you. It reads that a Maz is waiting outside the front gates for him... or will meet him at the tavern at around 11.
[02:43] * @Sigmundr reads the note, and then turns to the Sergants.
[02:43] <@Sigmundr> "Do we all agree on the loyalties and minds of each other?"
[02:44] * Ana-breakfast is now known as Anastasia
[02:44] <@Carthrat> They press their hands against their chest. "Undoubtably," they speak as one.
[02:46] <@Sigmundr> "Aye. As you three are of higher rank than I, I now turn over control of the investigation to you. I still wish to hear of the results from the assassin's interrogation and the Captain's test, though. I also submit myself to you for testing right now. No doubt can linger on anyone, circumstances favoring them or not."
[02:47] <@Carthrat> "How can there be doubt on you?" grunts Harken. "Your desire to be tested speaks volumes."
[02:47] * Anastasia is now known as Kotono
[02:48] <@Sigmundr> "If that is your word on it, Sergant, I will follow your order. I have a.. friend.. One of the group I traveled with waiting for me outside of the gates. Since I have turned full control of the investigation to you, I will take my leave, unless you have orders for me, Gentlemen."
[02:50] <@Carthrat> "Well, we'd best not keep you," they salute.
[02:50] * @Sigmundr returns the salute and heads out towards the gate, hoping he's doing the right thing by turning over the investigation..
[02:50] <@Carthrat> OOC: Jump intop #dunes and appear.
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake
