Quote from: "Dracos"Yes, a few times a year we see this stupidity.  Usually from companies on the verge of going out of business or companies whose entire business model is "Bouncy babes".  So what?

I object to such a biased and depreciative view of the Dead or Alive girls.  There's nothing wrong with very cute or very hot, very buxom and very bouncy girls ^^

Dracos

Okay, a bit uncouth, but that was what I was getting at.

Having a few games a year that do this shouldn't be a big deal.

Dracos
Well, Goodbye.

Notice the vaste majority of his examples are 1) FPS and 2) the same games repeated over and over.

Sounds more like he has a bone to pick with Halo than with the industry.

Gotta love that he uses Halo in #2. I don't know, but I recall running around trying to secure my people, invade alien spaceships, and knowing from word one that we were under attack. Gasp!

Then he uses Halo2 in #3 when he's complaining about not being a bad guy. 9_9 I guess starting as a bad guy and becoming a good guy is too cliche for him.

And Brian, which was your reply?

Quote from: "thepanda"And Brian, which was your reply?
Quote from: "Brian"Their commenting system ate my criticism for being too long

But it read a little something like this:

I find your article a bit difficult to swallow, as one of the gamers you proport to be on the side of in your crusade to 'save' the industry.  I will agree that on point #1, exploitation has no place in video games ... but then, it also has no place in society.  And yet, it's there.

With regards to your suggestions on "playing the villain", that seems like a relatively weak attempt at innovation; Dungeon Keeper did just that (and it was an RTS).  The same for Evil Overlord.  They're fun, but they're established, part of the genre.  You're not really suggesting anything new when you pitch stones from the safety of your glass house.

I also wonder how cinematics are so terrible; certainly with FFVII (your example) I don't remember ever thinking, "Damn.  My hours of effort have paid off with an awesome story-related CG sequence.  AGAIN." at any point.  Realistically, they're only another element of storytelling ... and your suggestions seem to be a lot more about the story than the genre or anything else.

Just because innovation is needed doesn't mean that it's time to say, "You know what?  Everything that sold games before?  Let's ignore it."  In fact, chances are any developer or producer would laugh at you for saying that.  Innovation comes from refining and improving existing concepts.  This means that we should see graphics improve, we should see storytelling (with cinematics, if called for!) improve, we should see gameplay and interactivity improve.  We should see new things added to what we know and love to allow games to evolve; you can't simply say that the old paradigm doesn't work (hint: the game industry is worth billions of dollars in the US.  This seems somewhat unlike a failed paradigm, all told) and a new one is called for.

If games suck, they'll stop selling.  People vote with their dollars.  You may not want to hear this ... but a lot of people aren't seeing the problem you are.  Possibly because for them (and therefore the industry they support), the problem doesn't exist.

Next time, call for innovation by calling for innovation, not crying wolf about 'saving' the industry.

Well, Goodbye.

Slashdot gives me no teh funny today.  Instead, have some edutainment, and read an interview with the creator of the game Oregon Trail.  Hands up, those of you too young to remember the original Apple II version of the game!

Backstory, please?

Well, after Photoshopping a picture of Yomi with a fish, I found a torrent link to a Sailor Moon doujin drawn by Azuma Kiyohiko (or so they say). And as these particular pages lurked within the doujin, comedy lurked within Minako's facial expressions.

Brian

...thank you, Chairman SabreMau.  The council has no further questions.
