I thought Microsoft's philosophy was "Let's use the general public as beta-testers for our software."
If you see Vampire Hikaru Shidou, it is Fox.  No one else does that.  You need no other evidence." - Dracos

"Huh? Which rant?" - Gary

"Do not taunt Happy Fun Servitor of the Outer Gods with your ineffective Thompson Submachine Gun." - grimjack

Hehehehe....

Microsoft's philosophy goes beyond their initial entrance price.  I think that it's a rather severe jump in cost -- I'll wait on buying it after a price drop or three -- but it's much more than that.  The x-box 360's philosophy is much more online content with a lot more emphasis on the Live infrastructure.  Understand that Live is a network maintained by Microsoft, so it's not like the initial Sony offerings, where each company had their own servers, behind their own firewalls, and each had no guarantee of compatibility with one-another.  That meant that online gaming on Sony's platform could be an iffy proposition; just because you can reliably connect to Everquest doesn't meant you can get to play Madden.  But Microsoft had enough money and influence (they own their own ISP) to ensure that if you could access any online content, you could access all of it.  Barring bandwith limitations at the user end, anyway.  The 360 is the natural progression of that platform, and they're hoping that Live on the 360 will have enough technology and, eh ... inertia? ... behind it that people will overcome the initial hurdle and sign up.

Understand that Microsoft's decision to up the ante does come on the heels of announcements that premium games are actually going to see a 5-15$ upward drift in terms of price (over the previous soft standard of ~50$).  Gamers will proportionately expect more bang for their buck, so to speak.  Microsoft can step in here with Live and say, "Well, our developers are pledged or contracted into providing content packages for games, so by the time you get finished with the offline game, and get good at online, new content will be availible."  Time will tell if the content is good enough to soothe the burn of that extra-high console price-point.  Also remember that Microsoft is launching in November, leaving them ripe for wave two of distribution at E3, likely coinciding with the PS3's (not terribly cheap either) launch.  E3, as we know, is also the prime time to announce a price-drop on a console.  It would be unprecedented, but depending on how Microsoft's sales go (either extremely poorly or well), it's entirely plausible.

Next up, Sony has the Cell processor.

Riiiiight.

I may not really be that keen on Microsoft's price-point for the console personally, but I don't think that they're entirely clueless about what they're doing.  If the console's price gets dropped to something I see as reasonable, or if they launch a franchise from the grave (online remakes of your old favorites) I may get one.  I'm primarily interested in the Revolution, but in all honesty don't plan on getting a new console before 2007 anyway.

Quote from: "Dracos"I'm...optimistic on the revolution.

I want it to win if only because nintendo is the only company I see with the right philosophy.  Microsoft being second and sony being a very painful third.

Dracos

I'm hoping that I get to win.  Joe consumer here.  And function > style.  Not the same for everyone, but oh well.  Enjoyment > loyalty.  I buy RPG's, some strategy, sports and then the very occasional oddball title.  Whoever has the best titles(for me) will get my money.

I hope it's not Microsoft.

All that being said.  While I agree with a lot Nonento has said in explaining where the revolution design came from, it doesn't look appealing at all.  And that's from a function standpoint.  It doesn't look comfortable to game with and it doesn't look very robust.  But if they get working motion sensors and the developers buy in and produce, it could be very cool and easy.

Overall, I like the fact they're taking a chance to improve things instead of just repositioning or, god forbid, add buttons.
