Quote from: "baka-ken"Only 2 really... I (Hachimaki) cheated a tad :p
So did Iddy, to be honest, but still... ^_^
<Cidward> God willing, we'll all meet in Buttquest 2: The Quest for More Butts.

Iron Dragoon

Hey, I didn't cheat. It always takes people a little while to get used to me!

And in that time, I get to roll again!
This is not the greatest post in the world, no... this is just a tribute.

From the editors opening letter whining about the very first console RPG only having a male main character and no real flexibility about that (Nevermind, they didn't even have turning in the first version of it) to the end article recognizing that, shockingly, 10-20 years ago (like today) tech schools are very heavily filled with males and that gaming and animation isn't really seen as much of a career path.  Shock, apathy by the academics towards gaming in the 80s and 90s?  I would've never guessed!

Drac, the editor's notes are really amusing.

"At this point, it becomes abundantly clear that I will be stuck in this little loop of questioning until I compromise my personal identity as a female who likes males and answer, "Yes." So, after reasoning this away by saying to myself, "Sure, she is my Royal Princess and everyone 'loves' their royal rulers. And you know, it could be a sisterly, philos love sort of thing, right?""

Are you sure this isn't a parody?

Ragnar

I see she didn't bother to stick around for Princess Moonbrook in DQ II or the option of playing a female character in DQ III. Quite frankly, I find that article redonkulous.

In other news, I feel I should alert you about this Great Moment in English Comprehension that was sent in to the Dilbert newsletter (slogan: "A little ray of bitter sunshine," or, as I call it, "working hard for a bitter tomorrow). Note - stupid people are referred to as "Induhviduals."

QuoteI work as a computer technician for a large retail chain, servicing customer's computers.  One day I answer the phone, and the Induhvidual asks, "Do you guys sell Ethernet cables?"  I said that we do, and he asks, "How much is it?"  I asked, "How long do you want it?" He responded, "Um, a while I guess.  I want to buy it."  I said, "No, I mean how long as in the length of the cable."  This elicited total silence on his end, so I informed him that we sell a 7-foot cable for $24.99.  He asked, "When do I have to return it?"  I told him to keep it as long as he likes.

Um, not that I don't roll my eyes wholeheartedly at the article, but...

1. In DQ3, the Main character isn't royalty in any sense of the word, aside from the brief time waster in the first town out of the starting island.

2. In the NES DQIII, playing the main as a female was largely purposeless, as there is no change in sprite or NPC interaction.

3.  The Princess of Moonbrooke isn't the main character.

A far better example would be Alys from PS1.  Yes, it somehow manages to be worse than the atrocities that were DW1 and DW2, but it's a far better counterexample than reaching at DW3 and DW2's "female" "mains".

Yeah, but I never said he was. I was merely pointing out that you could play as a girl, which was the main beef of the article.

I know, but my point was that the fact that you can play as a girl still undermines the author's complaint. I'm sure there are plenty of games with other female leads that are more effective than DQ III, but I was just trying to stay within the series. I realize that you don't care much for the Dragon Quest games, but I happen to like them quite a bit.

Anyway, I want to know if the author has read that article about the vibration function on the game controllers... :D

Gah, I misinterpretted the bit where she said "Sure, she is my Royal Princess and everyone 'loves' their royal rulers".  Nevermind that argument, it is retarded on my part.

However...

Pfft.  Having the option to be a female and then the game still regarding the hero as a male doesn't undermine the complaint.  If anything, it enforces it by showcasing the lack of flexibility the games had with Gender.

Why bother staying within the series when all you can come up with as defense until DQ4 is a largely unimportant support PC and DQ3's cocktease of a gender option?  I'll admit I dislike DQ games that don't end in 3, 4, or 5, but really.  Irrational love of a game shouldn't blind you to how shoddy the counterarguments you've produced are,  especially when other games of the genre smack down the whiny woman's complaint far better.

Double post, but this is just... Gah.

Ashley Winchester:  "Oh no!  They're changing the menus!  Adding VA!  This isn't right, DQ must stay true to the director's intention!!!!  Menus are what define DQ!!!!!! Other random but equally stupid dribble!!!"

Jyagan:  "...Uh... these... changes were decided by the Director.  You're full of yourself."

Ashley:  "The director doesn't know what he's talking about!  He doesn't know what Foreigners want!!!!!!!"

God damn it, why can't DQ fanboys just be happy that the next version is getting ported instead of bitching about superficial changes that give the game SNES level polish?

I haven't played a DQ/DW game in a while, but just out of curiousity, did they actually refer to the character with male pronouns or is it one of those gender neutral scripts where they say the hero's name instead of using pronouns?

They use Male Pronouns if memory serves.

Er?  I was calm in that.  Unless regarding Ragnar's comments with contempt somehow implies a lack of placidity.

It does come across as a bit hostile.

Heh, point taken.
