[Anastasia]

"Soon, I hope. Even with the protective enchantments around this house, I don't want them to come back here."

[Carthrat]

"Where's Diane?" questions Carthrat.

[Anastasia]

"She's out meeting someone about White Glow information, I think," she says. "Something up?"

[Carthrat]

"Apart from the usual, no. I just want to get out of here.. there could be any number of things sneaking up on us, even now. At lesat in Alaska we should have a couple days respite."

He keeps it to himself, but Carthrat truly regrets not finishing off that mage way back..

[Anastasia]

Rachel nods. "Yeah. Helping you is sure a big job...You bring more trouble than I could probably find in a lifetime."

[Carthrat]

"It's great fun, isn't it?" Carthrat deadpans.

[Anastasia]

"In a way," she says with a smile, "Minus getting smashed into the wall at high speeds."

[Carthrat]

"Eh, you learn to absorb the pain."

Carthrat nods.

[Anastasia]

"I guess so. At least Diane can heal us." she says.

"But...what is that sort of life really like? You know, the life of a mercenary or adventurer? Is it really exciting or more interesting than a normal life?"

[Carthrat]

Carthrat shrugs. "It really depends what you want out of life.

Oh, I know.. most people who *know* of the adventuring career probably think it's like the movies- and in some cases, it is. BUt you know it works both ways? That there are plenty mercenaries and drifters out there who think a normal life is like one of those stupid soapies, where everything works out in the end and they don't consider that *they* will be the ones hurt from it all?

I think the main reward of being an adventurer is that every time you do something, there's an *instant* response. Something *happens*. And if you take a moment to look at everything, you can see stuff *happening* to other people.

In a normal life.. it's more tame, and they way the rediculous legal system works, and the way the economy is managed.. it's a dog-eat-dog world, still, but it's much more.. tense.

What I'm trying to say is.."

Carthrat slumped. "I don't really know anymore."

[Anastasia]

"You don't, do you?" she says quietly. "I think I see that...Why did you start this sort of life, then?"

[Carthrat]

"Circumstance forced me into it and I found myself enjoying it," replied Carthrat. "It's a long story. Maybe I'll tell you on the plane."

[Anastasia]

Rachel scoots over on the couch to make space and motions for you to sit down.

"Why don't you tell me now? We have all day, really."

[Carthrat]

"I'm hungry," comments Carthrat, changing the subject. "Do we have anything to eat? I'll make it myself."

[Anastasia]

Rachel giggles, breaking the mood nicely. "Yes, we have some food in the kitchen. We'll talk when you're more up to it."
