"Well, he asked me to save his land," Miaka replied after a moment's silence. "I get asked that a lot, and once you agree to the first request, it's hard to say no to the next one, you know?"

Miaka shrugged. "What would you have done in my place?"

Lafiel nodded as she listened.

"That's very noble of you."  She sighed and looked around at the tables filled with people chatting amiably.

"I'm not in your place, so how could I answer that?"

Figment

Walking around behind the house, Devon pulled off the white robe and pulled his bedroll out of his backpack.  Finding an out of the way area, he settled in to get some sleep before his late-night jaunt.

"That's true," Miaka agreed. "You actually live here, and you've seen what's happening... and so has your uncle." She frowned. "I don't really understand why he's more than happy to let others save his land, without actually coming along and helping. That's not what Hotohori would do...."

"It's not the result that's holding him back  -- oh, he really does want Zaphiel dead -- but the action.  Can you actually kill someone, another human?  My uncle doesn't believe he can, and has has created some weird internal construct where if someone else is doing it, it's not his doing...  Killing is wrong, and everyone knows that!" she said softly but vehemently.

Miaka looked off into the distance, as she replied. "The last world I'd been on, I'd met Tamahome. And eventually, I met his family." She paused briefly. "And a few weeks later, I helped bury them. His oldest sibling couldn't have been older than twelve, while the youngest--"

The priestess took a deep breath, before continuing. "There are evil people in the world. The one who did that, only did it out of spite. To hurt Tamahome. And, in turn, he was being used by an even more evil person.

"If I could have stopped that person, before he did any of that...." Miaka shook her head sadly. "People often have high principles which they would like to follow, until they experience the evil in the world personally."

Miaka looked Lafiel in the eyes. "I don't want your people to experience what Tamahome had. You don't have to respect it, but at least, please try to understand?"

Lafiel looked on, eyes saddening as she replied, "But who says you'll be preventing anything?  Who says that Zaphiel will hurt anyone.... will you at least try and speak with him before you butcher him," she said veneom in her voice.

The waitress returned, with a helper form the kitchen.  She loaded the table down with their order, it barely managing to fit on it.  "A wide variety of foodstuff could be seen."

She left, and Lafiel looked at Miaka, "I'm sorry.  You're only doing what you feel is right.  I have no buisness... anyway, enjoy."

She took a sip of her milkshake.

Miaka sipped her own milkshake, following Lafiel's example. "I thought that Zaphiel had already threatened to kill Arkanel, when your uncle did go to try and talk with him. And aren't there currently dozens, if not hundreds, of soldiers at Camelot, all serving Zaphiel?"

The red-head frowned. "Unless what I have just said are simply lies told to us by Arkanel, what could we possibly do? Send weapons inspectors to Camelot?" Her frown got deeper, as she pondered Lafiel's words. "Or is that exactly what you're saying? That there's something we don't know, or that Arkanel hadn't been completely truthful with us?"

Lafiel considered for a moment, "It is not my place to doubt the word of the my uncle."  She turned and looked out into the distance, "I can't remember anything that he's said as being a lie... but his premise that Zaphiel is doing what he's doing for conquest.   You people have weapons, would you conquer others and subjugate them just because you have them.  Is it possible Zaphiel merely wants them, and not us?  Does having a sword mean you plan to kill with it?"

"I'm sorry, you came for sweats, not my problems.  Enjoy"  Lafiel took a bite of one of the sweats.  "Mm... I haven't had one in years, they aren't bad."

Stuffing herself with what tasted like chocolate chip cookies, Miaka waved Lafiel's concerns aside. "I don't mind chatting with you. I actually wanted to talk to you, since it seemed like you were a nice person. Well, that and one should never abandon the Way of Sweets."

Sipping some more of the milkshake, Miaka twirled the glass slightly, staring into the creamy liquid. "It's true that weapons are not always used for offense. However, the only other use of weapons is defensive, and defense in turn requires there be an agressor, first. Since your world is fairly peaceful, both from what your uncle has told us and from what I can see with my own eyes, from what could one possibly try to defend themselves with an entire army?"

Miaka shook her head. "No, I doubt Zaphiel has something in mind that doesn't include agression. Threatening to kill his own Chosen Brother is yet more proof of that."

Moving on to strawberry-flavored ice-cream, Miaka mused, "Of course, if Zaphiel hadn't harmed anyone yet, and there's any other way to stop him aside from killing him, I'm all for it. I like to keep my options open, and I was called to save the world, not act as some executioner."

Lafiel nodded, her eyes brightened as Miaka talked.  "Thank you," she said softly, before daintily muching on some sweats while she sipped her milkshake.

Miaka nodded, smiling at Lafiel. Then, as she munched on a caramel stick, her eyes widened. "This is good!" she exclaimed, and handed Lafiel a similar sweet. "You just have to try it!"

Taking a dublicate stick from the table, Lafiel bites into it.  "Mmm... these are good!" she smiles.

"Lafiel," Miaka asked her companion, nibbling on a saccharine bit of pineapple. "Would you mind telling me what you know of Camelot and Zaphiel? More information about what we'll be facing can never hurt. Besides, anything you could tell me has to help us avoid casualties... on both sides."

Lafiel looked at her friend, eyes growing distant for a moment.  "Zaphiel belived Camelot the center of power for those who won the war.   He didn't...  He didn't believe certain aspects of our lives were handled correctly.  He believed Camelot had the answers, along with the tools to change things... the problem with magic among them.  I knew him well," she sighed, and took a deep breath before continuing, "he was the cheif administrator of the town, while my uncle was the spiritual leader.  I know little of Camelot specifically, only what Zaphiel said before he moved there permantly.  About it being a wonderous place."
